The Battle of Fort Donc'son.
forces i-;xua<;::i> .ixn
We have managed to obtain an au
thentic list t>f the troops cng-agml in
the battle of Fort Dorn-Ison on the !•> h
instant, all o| whom, with the excep
tion of escaped stragglers, surrendered
with Gen. Buckner on the day ! blow
ing.
Gei> Pillow's division included Gen.
Floyd's brigade, an 1 was composed as
follows, (we give them as they were
located in the entrenchments from left
to right):
coi.oxi.i un.vwix e.rau c.mxu.
20th Mississippi regiment, Maj. Brown
26th Mississippi regiment, Colonel Rey-
nolds.
26th Tennessee regiment, C<»l >nel Lil -
lard.

56th Virginia regiment, Captain Davis
50th Virginia regim -nt, Colonel Whor-

slst Virginia regiment, C done! Massie
C01.0X1.1. SI.MOXToX COM VA . U'.XS.
Ist Mississippi regiment, Colonel Sim

7th Texas regiment, Lieut.-Col. Wells.

30th Tennessee regiment, Colonel Head
48th Tennessee regiment, Colonel Vour-
hies.
33d Tennessee regiment, Colonel Win
ston.
42d Tennessee regiment, Col. Quarles.
10th Tennessee regiment, Colonel Hei-
man.
Gen. Buckner's command constituted
our wing, and was composed of'jth j fol
lowing regiments:
Second Tennessee regiment.
Fourteenth Mississip i regiment.
Third Tennessee regiment.
Eighteenth Tennessee regiment.
Thirty-sec .-nd Tennessee regiment.
Capt. Frank Manney’s Tennessee
batttery was also engaged in the tight,
but we arc are not advised as to his
positon.
Brig’. Gen. B. R. Johnson, of Ken
tucky assisted Gen. Pillow in the -com
mand of his division on the day of the
battle.
Dur total loss will thus be seen to be
twenty -t/i;< leg >«!><?»,AFtHMmry lIIHl"
two batteries ol light artillery <.f which
were nine from i’ennessec, six from
Mississippi, three fi<mi Virginia, two
from Kentucky, one from Texas, one
from Alabama and one from Arkansas.
All account? concur in establish the
'act that no battle that ever transpir
ed on the American continent was more
terrific, more fruitful f deeds of daring
and valor, or m ie hardly contested
than that at For-t Djnelson on Sarutday
15th of February, 1862.
An Eloquent Writer
For the Columbia “Guardian,” on the
crisis of our country and the eha.ices
of vdtim to success, says :
“But slia-1 we i? That depend :,

is the compani intelligence, virtue
and public spirit. A people bent on
base material aims, prone to the earth
and novi r looking to the skies,
sordid, selfish and calculating, can nev
er be free. True freedom dwells in
great souls. We must purge the Aehans
from cur camp. The infernal demon of
speculation, which, like vultures and
wolves, following the wake of our army
to fatten on the spoils of the brave and
generous ami unsuspecting, must be
driven howclling to his den. Extortion
and avarice must I e indignantly rebuk

which pander to our lusts. Let all those
sinks of inquiy which have corrupted
and penalized our gallant defenders, lie
at once crushed by the stiong arm of
the law ; let pr< fanencss and obsei-ity
be awed and su! du d by an .1 vatd

our idols, an 1 bury them forever out of

is no danger that we- . b ill fail A peo
ple fit for freedom, :i resolved to be
free—strung in virtue, . ‘rong in intelli

soul within them superior to all brute
force. That soul must ..ssert its native
majesty, and breathe its native air.”
