night to the residence of Mr. George W.
Powers, on Oran'ge street. The roof of the
house had caught from the inside, and the
fire was quickly extinguished with no dam
age to speak of.
The Dauntless case did not come up for
a hearing in the United States court in
Savannah at this term, and it now more
than probable that in view of the situation
the case against the plucky little filibuster
will never be tried.
Frank Wilson, of Pike county, was given
a hearing this morning before Commis
sioner Erwin on a charge of illicit distill
ing.
The case against The News Publishing
Co. is on trial today in the city court. Lav
ender is suing for damages on account of
an alleged libelous publication in the pa
per some time ago.
Dr. Charles Lanier Toole, dentist. Of
fice corner Second and Poplar streets.
On next Wednesday night Rev. Thomas

and a large crowd will greet him on his
coming this time.
An interesting meeting of the Yonah Re
bekah Lodge was held last night, and sev
eral prominent citizens were initiated. The
membership roll of the lodge is growing
rapidly, and the number will soon be above
the hundred mark.
Rev. M. A. Jenkins will fill the pulpit
at the Tattnall Square Baptist church to
morrow at 11 o'clock, and will speak on
the ‘‘Second Coming of Christ.”
Mr. Chester Jones had a lively encoun
ter with a negro this morning out on Ash
street, where he was superintending the
building of a house. He ordered the ne
gro from the building, and when the lat
ter refused to go a difficulty ensued, in
which Mr. Jones’ finger was badly cut by
a knife which the negro drew. Mr. Jones
soon convinced him with a piece of scant
ling that he had a right to control the
premises there.

interest in the community, and the pres
ence of the holy spirit is manifest at each

A BANQUET
Will be Tendered to Eminent Grand Com
mander Wiley.
The following from the Fort Valley
Leader tells of a banquet to be tendered to
Commander Wiley:
The Knights Templars of Ivanhoe Com
mandery No 10 were the first Masonic
order of this little city to christen the
new Masonic Temple here.
At a called meeting last Monday night
they conferred the Templar degree upon
Capt. W. A. Woodall, of the Southern.
Next Monday night they will confer the
Templar degree upon another campanion,
and also at 'the same time will be inspect
ed by Eminent Grand Commander Wiley,
of the Grand Commandery of Georgia.
After the Templar degree and inspection
is over there will be a grand banquet in
honor of the eminent grand commander,
and a banquet not of the old way but of
the new way (plain fare and coarse hab
it), for Ivanhoe Commandery is composed
of men that are upright, strictly sober and
temperate, and has gained sudh a title
through the other commanderies of the
state. And by all it is conceded that Ivan
hoe Commandery is the best working and
drilled commandery in the Grand Com
mandery of Georgia. Os such a reputa
tion they are justly proud, and ail the
members of the baby commandery propose
to keep and guard such a good name, and
again bear off the honors at the annual
conclave in May. The Fort Valley Cornet
band will lead thens in the parade on that
occasion.
