Hk Seh)i-aikekh| W. 11. HUNT, Editor. MARIETTA. ..6EOKUI.I. tgk. Apology.—We goto press, with this issue, without our usual quantity of reading matter. Monday's mails brought us no news ; besides which some of our hands arc sick, a* d Otliers have been seized with a patriotic desire to serve Georgia in the tented field, and have enlisted for a three years’ campaign. We hope soon to have our office arrangements all right again, when the “ Advocate’s ’ visits shall be regulatly paid, with full instalments of latest news. Religious Services. Right Rev. Stephen Elliott, of the Diocese of Georgia, will hold religious services at the | Episc pal Church in this place, on Saturday, I the 23d inst. The Bishop visits Marietta for , the purpose of administerii g the rite of c<>n fit motion, which will take place on Sunday, ' the 24th. Mr. €. G. Baylor. Mr. C. G Rayl r, the distinguished advocate ! of direct trade between the South and En-I rope, is this week in Marietta. His object is connected with the purposes and interests of' the Cotton Spinners’ Association. * e | Choice Fruit Trees. Mr. N. B. Hard en has supplied us with a va riety of choice fruit trees from his Nurseiy, 3 miles from Marietta. Ste lis advertisement in I this paper. Mr. Harden is perfectly teliable, understands his business, and should be en couraged. Orders tin ough the Maricttta Post ■ Office will be promptly attended to. Hon. Jefferson Davis. Hon. Jefferson Davis, on his wav to Mont- ; gomcry, whither ho has been called bv the Soul hem Congress to take the Presidency of the Provisional Government of the Confederate States, passed through Marietta on Friday ; bight last, by the 2 o'clock train from Cliatta-' nooga. Notwitl standii g the inconvenience of the hour, a numb> r of our citizens assent* bled with banners, transparencies, and music, at the Depot, to salute the President elect, and to manifest their feelings of respect and their approval of the action of Congress. Mi Davis spoke briefly in response to this demonstration. His address was noble and el apient. Hon. Mr. ; Barksdale, of Mississippi, who accompanies him, also made a short address. ThePn si-' dent elect is everywhere received wish enthu- ! sirsm and rey-icing. A Rovser.—An immense mortar, says the Petersburg (la.) Express, of the 12th instant, weighing 15,000 pounds, arrived here vestcr- I day from the Tredegar W. iks, at Richmond, ' intended for South Carolina. The calibre is adapted to 10 inch mortar shells, sixty <»1 i which accomparb'd it, several humin-1 having already preceded it. It rem lined at the R:ch t.mno depot during the day, aid wi'l th s m >r m»g pas- through the city on a he ivy granite wagon, to the Southern depot. —— f-a.vi /At Charleston Mercury. Washington Despatches. Washington, Feb. 15.—1 n the Peace Con icreucc to-day, the Committee—or a majoiity oi then;—succeeded at length in making a re- ' pert. Messrs. Seddon, of \ irgini.r, Ruffin, of Sorth Carolina, and Doniphan, of Mi-s >uri, sta led, at considerable length, the grounds of their oppos tiou to the rep ut. It is understood that Virginia. North Carolina, and Missouri will Vote against the pro; osition siixg"st d bv the Committee, which is a kind oi mongrel com> promise, combining some of the features of the Crittenden with the Guthrie proposal. It is rumored iliat the proposition of the i Committee will be adopted by the Conference, notwithstanding that some of the border South ern States will kick at it. Messrs. Tyler, Seddon and Brockenbotongh will all urge the A irginia Convention to sptrn the proposal of tin: terified Abolitionists. Rives and Summers will recommend its adoption. The action of the Virginia Convention is considered here to be very doubtful. In Con- ‘ gress, however, it is very clear that the Con ference Committee will Le immediately rejec ted. Falling off in tiie Receipts from Ct s- | Toms. —The receipts from customs at New York last week were 8555,000, or only a ; shade above half what they were in the cones- ; ponding week of l ist year. Facts of this sort , occurring every week, speak volumes upon the disastrous consequences to the North of the falling off of the Southern trade. They also ex pose the utter f lly of ad pting a p'otective tai iff bill, which, in excluding certain classes of imported articl-.s, will destroy revenue. - ' i »• Nontgomrey, Ala., Feb. 16.—A number of | model flags were presented and referred, A communication about missies of war was referred. A bill was reported from the committee in relation to citizenship and prescribing uniform rules for naturalization. The caption of the report was only read. Applications were made for patents and copyrights and referred. The Congress then went into secret ses sion. —♦ • I I •* Death or Hon. William S. Johnson.—Mr Johnson died at Casseta Ga., on the 12th inst. and was interred with Masonic honors on the 14th. He resigned his seat in the Senate last year in consequence of ill health He was succeeded by the Hon. J. S. Duncan who died before tiie close of the last session of the Legislature.
