L Bats and Mercer Will Win the
Game —Boys in Great Shape.
, f
This afternoon the Mercer baseball team
’ and the Baltimore Orioles will cross bats
at the ball park for thte benefit of 'the
| hospital.
■' Though the Mercer boys hardly hope to
comt oir victorlouf', they will try to make
the . arm Interesting for the champions.
Many of the Baltimore team are playing
out of their positions, and the team will
be considerably handicapped for this rea
eon.
Th* game will be called at 3:30 and fol
lowing Is the way the two teams will line
up:
Baltimore. Position. Mercer.

Hughes, who will do the twirling for the
Baltimore t* am is a new man, but he is
said to be a wonder.
Manager Hanlon has loaned some of the
best, players on the team to coach the
M*r■ < rboys, and Interest will be kept up
on both side;. A large crowd will go down
k <o see the game.
I As the lead* r of a new revolution Mr.
1 J. J. McGraw, known to many as
B “Muggsy.” and to some as the Baltimore
r Spitz, fails to make much of an impres
sion. Tht Reds are not evincing any dis
position to stub their toes in a hustle to
rally around “Muggsy's" standard. There
has been but little discussion in the Red
cam j) of the Lt ague legislation against
rowdy ball. McGraw's declaration that
ball players must organize to fight for
•their rights fails to arouse any warriors
in the Cincinnati ranks. Manager Tom
.Burns handled the case nicely when he
said: “It isn’t necessary to good ball
playing to be profane. They could play
ball without it ten years ago, and we’ll
see if they can't do it now.’’
An insurrection, the corner-stone of
which would be obscenity, would not last
very long.
In one of the recent fanning fetes the
story tellers dwelt on the pranks of Mc-
Graw. “lie has got one of the wickedest
■tongues in the League.’’ declared Elmer
Smith, ‘‘and when he is stirred up he can
roast you in a fearfully cutting w-ay. I
recall one occasion when he gave me the
shoulder. The trick aroused Denny Lyons
•to comment, and. like a flash, he turned
on Denny and snarled: “What ails you?
Your are all swelled up because you
haven't been* drinking for a couple of
weeks. Why. if they’d drive a spigot into
you and turn on the faucet the park would
be flooded!' That crushed Lyons, and he
pha.bd: ’Don't, stir up that dynamite any
more!’ "
w W!::.t will be the effect, of the enforce
ment of the new regulations?
T! ::t ’> a matter of speculation. As far
Cincinnati is concerned the Reds will
not be weakened, for despite the claims
of long-distance critics bulldozing or brow
beating the umpire as a great factor in
play pl winning ball. Without (Ring any
examples. it may be said, however, that
there are other teams that rated "aggres
sive play" ami “terroizing the umpire” as
one and .the same thing. Some artists in
tl r “ trong-arm work" of the diamond
l.ive failed to read the handwriting on
the wall, in away that has appeal'd to
tlnD better judgment. “Ned Hanlon."
declared one of the Red.--, “was in the
oamor on more than one occasion. lasi

rnk Hawley Is Given Some Straight
Talk.
/”'• \r.tenio, T<x.. March 19—Manager
i-’-.c ’ ,rts*n;<d Hawley with one large
red ultimatum this morning. He told him
that ht could not travel with the team
unless he signed a contract. It is the only
way to maintain discipline. Hawley re
ferred to the strike now on among the
Orioles. “That doesn't effect the case.” re
plied Ewing. “There is no chance to get
one cent over the salary offered. If you
should report and sign a contract in
April, out of condition, I would be com
pelled to put you on the bench until, in my
judgment, you were in a salary-earning
*hape. It would do you no good to «e
--mam idle a year.” Hawley promised to
answer sometime today.

LITTLE BOY, BIG HORN
Created Quite a Refreshing Sensation This
Morning.
The storekeepers on Cherry street, who
| had be come drowsy with the warmth of
i thia perfect spring day, and were sitting
• dozing in their chairs waiting for the com-
I ing of a customer, were startled about
| noon by loud, fierce blasts from a horn
: that was evidently of the nature used by
. the ancient Celts to cheer on their des
pondent warriors in their battles with the
Gauk.
The first blast woke every one on the
street and as it echoed its hoarse notes
down the street, the old hack horses
pricked up their ears, and those who had
done service in the late rebellion, dreamed
on in peace, and lived again those days
when they had bore valiant riders into
the fray and listened to the “Rebel Yell.”
Curious faces peareel from the doorways,
and on many there were signs of amaze
ment as they who was the innocent cause
of all the excitement. A wee bit of a boy
marched pompously between two ladies,
and in his hands was a horn of the most
excruciating tone, a relic of the holidays,
and as fast as he could catch his breath
he produced a loud, though hoarse, note
on this instrument of torture to the nerv
ous.
The horn was as tall as its owner, paint
ed in gorgeous red, with the exception of
the flared ends, which were blue —and he
blew. No one interfered with the young
ster s amusement, and the ladies with him
were evidently Ignorant of the excitement
that he had caused. The blasts from the
horn were heard until he was out of sight.
