How to Cure or Prevent Desertion.
Eds. Mobile Adv. & Register:
The necessity for the return of all absen
tees to the army will be sufficient excuse
for troubling you with my suggestions :
1, Let define desertion to in
clude absence without leave for days.
2. Let Congress pass a iaw compelling
all commanders of regiments, battalions, and
separate companies, to publish for two
weeks (niter each muster), in lirreo news*
papers of ihe Grate from which the nu n
came, the names of alt officers and men ab
sent without leave days.
3. Let Congress piaco deserters on the
same footing as men who, having furnish
ed suoslilutes, attempt to leave the country
—tnat is, declare them alien enemies. They
are ready worse.
4, Lot every marriage with a deserter be
illegal. This will stop die breed. Shooting
dots not cure desertion except in the man
who is shot.
The army cannot attend to the enemy
in iront (the Lincolns,) and the enemy in
rear (the deserters), at the rame lime. The
people at home must do their part Let the
women and old men at home, make home
so much more disagreeable than camp for
de&erlcrs that they will prefer camp.
