The Cau-e of the Disaster.
The Richmond Correspondent of the
Charleston “Mercury” makes a seveie
point on President Davis, for “select
ing a known drunkard for Major-Gen
eral. IL-w happened this disaster? —
Zollicoffer was pro eminetly calm, cool
and intrepid. He did not bring this
cruel tiling to pass, but gave his life
to prevent it Who did? I answer—
and I want the answer to go to the
whole Confederacy — George Crittenden

ed four times out of the United States
army for drunkenness—Who lay’ drunk
a week, at the Spottswood Hotel, after
he had received his commission—who
lay drunk another week in Knoxville,
on his way to assume command —/ie
ordered the rash attack, which has cost
us we know not yet how dearly.”
The Louisville “Courier” is the only
journal that we have seen which inter
poses an objection to these charges
against Gen. Crittenden. It says:
“The mariner in which some of the
Tennessee papers speak of Gen. Crit
tenden, and refer to the false charges
made against him is scandalous and
infamous, and entirely unworthy ot
brave and just—not to siy g-ern-ron
men. We advise ’hern to be a little
cautious. It is possible they may soon
discover they will have their hands
full in defending the conduct of some

Northern News
Richmond, Jan. 24.—News from Norfolk
came again last night. The New York Her
ald of the 22d inst., says, that a War Tax
will be levied on all the States. Lincoln has
asked Massachusetts and other States, what
number of troops can be furnished within a
week.
Frederick, Jan. 20,—Jackson was at Rom
ney with 17,000 men. Lander retired on
Cumberland.
At Fortress Monroe, 4,000 troops were ex-
I pected from Perryville.
A bill was introduced into the House of
I Congress to reduce to territorial condition
' nine Southern States, excepting Texas,Virgin-
J ii, Kentucky and Missouri.
The rebels in Texas threaten to attack fort
, t’raige; 15, 0 Texans with some pieces ol ar
tillery are marching on tl.e Fort, and are
, within 20 miles of it. Scouts Irvin the 1-ort
have been in several battles.
Great excitement prevails at Santa Fe.
Martial law was declared.
Zollicoftor’s defeat induces Bennett to pre
dict a settlement of the rebellion by the first
i of May.
Congress has passed an act authorizing
the creation of two Secretaries ot M ar.
McClellan now favors active operations,
and a speedy suspensi >n of the rebellion.
Another Naval Expedition is contem
plated.
It is stated at Fortress Monroe that the
Steamer Louisiana, of the Burnside Expedi
tion was lost with 7-0 troops.
The Secretary of the Treasury has been
authorized to issue small notes bearing in
ter.st.

from Knoxville, Tenn, confirms the repott
that Crittenden had rallied at Monticello, Ky

exaggerated.

Nashville, Jan 24.—The most reliable in
formation is to the effect that but two regi
innuts—Battle’s Tennessee, and Statham’s

Crittenden, with nearly allhis force is now

riffles South-West of Somerset, and It miles
of Mill Spring on the Cumberland River,

The Confederates spiked their cannon and
threw them into the River. The enemy got
out one cannon; also, about 2,000 horses and
mulesand 300 wagons. All our stores were
burnt.
Stragglers returning, speak very freely of
the cause of this disaster, and intense excite
ment and indignation prevail here.
Reports from Bowling Green confirm the
washing away of the Pontoon bridge, and
the newly constructed portion es the Green
River bridge, by the late freshet.
Buel is reported to have evacuated Mun
fordville, and gone.no one know where.

stopped supplies to Washington by destroy
