BIG ECLIPSE
THIS YEAR.
The Sun Will be Dark and
Macon Will See a
Part of It.
CLOSE TO ITS PATH.
A Pamphlet on the Subject Has
Been Printed and the Course of
the Sun Has Been Laid Out.
Mr. Bridges Smith has just received
from Washington a pamphlet on “The
probable state of the sky along the path
of total eclipse of the sun, May 28, 1900.”
The pamphlet is the result of observa
tions made during the past year by Mr.
Marbury and other weatner bureau offi
cials at stations along the line which the
eclipse is calculated to follow.
The line of the total eclipse will be
through southern Louisiana, southern
Alabama, central and northeastern Geor
gia, northern South Carolina, western and
northern North Carolina, passing out the
coast of Virginia near Norfolk. The path
of the total eclipse will be forty miles
Ibroad and its eastern margin will bb about
forty miles distant and to the west of
Macon. N. V'-rtheless, Macon will experi
ence a partial eclipse of the sun.
Last April charts were received showing
the portion of Georgia that would be best
adapted for the observation of the total
eclipse of the May 28, 1900, with the re
quest that daily observations of 'the state
of the sky at certain hours be obtained.
A circular letter was sent out to points
in Georgia best adapted for taking 'these
observa tlons.
Similar letters were sent to the weather
bureau officials in Virginia, North and
South Carolina, Alabama and Louisiana.
The pamphlet is the result of these ob
servations and shows e<the prevalent con
ditions of the sky during the interval,
May 15, 1897. An examination of the sev
eral days of the interval shows that days
of cloudiness occurred from May 29 to
June 9, the remaining days being gener
ally clear. An inspection of the daily
weather maps for the same period shows
that from May 15 to May 29 areas of high
pressure persistently covered South At
lantic states, giving fine, clear weather;
from May 30 to June 15, the high areas
were located in the northwestern districts
of the United States, that is, in the Mis
souri valley, causing low’ pressures and
lowering skies in the southern states.
Rain areas tended to prevail in the Mis
sissippi valley, and also on the North At
lantic coast, in which districts conditions
would have been much less favorable for
seeing the eclipse than in Georgia and
Alabama. It is intended to repeat these
observations during the years 1898 and
1899. after which we will be as well in
formed as possible regarding the selection
of the eclipse stations for the year 1900.
HANNA BEATEN.
Graft Thinks Garrard Is In Line For Short
Term.
Columbus, 0., Jan. B—Fix-Representative
James A. Graft, of Cincinnati, who is here
managing Colonel .Teptha Garrard’s cam
paign for the senatorship, says Hanna is
beaten and that Garrard is the logical
candidate for the short term. He feels
confident of success, he says. M. A. Neff
Is also still here putting in some hard
work for the silver Republican candidate.
Lewis G. Bernard lingers to help keep
the Democrats in line, and E. O. Shelby
and Captain Sam Bailey, Jr., have not let
up tn support of .the work of Senator
Voight and Representative Kemper to get
Republicans and Democrats in line for
Hanna.
UNION SERVICES
Were Brought to a Close at First Presby
terian Last Night.
The last service or the union prayer
meeting was held at the First Prebyterian
church last night.
The last sermon was preached by Rev.
W. W. Pinson, of the Mulberry Street
Methodist church, and was a magnificent
piece of pulpit oratory.
The union services have been a com
plete success and it is probable that they
will be repeated in the near future.
THE ACADEMY.
Woodward-Warren Co. Closes Tonight—
Carmen is Coming.
The Woodward-Warren Company closes
a most satisfactory engagement at the
Academy of Music with matinee and night
performances today.
“Cheek’’ is on the bill for the matinee
performance and at night “Too. Much
Smith" is on the boards. The bill for to
night is especially attractive and is sure
to draw a good house at the prices named.
The Woodward-Warren Company is be
yond a doubt" the best popular priced com
pany that has visited Macon. They afford
a most enjoyable entertainment and de
serve the patronage of the public gener
ally.
ROSABEL MORRISON.
Miss Rosabel Morrison will be seen to
night in “Carmen." The name of Miss
Morrison is Something to conjure with.
She is the gifted daughter of Louis Mor
rison of “Faust" fame, and has earned
her right to appear in a stellar role by
years of association with the traditions of
the stage. Aside from her histronic abil
ity, nature has been more than kind to
her from a physical standpoint. She has
youth and beauty, which are most valu
able requisites for those who sue for the
public favor.
“Carmen” is a character that requires
not only beauty, but must be imbued with
a sinuosity of movement that can never
be acquired. The successful exponent of
the character must be “born to the part”
—'hence the success that has attended Miss
Morrison’s career as an exponent of the
character. Miss Morrison has been, dur
ing her career, the leading support of
Joseph Jefferson.
TOURISTTRAIN
Seems to be a Little Late this
Year Says a Rail
road Man.
not comm quickly.
Much Later this Year Than in the
Past But it Will Pick up Says
Another.
A prominent railroad official, in speak
ing of the tourist traffic yesterday, said
that it is very late this season in putting
in its apeparance. “The tourists are not
coming to Macon, and they are npt going
through in the numbers they should,” he
said. “Usually at this time there is a
strong movement, and many tourists are
stopping over here for a few days’ stay,
while all 'the through trains are crowded.
This year but few are going through and
scarcely any are stopping here. They are
not coming from the North, nor are they
coming from the West. I do not know to
what to ascribe the meagerness of the
crowds that go 'through unless it be that
many more people than usual are going to
other winter resorts. I expect that Cali
fornia is getting a good many more than
went there last season.” Another rail
road man did not agree with this state
ment. This latter railroad man takes a
more hoptful view of the outlook and says
the season will probably open up right at
the proper time. This proper time, he
considers to be the middle of this month,
when the ve-tibuled trains from New
York to Florida will be put on. January
17 is the date upon which these trains will
leave New York.
EAST .MACON.
A Pleasant Meeting of the D. V. V. Cluo
Held on Wednesday.
The D. V. V. club, of East Macon held
an exceedingly interesting and pleasant
meeting on last Wednesday night at the
residence of Mrs. Sykes, on Church street.
The fascinating and exciting game of pil
low dex was the predominant feature of
the evening, and the winning side w’as
provided with some special detcaeies at the
very elegant super which followed.
The “tacky” party which they propose
to have at the residence of Mr. and Mrs.
C. C. Balkcom, in Fairview, as they will
produce it, will be some-thing new’ and
is sure to prove quite a success. The next
meeting ®f 'the club is to be held at the
residence of 'Mrs. Wasner, on Church
street on next Wednesday evening, and is
looked forward to with great interest by
its members.
COUNTRY ROADS PROTECTED.
The State Law Now Puts Them Under the
Same Regulations as Streets.
Under a recent act passed by the legis
lature a general law was put in force
which puts the macadamized roads under
the same protection from depredations as
the paved streets of the city. The same
penalty is prescribed for all violations. It
is dene to protect the roads from damage.
It may interfere in the laying of pipes
near the larger cities of the state, for the
law does not contemplate that -the pro
visions shall be violated even for this pur
pose. It is a matter that may materially
affect the people of the city, especially
those living just beyond the city limits.
The best time to advertise is all the
time.
