Extraordinary Auctiox Sale. —The larg
est auction sale that has transpired in this city
within the memory of the oldest inhabitant was
made by Ellis A Livingston on Tuesday last at
the of A. C. Saun <ers A Cos. The amount
realized upon the stock was between twenty and
twenty-one thousand dollars. Parties were pre
entfrom Macon, Georgetown, Montgomery and
other places, and the competition was very
spirited. The stock was invoiced in the aggre
gate at about $16,000, and was sold in many in
stances at 30 per cent. above retail prices. Beit
«aUt to the credit of Messrs. Ellis & Livingston
that the extraordinary profit realized, was due
in a great measure to the liberal system of ad
vertising adopted by them. The proceeds of
the sale, as directed by Mr. Saunders, will be
turned over to authorities of the State of
Georgia, during the war.

ANOTHER LETTER^
Jamestown Isi.amd, )
June 10, 1861, 9 o'clock, P. M. j
We have just received at this post intelligence
to this effect: that Col. MoG-nuter’s command,
2,200 strong, stationed at the Bethel, on the
lines between York and Elizabeth City counties,
was attacked to-day by from 3,000 to 4,000
Federal troops, who were repulsed with a loss of
AOO ruen killed and wounded, while we only lost
hveon our side.
Our loss was from the Nottoway Cavalry alonß
whose horses, it seemed, mired in attempting to
pass from the attack of an overwhelming force to
cue rear of McGrhder’a redoubt.
The object of the Federal forces seems to have
been to fall upon the force at Yorktown, and in
their route were compelled to pass McGruder's
lines. The battle lasted several hours, and the
discharges of cannon were heard at this place
very distinctly. Our brave boys were follow
ing up their victory when dispatches were sent
out.
We have pretty much the same report from
two sources—one direct from the scene of action
by a perfectly reliable party—and both tally so
nearly that their truth, with some slight modifica
tions, may be received with perfect confidence,
You may expect to hear of more fighting in a
day or two, as the battle fought to-day was not
more than 12 miles from their stronghold at
Fortress Monroe.
Early' this morning we were made to wonder at
the meaning of the big-mouthed cannon so con
tinually barking in the direction of Hampton,
but were soon acquainted with the fact that the
enemy, who have been so teasting on the dainties
of our soil, had been inspired with courage
enough (by taking with them a superior force) to
make an attack*!! our troops, stationed at Bethel
Church, 10 miles from Hampton. They were
repulsed twice at 10% a’olock, A. if.; but belting
ua their numbers, as they always have done,
they again rallied, when they were driven off
with a loss of three hundred men. Our loss is
-;maU when compared with theirs, being only six;
but I am sorry even to have to record this loss,
and that, too, from the ranks of the brave sons of
Nottoway. %
I believe the above statement to be true, as it
>ama direct from Bethel through the dispatch
bearer from that post. W.
Playful Passages for War Times.—P.
Green wants to know why soldiers don’t sleep in
their knapsacks ? Also, whether having your
pockets rifled will make the contents go any
further? If it will, he wants to try it during
these hard times. Also, if clothing can’t befitted
to the soldiers so that they won't be tight in it ?
Being asked why Winans wasn’t hung immediate
ly on his arrest, P. Green replied that he sup
posed the weather hadn’t got warm enough yet
fox such a summery proceeding.
PROSPECTUS
OF
THIS PALMETTO FLAG.’
' pHE Subscribers will publish on the 30th March,
1 & new and brilliant paper, with the above tide,
which has been adopted after mature leflection; and
it will be laid before the public with no intention to
adopt sectional views or extreme patti/an opinion;
but simply to afford our Southern friends and North
trn sympathizers a liberal vehicle for the expression
us their views and opinions. We will dissect with
au unsparing hand, the honible state of negro
society at the North, and the consequent degen
eration of a portion of the white, thus riviting
upon the heads of Northern slanderers, the wide
spread libel, that a state of degraded immorality
aione exisiß at the South, on account of the pres
ence of an inferior race.
VV'e will exhibit the hollow hypocrisy of tbc would
be abetters of abolition in the Northern and Eastern
sections of the country, and prove by statistics that
the opinion formed ot the immorality of a mixed
society of colors in our Southern regions is suggest
ed in the minds of the moralist by the striking truths
(nought to their notice here.
We will discuss the general topics of the day with
fteedomand without fear, giving a liberal attention
to the literary and artistic affairs of this and other
*.uuutries. In fine, we intend to make our Palmetto
a s'andard newspaper, as its prototype is the stand
ard of a free and gallant people.
We shallot in 150,000 copies of our fust number.

The Groyer & Baker Company is one oftho oldest,

of the business. It entered the field at an early day,
when Sewing Machines were almost in their firststa

sed in the development ot the trade and the perfect
ing of its Machines; taking advantage of ail posi
nle improvements in the make, adaptation and modi
fication ofthe machinery, it has enjoyed the exclu
sive benefits ofthe inventive genius of one person of
the firm (Mr. William O. Grover) by which It has been
placed in possession of privileges and patents that

The mechanism ofthe Grover# JUker Machine is
exceedingly simple, durable and easily understood by
any person old or young; there is nothing in its man

it is merely a question of time and memory with some
