Meeting for the Relief of Charleston.
A meeting of the citizens of Columbus was held
last evening, for the purpose of tendering sym
pathy and substantial aid to Charleston, sugges
ted by the late calamitous fire in that city.
Pr J. F- Bozeman, Mayor, was called to the
Chair, and J. W. King appointed Secretary.
On motion a Committee, consisting of Messrs.
J. J. Me Ken dree, R. B. Murdock, E. W. Moise,
L. G.JJBowers and F. .Ingram, were appointed
to report suitable resolutions.
The rneeing was addressed by Messrs. Moise,
Thomas and Ingruin, after which the resolu
tions, as follows, were unanimously adopted :
Whereas, ’ihe.City of Charleston has been
recently visited by a wide spread and destruc
tive conflagration, reducing to poverty and dis
tress, many who, before this awful dispensatioi t
were living in affluence and comfort, leaving a
considerable number of her poor, not only home
less and penniless, but in a state of actual want
of the common necessaries of life, and feeling
the force and propriety of the moral obligation
resting upon us, growing out of the strong ties
of a common humanity, as well as christain sym
pathy in common with all the good and gener
ous other of places and cities, who have already
promptly responded to the strong appeals for re
lief and sympathy, we, the people of this city,
and of its vicinity here assembled do enter into
the following resolutions in regard thereto:
Rtsolved, lat That we do cordially sympathize
with the people of Charleston in the distress oc
casioned by the recent conflagration which baa
swept over a large portion of this beautiful and
prosperous city.
2d, That we cordially approve of the generous
and munificent donation made at its last session
of the Legislature of the State of Georgia, for the
relief of the sufferers of Charleston.
3d, That we warmly commend to the atten
tion and consideration of the Mayor and Coun
cil of Columbus, this case of public distress, and
sincerely desire that they make suitable contribu
tions forthwith in aid of the general relief of
the people of Charleston, in such way and to
such extent as to them may seem meet and
proper.
4th. That the Chairman appoint a Committee
of fifteen (two from each cPy Ward and three
from the vicinity of the oily,) to solicit private
contributions from the citizens of the city and
vicinity, in aid of the distressed citizens of Char
leston.
sth. That the Chairman of this meeting ap
point a Committee of fifteen Ladies, whose duty
jt shall be to collect from the ladies of Columbus
and vicinity such contributions of female and
children’s wearing apparel, food or other aid, as
they may think most needed.

The following notices which have been pub
lished by the Charleston Relief Committee in the
papers of that city, will inform the Committees
or ladies and gentlemon appointed by the Char
leston Aid Meeting in this city on Wednesday
night to what addresses the various contributions
they receive may be remitted :
Donations of money may be sent to the Bank
of Charleston, addressed to J. K. Sass, Esq.,
Treasurer, or to John Cheesborough, E>q., As
sistant Treasurer.
Os Provisions, may be seutjto Mr. Copes’ Cot
ton Press, in Chalmers-street, between Church
and State-streets, where they will be received
and acknowledged by Z. B. Oakes, Esq.
Os Clothing of all kinds, may be sent to the
Theological Library, in Chalmers-street, oppo
site the Confederate Court House, where several
ladies have kindly volunteered to superinted
this department, and will receive and acknowl
edge all contributions.
Postagk Stamps. —We are pleased to inform
the letter-writing public that this article ot prime
necessity has al last reached our city, and may
be obtained in any reasonable quantity on ap
plication at the Post Office.
Steamer Chewala.
This fast running boat, under command of
Capt. James W. Young, will leave for Apalach
icola and intermediate landings this af ernoon
at three o'clock.
Personal. —Arrived by yesterday mornings
train, Mr. A. B. Hobbs, a discharged sick sol
dier, from the Muscogee Rifles, and Mr. T. J-
Dean, of the same corps, under a permanent
furlough, having been wounded at the battle o f
Green Brier. They report the health ot the
company as very good, and that on the morn
ingofthe late Valley Mountain battle, this reg
iment, 12th Ga.) received orders to remove to
Staunton. This is a renewal ot a former
der.

The roar of the British Lion has aroused King
Cotton from the couch on which he has been la
zily reposing for many weeks. Our market pre
sented quite an active appearance yesterday,and
dosed at an advance of fully % of a cent on
previous rates. The greatest advance was felt
by the lowest grades. Roll on the ball 1

This magnificently equipped Company is now
reaiy .or the field, and will leave our city on
Tuesday morning next, for -he coa-t. No com
pany has left our city in higher f*vur with our
citizens, in better condition, or from whom we
may justly expect greater things should they
come in contact with the enemy.

ranks of this company; if the honor of serving
the count y under iu h officer as command it s
not inducement enough, we will state for the in
formation of the laggards that hereafter recruits
are to receive a bounty of fifty dollars.
he yesterday afternoon’s tiain from the
West brought into our city I7g men, under
command of Capt. B. F. Toomer. They are
the last of the Mississippi Regiment which has
been passing through to Savannah the past
week. This is a very fine regiment, and if
they have half a chance, they will hurry up the
cotton picking business on Hilton Head Island.
They leave this evening.
