Manager Whitney oilered twenty-five
cents for all three baggers, ami also
twenty live een'ts for ali over two one bag
gers, but he had to stop this early in the
game, as the boys gut to pounding them
out right ami left.
M.instu Id went in the box for Mercer,
amt although he has be< n ill lor the past
few d'.tys, he pitched a splendid game. His
spt i d in tm last two innings was re
markable, ami the visitors could not touch
him.
’inc pitchers for the visitors were
changed, and had Goggins, the last man
in tin box, .been there aii during the game,
tiie result might have been different. He
lias tremendous speed, and not a single
hit was made oif of him.
It was tin- remark of the spectators that
tin- Wake Forrest team played the hard
est up hill game that 'they ever saw. Not
lor a minute did they lose hope, and when
the last man was to the bat, with .two
men out and the score 4 to 6 in favor of
Mercer, they put all their heart into the
play, but a short pop fly. such as the one
knocked under 'the same conditions Sat
urday went up and fell into Massenburg’s
ha mis.
Tiie playing of Stinson a't third, and of
Jones in left field deserves special men
tion. Jones caught his usual faultless
game, though suffereing with a lame fin
ger, and (lopeland in right field, covered
all the ground in his territory. Stinson’s
throwing front, third 'to first is the pret
tiest ever seen on the diamond here.
For ’the visitors Parker at short and O.
Same at third deserved credit.
A remarkable improvement with the Ti
gers is their improvement with 'the stick,
and it is a hard matter to find a heavier
lot of sluggers in the country. They have
profited by their practice with Baltimore,
and they have started tiie season with the
tnos't satisfactory results.

ATHENS TRYING TO CRAWFISH.
A letter has been received from the man
agement of -the University team at Athens
saying that it may be possible that they
will have to cancel their engagement with
the Mercer team this year, as there will
be conflicting dates.
The Mercer boys, however, know how to
'take this, and will hold them to their eon
iraet. Athens has never been anxious to
meet Mercer because she has always suf
ferd defeat with but one exception, and
that was last year, and since that time she
has become proud, and goes so fas as to
make the boast that Mercer is not in her
class, though she cannot deny that Mercer
cer always has better hall players. The
excuse offered by the University mon is
that they have all to lose and nothing to
mam hv mime with Mercer. Ijut the Mer
cer 'lays ,-r 1 the state generally and those
who happen to know the history of the
games that have been played between the
two colleges, do not agree with them and
look at the matter the other way.
Captain Harris says that he is making
preparations to strengthen the team in
every way possible for the coming of the
Georgia team, and when they come they
will get the warmest reception they have
ever had.
Next Saturday -ho Auburn team will
oome to Macon to play Mercer.
The Auburn team is sa-id to be a strong
one. but the Mercer boys’ do not fear them
for they were defeated by the Techs of
Atlanta, and Wake Forest easily defeated
he Techs, and Mercer defeated Wake
1 crest so that there is na, danger that
Auburn will come off victorious. There
are two men on the Auburn team. Tom
M Golriek and Warner Lowe. McGilrick
w ill cover third while Low-e plays at short.
I: is said that these two Macon boys arc
doing the best playing on the team.
BEWARE OF OINTMENTS FOR CA-
TARRH THAT CONTAIN MERCURY.
As mercury will surely destroy the sense
of smell and completely derange the w-’no'le
system when entering it through the mu
cous surfaces. Such articles should never
be used except on prescriptions from rep
utable ph'ysisians, as the damage they will
do is ten fold to the good you can possibly
derive from them. Hall’s Catarrh Cure,
manufactured by F. J. Cheney & Co., To

MACON NEWS TUESDAY EVENING, APRIL tahSgS.
Georgia Volunteer.
While strolling through one of our cen»*
eteries Sunday evening. I came upon, in
my walk, a lone grave with nothing but
a small board head piece which had rotted
to the ground and the name quite erased
by the storms of many years. But below
was these words in dim distinction. ’’’Pile
Georgia Volunteers. Co. D.” As I stood
there thinking of he war cloud hung over
our sunny land thirty-seven years ago
when freedom met her haughty fee, and
of the pr< ent day while- rumors are afloat
throughout lbc"brt ad-iii of our land, pa
triotism stirr.'d my In ait and these words
came in my n/.nd. and I her.in ham! them
to you. as they came from the futile
mind of a Georgia boy who loves the land
of his birth.
On a lonely mountain my wandering foot
steps led
The ivy lay thick beneath my feet, the
pine trees over head.
The trace of a dismantled fort laj- in th£
forest brave.
And in the shadows near my path I saw
,a soldier’s grave.
The brambles tr led with the words
upon the lonely mound:
The simple head board, rudely writ, had
rotted to the ground.
I raised it with a reverent hand, from dust
its words to clear.
But time had blotr-d ail but this, “ A
. Georgia 4 Volunterr.”
,1 raw t-he toad anti scaly snake from tan
gled ’covert start
And bide themselves among the weeds
above the dead man’s heart
But undi turbed, in sleep profound, un
heeding there he lay.
His coffin but the mountain soil, his
shroud Confederate gray.
Yet whence he came, what lips shall say
—whose tongue will ever tell
What desolated hearths and hearts have
been because he fell.
What sad eyed maiden braids her hair,
her hair which lie held dear.
One lock of which, purcbanee, lies with the
Georgia Volunteer.
What mother, with long watching eyes
and white lips cold and dumb
Waits with appalling patience for her dar
ling boy to come.
Her boy, whose mountain grave swells
up bu t one of many a sear. •
Cut. on the face of our fair south land, by.
"gory-handed war,
What fights he fought, what wounds he
wore, are all unknown to fame.
Remember on his lonely grave there is not
even a name.
That he fought well and bravely too, and
held his codntry dear,
We know, else he had never been “A
Georgia Volunteer.
He sleeps, what need to question now if
he were wrong or right?
Ho knows! ere this, whose cause was just
in God, the Father’s sight,
He wields no warlike weapons now, re
turns no foeman’s thrust,
Who, but a coward, would revile an honegt
soldier’s dust,
Roll, ye Ocmulgee, roll adown thy rocky
glen
Above thee lies the graves of one of
Robert E. Lee’s men
Beneath the cedar and the pine, in solitude
austere,
Unknown, unnamed, fogotten, lies “A
Georgia Volunteer.
