CONCEALED WEAPONS.
Mrs. Smiley of East Macon Fined SSO by
Judge Ro»s.
The vase of the state versus Mrs. L. T.
Smilry, charged with carrying conceal
ed weapons and pointing a pistol a: an
other, was heard in the city court yester
day afternoon.
Mention of the facts in the case were
made when the warrants for the arrest ct
Mrs. Smiley were sworn out at Judge
Balkcom’s court.
The evidence introduced was that a man
named Stripping had been killing chick
ens that belonged to Mrs. Smiley because
they persisted in coming into his garden
next door. He would kill the crickens
and carry them and put them on Mrs.
Smiley’s front porch. She made no com
plaint until Stripling killed a fine domi
neer rooster that she prized highly, and
•when she say the once king of the barn- I
yard lying cold- in death on her front
poroh. she determined upon revenge. Arm
ing herself with a pistol she went in search
of the slayer of her pec chicken. She found
him at a store talking to several gentle
men. She pulled her pistol and told him
to step out from the crowd and she would
have it out with him. Stripling did not
care to have a duel with a woman, espe
cially as he was not armed, and avoided
a fight, but went to the office of Judge
Balkcom and swore out a warrant against
Mrs. Smiley for pointing a pistol at an
other and carying concealed weapons.
Mrs. Smiley was present in court yes
terday with her husband, who is night
foreman at the Southern Railway yards.
Mrs. Smiley was acquitted of the charge
of pointing a pistol at another, but was
found guilty of carrying concealed weap
ons and fined SSO by Judge Ross. The fine
was paid and Mrs. Smiley and her hus
band left the court house seemingly sat
isfied.

TO BUILD ANOTHER BOAT.
Navigation Committee Addressed a Card to
Business Men.
The following card was addressed to the
business men of the city yesterday by the
Navigation committee of the Chamber of
Commerce, who will start to work taking
subscriptions for the building; of the new
boat in a few days:
Macon, Ga., March 28, 1898. —Dear Sir:
The Chamber of Commerce initiated in
1897 the movement to promote navigation
on the Ocmulgee river. As a result money
was raised and a boat built. The venture
has proved that the river is navigable for
boats like the City of Macon the year
round, and that a maintenance and in-,
crease in navigation facilities wil build up
Macon and increase her trade territory.
To this end at a largely attended meeting
of the Chamber of Commerce it was de
cided that another boat should be built
at once, and nearly one-half of the amount
was subscribed at the meeting. We appeal
to you to lend your aid to the enterprise.
Whatever benefits any line of trade, any
class of business, benefits directly or in
directly the whole community. We believe
that to -foster and increase navigation fa
cilities means the development of business
on broader lines in Macon. Stores waiting
for tenants will be occupied and new ones
will be built; for capital and business en
terprise will always come where induce
ments exist to attract them. With a de
velopment of business comes an increase
in population, with a demand for homes
and all the other benefits that arise from
such a condition. The owners of real es
tate, the retail merchant and the man de
pending on his daily wages will all be the
beneficiaries. From a business point of
view it is to the interest of every citizen
who can to contribute to this work. If you
are in. favor of what we believe will be
the legitimate result of our movement
please fill out return slip with number of
shares you will subscribe for. Shares $25,
payable in installments of $5 each per
month. We remain yours truly,

Bill Introduced by Mr. Reid
of Bibb, and Passed by Leg
islature Will be Enforced.
OIL! IITH HOOK AND LINE
Can the Fish in the Streams. Lakes
and Rivers of the County be
Caught —Full Text of Law.
The law which was passed at the last
session of tne legislature relative to the
trapping and killing oi’m-h in tiiv streams
of Bibb county will -be en-forced, and all
those who no.v have traps or nets iti the
ponds or streams around Macon are com
mitting a breach of the code of the state.
In September Mr. S. A. Reid introduced
a bill in the legislature to prevent the
catching of fish in traps, nets, seines and
otherwise destroying them with the excep
tion of a hook and Rue. The bill was duly
passed and has become a law without
many people of Bibb county knowing that
such a law existed.
The bill which was passed is as follows:
1. He it enacted by the geamral assem
bly of Georgia, and it is hereify enacted by
authority of the same, that from and after
ithe passage of this act. it ehall not be
lawful for any person to shoot, spear, gig,
catch with seines, or entrap with any de-'
vice whatever, except with hook and line,
any fish in any fish*in any stream, lake or
pond in the county of .Bibb for a period of
live years from the passage of this act.
i. Be it further enacted by the authority
aforesaid, that it shali not be lawful for
any person to keep or maintain upon any
stream upon his land, owned by himself or
another, or to permit to remain in any
stream or upon or oposite- to land owned
:by himself, any trap now placed in any
stream, lake or pond in the county of Bibb
during the said period.
3. Be it further enacted by the authority
aforesaid, that for every violation of this
act the person offending shall be guilty of
misdemeanor, and upon conviction shall be
punished according to section 1039, .volume
3, es the code of 1895.
There are hundreds of people in the
county who have traps and nets in the riv
er or ponds, and have no idea that they
are breaking -the law Ashen they permit
them to stay there.
The law was introduced to prevent the
destroying of the large number of fish an
nually destroyed in the county. When the
streams rise in the spring hundreds ®f
pounds are caught in the traps and nets,
avid for better disposition they are t-fhrown
away. The traps prevent the fish from go
ing up stream, and it has become a fact
that it is almost impossible to catch fish
with a hok and line around iMacon, they
have become so scarce.
Fishermen who enjoy the sport so long
as it is carried on with a hook and line,
say that they -will see that the law is en
forced, and will stop the destruction of so
unany of the fish in the streams in this
county.
