RESOLUTIONS WERE PASSED After Much Speechifying and Cheer ing They Volunteer Their Ser vices to the President. The most enthusiastic and the most pa triotic meeting of negroes that has been held in years was that which took place in the suepnor court room of <Bi<tlb county court house last night, when the colored population gathered in force to take action on the war. It was a unique gathering, and in its way mat kt I an epoch. The negroes- had been given notice of the meeting for some days ami they gathered in such force that it would have been wiser to have adjourned into the open air. It was impossible to find place for half of those wno clamored •for admission long 'before the meeting was called to order. Upstairs and downstairs the court house was packed and through Im- whole gathering a war-like spirit ran. A number of speeches were made by the bailers of the colored population in the city and every sentence of the speakers that referred to the patriotism of the ne gro wa: cheered to the echo. It is doubtful is as enthusiastic or as pe culiarly ami particularly a gathering of nignxs has been held in this city at any lime in its history. •’he upi-hot of the meeting was that the ne,loi , one and ail. pledged themselve.' to the pie. ideni should he need the’.’ - servi• . They tiamored tor recognition as vol unteers and t.ay ccndcmned the action of the governor which shut them out as vol l. . rs fn.ni ‘le sta’c of Georgia. It is altogether probable that as a re sult of this meeting a company and per haps two of them will be made up and will ask Io be sent to the front. They will Ge encouraged in their request for recog nition as volunteers by the representatives in Washington. The meeting last night lasted for about two hours. It was made up exclusively of the negroes and the eveidences of the en thusiasm is to be found today on every side. The committee on resolutions here re ported <a.s follows: "Whereas the inhuman and uncivilized warfare Married on iby ’the Spaniards in Cuba for the 'liasit tiwo years, ‘hia.s justly caused the condemnation of the Aimerioan people .an'd .the inite'rven.uioii of the Amer ican govcrnimcnt, land "Whereas the interven'tion of .the .Amer ican government, '.has enusbd -a decliaraition of war heti.veen t'he government of S|Jain and -the Un'ltod 'States, and "\\ -aert.as. HARPER’S BAZAR Very lady-like and practical for summer wear is the natty short jacket tailor gown 'which forms an attractive change from a coat and skirt- costume. The material of this gown is one of the new French cloths in subdued mixed color effects. The skirt., lined with soft tblack satin, is made per fectly plain. It has five gores and is a very desirable model of a simple tailor gown for general wear. Three and three-quarter yards is the width at the foot, and the back 'breadths of the skirt may be fitted in deep pleatis or gathered, as preferred. The little close-fitting coat, slightly double breasted and opening in front with a broad tailor collar, is braided with soutache. It is fastened across with round .tortoise shell buttons set between the braided motifs at the edge. These motifs are repeated on the collar and cuffs, as well as at the top ofthedarts, which are outlineci with braid. The coat ends alt the waist-line back and EATON WILL RACE BALD. Bicycle Riders Look Forward to the Match With Great Interest. Atlanta, May 2.Jay Eaton, the Indoor king of the bicycle track, will challenge Edie Cannnon Balb to meet him in Atlanta the early part of the month for a purse of $2,000. The Challenge will be forward ed to Bald within the next few days, and it is believed that it will be accepted. Manager Eaton, of -the local colllseu-m, is arranging some fine races for this sum mer. He promises to have the best talent in the country here. Chief among the features will be the race with Bald, if Bald accepts, which will, no doubt, dra.w an Im mense crowd. Both men have been 'here before, but they have never had a real test of their merits on the wheel. Eaton claims he can beat 'Bald, and Bald is equally cer tain of his ability to defeat Eaton -and when these two stars meet there is likely to be -an exciting contest. Tt is probable that the next race will be held in the coliseum about May 12t'h, al thou ;h the date has not been definitely fixed. Tt is hoped that the Eaton-Bald race may be pulled off on this occasion. The management promises to give the pub lic some first-class sport. Bents the Klondyke. Mr. A. C. It did so much good that I would like to know what you would charge me for one dozen bottles.” Mr. Anderson wanted it both for his own use and to supply it to his friends and neighbors, as every fam ily should have a botle of it in their home, not only for rheumatism, but lame back, sprains, swellings, cuts, bruises and burns, for which it is unequalled.
