Another Cargo of Arms.
It gives us great pleasure to announce that
another steamer has arrived in a Southern port
from England, laden with arms and munitions
of war for the Confederate Government. This
intelligence was received here yesterday. The
vessel itself, we understand, as well as the cargo,
has been purchased by the Government.
Her cargo oonsist of from 8 to 10 rifled cannon
(which were originally intended—tell it not in
Gath—for the Federal Government) 28,000
stand of arms—a large quantity of powder for
cannon —large quantities of blankets, over coats,
navy and army shoes, saddler’s tools for artille
ry purposes sufficient to equip four battalions.—
She also brings a large quantity of medicine and
assorted goods.
The vessel cost about $200,000. Her engines
are very powerful. Her carrying capacity is
about 1600 tons and she was one of the swiftest
steamers in British waters. There is nothing in
American waters that can cope with her when
she shows her heels. She carries a heavy at"
marnent as the Yankees will some day learn.—
Richmond Enquirer.
The Black Flag,
We have information says ikiv Richmond'Dis
patch, that the authorities of South Carolina
have communicated with the Government upon
the subject ot “hoisting the black flag,” to which
allusion has been made since the attack upon the
coast of that State. It is believed that General
Lee has received orders from the War Depart
ment, urging that those captured must be re
garded as prisoners of war, which will be disre
garded by the authorities of South Carolina;
and that the same course will be pursued which
Governor Wise adopted at the the time of the
John Brown raid upon Harper’s Ferry— when
toe are done with the invaders, the Confederate
Government may have them.
Death of a Gallant Young Officer.
We are pained to learn, says the Nashville
Union and American, that Lieut. James Walker
who was wounded in the knee at the battle of
Columbus, and whose recovery was regarded as
probable, reached the residence of his father, S.
P. Walker, Esq. of Memphis, only in time to
breathe his last. He died on the morning of the
11th. He was a gallant young officer and dis
played distinguished bravery and daring on
that bloouy held. His captain was shot down
and he took command of the company, exciting
the highest admiration by his gallantry. After
he was shot down he addressed a few words to
his next in command, invoking him to press on
with his company, and never suffer them to fall
into the hands of the enemy as prisoners. The
death of so gallant a young officer is deeply to
be deplored. He was not more than twenty one
years of age, having graduated in the military
College in this city in the summer of 1860. He
was a grand nephew of the late President J. K.
Polk. . . i
