The DoCHLE-EAnp.EL Shot Gun with tite
Sword Bayohet. —Messrs. Haiu-an & Bro., of
this city have shown us a cioublo-barrel gun wi h
tho sword bnyonei attached —tho laMor an inven
tion and application cf their own. The method
of attachment is simple, strong and cheap, and,
thus provided, we consider the ordinary shot gun
tho m <at effective weapon that can be carried to
the field.
Death of Col. S. Siatter.
Gol. S. Siatter formerly of C.inton Georgia,but
for many years a resident ol New Orleans, died
a few daya since, at Meridian, a depot on the Mo
b.le and Mississippi Hail Road, about one hun
dred and forty miles .above Mobile. He was a
brother ia law to Captain Jonathan Parish who
died at tho Indian Springs on Wednesday last.—

Misnomers.
The name of the Federal officer who tvaa glo
riously defeated and captured, with his entire
command, by .ho Missourian3 under Gen. Par
sons, sorely puszles some of our catcmporaries.
In ono wj see it called ‘‘Leigle,” in another “Zei*
gle” and still another, ‘'Ziegler.” Unless our
eyes greatly deoieve us it should be printed “Sei-
Sle.”
>3®*’ It would bo well for druggists and oth
ers, making purchases of quinine, to test the
genuineness of the articles as its scarcity had led
to adulteration, and wo are informed that a
package o: five hundred ounces, half flour,
was recently seised at Louisville, bound South.
Governor’s Proclamation. —Gov. Pickens
has issued his proclamation calling together the
Legislature of South Carolina, in extra session,
in Columbia, on the first Monday ia November
next, to appoint Elector for President and Vicc-
Prasidont of the Confederate Stato s, who are to
be voted for on the first in Novem
ber, and inaugurated in tho 22d of February
next.
Important Suggestions— U. 8. -4. Jiegula
iio»«.—“Brick” Pomeroy of the Lacross (Wis.)
Democrat, says that he intends to submit to the
Federal War Department a few modifications
and suggestions, which if adopted, hb he has no
no doubt they will be, will add much to the effi
ciency of the aripy, to the comfort of the sol
diefa, and will lesson the expenses:
1. No soldier shall be ordered on any duty
where bis life might be placed in danger. This
will do away wiih reoruiting offices.
3. Officers shall always be first to treat as they
are <o retreat. -
3. Privates should always have their sweet
he rts along, that they may learn to fly to arm.-*
quickly; or their wives that they may feel under
restraint.
4 In behalf of the short soldiers, we object
to the shortest men being always placed in the
front ranks during an engagement, as it gives
them the “hottest place” under fire, and they
are necessarily in the rear on a retreat, subjeotjo
receiving unsoldierly wounds from the points of
ihe enemy's bayonets! Quito a point !
fi. Ail sentries should bo allowed a young la
dy to stand guard with —the time would stem
so uiuoh shorter.
6. A dentist should examine the teeth of each
soldier, and label on the back of the head what
the grinders oan do—tender—middling—tough
—or extra tough! The waiter will then know
what sort of meat to give each man that nous
may be wasted. —-
7. Soldiers who cannot stand a charge should
never receive a discharge.
8. Offioers receiving tho higher pay, should
go afoot and let the privates ridel
0. Soldiers should always keep their arms,
and if possible, their legs, with them.
10 None but paterfamilas should belong to
the infantry.
11 The stppers and miners should be made up
of men and a 1 tisro not yet of age.
12 None but scholars s ouid be sent out as
skirmishers, as they are the best to fly to covers.
18 To make a good stand, get a company of
cabinet m* erg.
14. Alw ya rem 'tuber that troops will stand
a hotter fire iu January than July.
