HUS DAILY TIMES.
City Official Journal.
The Soldier’s Benefit,
We are requested to announce that Madame
Bailina, with the assistance of some of her former
pupils and the best umatour talent ia this city,
will give a concert at Temperance Hall the early
part of noxt week for the benefit of the Soldiers
who have enlisted in Columbus, and are now in
the service of their country. It would be quite
superfluous for us to urge upon our citizens the
duty of contributing by thdir presence on that
occasion to so worthy an object.
Crops in Louisiana. —The Baton Hogue Ad
vertiser says that from all directions it continues
to receive the most cheering accounts of the
promising condition of the crops. Our exchang'
es throughout that State tell us that the recent
rains have placed them beyond danger from
drouth in most localities. The prospect, it is
said, was never finer for a largo yield than at
present.
JB&Br-Qe n. Dix’s commission as Major General
bears date of May the 7th, and tho New York
Journal of Commerce says he ranks above all the
other Lincoln Generals, and in case Genera
Scott’s death, would be Commander-in-Chief.
Illness or a Prominent Citizen. —Dr. John
H. Ellis, says tho Macon Telegraph of the 11th,
a prominent and esteemed citizen of Macon, was
found on yesterday morning, prostrated and in
sensible on the floor of his sleeping room, near
the side of hi* hed. It is supposed to bo un ap
poplectio attack. Last night he was speechless,
and in a moribund condition, and bis case oon~
sidered almost hopeless.
Oca An, swan.—Gen. Scott is leported to have
said “that tho South must answer for this rebel
lion at the oannon*3 mouth.” Well, General,
the cannon’s mouth has answored you from
rtewall’a Point, Pig Point, Aquia Creek, Bethel,
Vienna, New Creek, and at every other point
wheroyou have interrogated it. llow effective
these answers have been, wo can judge by the
rout and slaughter of your brother mercenaries,
and the shattered hulls of your master’s corsair
crafts.
Number of Regiments in Washington and
Vicinity. —A full list of the number of regiments
and meu reported as having arrived in Wash
mgton since tho war broke out, ia published to
day. The footing shows the aggregate of fifty
eight regiments, numbering about' 62,000 sol
diers. Besides these, are the Cavalry, Artillery,
the subsequent recruits for the regiments, from
time to time, the Regulars, and the District
Militia, and volunteers in Washington and
Georgetown, making about fifty-eight to sixty
thousand, all told, upon this line of operations.—
Cor. of N. Y. Times.
No Compromise.—We oopy the following from
a recent number of the N. Y. Post ;
Mr. Crittenden and his small knot, of adherents
may suggest what compromises they please, but
until the supremacy of tho Federal Government
Is recognized from the Potomac to the Rio Grande,
until the Stars and Stripes float again over every
fortress within our boundaries, until the armies
of rebellion have laid down their la3t musket, and
the leaders of rebellion have paid the last penalty
for fomenting tho moat wanton and malignant
crime that our country ever witnessed, the de
mand and wishes of the people of the North will
not be satisfied.
A Yankee Secessionist. —One A. Falmer,
ofNorth Goshen,Conn, raised a secession flag last
week on his house. On Monday last some two
hundred of strong Union men of Goshen, Litch
field and Cornwall went to the house took down
and carried off the flag and arrested five or six
Secessionists who were brought down to the
village of Goshen, when they took the oath of
allegiance, and were allowed to go free. There
were some seven or eight Secessionists present
armed who undertook to defend the flag of the
enemy. Mr. Palmer swore to sustain the flag of
the United States. One was put up on his house
which he swore to protect through all hazards.—
