New York Yacht Club Tenders Its Property
to Government.
New Yorok, -April 28.—L. B. Congdon.
superintendent of the New York Yacht
Club Station No. 5, at the Manhansett
House,, Shelter Island, yesterday received
a telegram from T. Putnam, chairman of
the committee on stations of the yacht
club,, dircting that Station 5 be placed on
commission immediately, a short time ago
tot* government was tendered tire use of
all Clio stations of the yacht club for the
use of soldiers, marines or signal men, and
it is believed that the telegram today to
Mr. Congdon is in connection with the of
fer.
Mr. Putnam ordered that a long dis
tance telephone be placed in the station,
making connection with army headquar
ters on Governor’s Island.

A drawing teacher in the nrspar rc
ftinosof the borough of Manhattan tells
me of a curious instance of what she
calls the crescent freshness of tbo metro
politan youth. Tommy was the most in
corrigible pupil in that particular room,
making the half hour spent there daily
one of minted doubt and an rnish oi
spirit to the drawing teacher. The other
day Tommy was evidently engaged in
s»ime new form of mischief His draw
ing pajl lay upon the desk before him
uud his hands were hovering over it,
now swooping down nt one side of the

some ra» willing ant or other insect seek
ing to escape.
“Tommy, ’ said the drawing teacher
suddenly and sharply, “what are you
doing?’’
“Nothin." was Tommy's instant re
ply. Then he added, “Nothin but keep
in this ’ere dawg from rnuuiu away.’’
“What dog?" queried the drawing
teacher. “1 see no dog. W hat do you
mean! 1 ”

Tommy, ceasing his gymnastics under
her sharp glance and straightening
up. “Yt*r too fur away.” The other
scholars were all attention by this time,
which was precisely what Tommy
wanted, and ho assumed a look of un

The other children laughed nprnart
ouHy at this, whereupon Tommy sur
veyed them with such an assumption of
surprised indignation that their mirth
was redoubled. The teacher was now

downright falsehohd that must ho ex
posed as an awful example to the entire
grade of pupils. She walked slowly ami
