T H E SITU AT IO N. For three days the Chatta nooga have echoed with rumors of a somcwhat_stariling character from the front. The pertinacity with which these are repeated induces us to believe that lioscnerunzpß actually changing iiis base. It. is now confidently affirm* ed by parties from Tullahoma, that the enemyJiave evacuated Murfreesboro, which has been occupied by our caval ry. We are inclined to doubt'the lat ter as premature, td say the least of it. Os the movement of the Federate in the direction of Columbia however, there seems to be no doubt. It is pos sibly the intention of&osencranz to oc cupy lower central Tennessee, and eith*. er to force oui troops upon the line of the river, oi\to unite with Grant. An advance of our own forces is at prea*- ent a matter.©/ street corner gossip.— If we wcretedvised of tho intended oper ations of the Generate in this respect, we should 4 notVpublish]jthem, or even speculate thereon. Col. Cluke’s"regiment we arcjpform cd by parties just though from Ken tucky, has beenMoing a/deal of J mis* chief to the enemy in the region of Lex ington, and {along the throughout tho blue region. The reported movement of Morgan and Pegram aro*untrue.—Chattanooga Rebel. The movements of .Iloscncrai s are watched with great interest; and, as is usual when the’public mind is directed ’ n direction, speculation concerning the probable often takes the place of positive assertion, and manufactures facts where none exist; in this light are to be esteemed most of the rumors, which come from the front every afternoon. Meanwhile there is much guess-wsrk going"on'about General Johnston and bis movement's. Great inquiries are made about his whereabouts. One man has just seen him at Shelbyville, another knows him to be in Vicksburg, whilst a third in vest him with an übiquity, which ins best ftiends do not claim for him, and is quite sure that General Johnston is both at Jackson, Mississippi and Tulia, honaa, Tennessee, at one and the same time! The truth is that men mostly make the mysteries which excite them; but the locality of the Commander-iu> Chief of the South-Western Department is one of those topics of curiosity with which but few individuate outside of the Adjutant-General's office, have any business. Whilst gossip is s® current in relation to both the Yankee General and our own Chief, they arc doubtless themselves engaged in deeply consids cred schemes, and are watching one another from a distance with a keener and more sagacious observation, than any which is directed to themselves. the sequel es the future will disclose the result of thia, game es bo-peep b e -
