The gold coin in the United Stales is mortgaged ten times over to alien credit ors. Stealing Dewey's Thunder. The effort oi tin administration to make it appear that the (battle ot Manila was conceived and iplanned in Washington is nothing less than eontemtiible. While ac cording; Uommodore tn wey lull praise’ the Navy impartial nt does .not ifail to have it clearly under»tiM.>d that Seeretary Long had arrangid Uhe whole thing and knew just how it was to-be dime. -Hardly had the smoke of battle cleared away Uve-fore the. staUmen't was made that the result was just as (he Ipres'ldent and Secretary Lung had anticipated— in -fact, as they had planned. All of which is iproibaibly unitrue, and certainly in had taste whether it is true or nut. To run the ibatteries of a naval fortress, heedless of mines, and attack an opposing squadron backed by an army on shore, as Uommodore Dewey did .it -Manila, was contrary to all preconceived notions of strategic scientists, and no one w ill believe that Secretary Dong was naval gemius enough u> -plan such a battle. On the con trary. it was generally understood at tlie outset that according to the ipolicy dic tated by the administration, the hero of Manila should have blockaded the port and spent several weeks in giving the eni.niy time to complete their pruparalions, before laying siege to and reducing .their fortifications. But such was tine irregtfi larity in the proceedings of John Paul Jones wlnn he attacked the British ship Serapis with the leaking and sinking Bon homune Richard. After all. daring and dogged determination to win are more valuable qualities in a commander than is book learning In the science of war. Dewey is to be given fufl credit for his victory, and the administration is guilty of contemptible eomhnet when it attempts to take any of tfhe credit to itself. It has al ready stirred -.’ho hearts, and occasionally moved the lips, of many who have this weik witnessed the departure of more than three hundred of the flower of MicAn’s young rnanhoo-1. The fathers, mothers, wives and sisters of these young men have bravely given them up-to duty’s stern call, but with thoughts of disease, of hardships, of danger, of an interrupted business career in their minds, these -cannot fail to ask theme-selves, “For what?” A.nd the only answer is “Cuba libre.” It is not enough that this should be the only aim and result of this struggle, when we t lew our deserted sitreets, our desolate homes and sad faces, perhaps later -the lifeless (bodies of some of our iboys ns the price of this achievement of ralher ques tionable good. Me know not -what others may think, lint -as for ourselves we do not consider the game iw-orth the candle. \nd we warn the ponpetrators of all those hardships that they will have to do some explaining when next 'they ask the people to again put them where they can do so much hanm. The anti-war spirit is working; the people are thinking. If wo freeze onto the Phillipincs what -are we going to -do with our Monroe doc trine? z ' ' Just One Chance for Bill. It having 'been decreed that Georgia’s martial governor is not to be a brigadiei general, nor yet a corporal, nor even a high private in the rear ranks, the avenues which 1< ad to military fame seem to be closed to him. With that interest which we have always exhibited in his .welfare, ami not umnimliul of Georgia’s interests at the same time, we have a suggestion to make which, if put into execution, will open up a new field of political usefulness for this past grand master of the game called politics. We beg to call the gentleman’s attention to the tempting field offered in Cuba, foi such genius as is his. 'And we mention the matter, not because wc love Cuba less, but because we love Gcoargia more. Taking it for granted that Cu'ba will soon be given a chance to hoe her own row, we forsec an alluring chance for William Yates Atkin son to turn things to his own account. Think of what a politician like Bill Atkin son could do to a new born republic like Cuba. He could easily introduce a few political curves that they are not onto, and before they could find him he would have things all his own way. There he would find the opportunity to gratify his overweening ambition to be dictator of something or other. He would be able to organize a political dynasty that could arrange the laws and everything else to suit its own ends. If he shoull find any difficulty in gathering up follow ers over there, he could easily mobilize a goodly number right here in Georgiy, and his native state would have no furtner fault to find with him —-an-l, of course we haven’t the right to speak for Cuba. With some of the political freebooters that have followed his fortunes here in Georgia at his back, what he would do to Cuba, in tho language of the street, would be a . plenty. In/t word, so to speak, he would have a lead-pipe cinch. As dictator, he could make of his pet Captain Brown (to make a colonel of whom he disorganized the entire Georgia militia) commander-in chief of the army, while Knowles, of Rome, and other satellites might make up a cabinet to his liking. It would be sad, of course, to think that Georgia would have to give him un, but we believe she could survive the blow. She has certainly stood more at the same hands ■luring trie past four years. We shall nut, however, try to influence the gentleman further than by making the plain sugges tion. Nor do we charge him tor it. In fact, we lizolt only to the people of Georgia for appreciation. And now that military glory seems to be a ptrsimnaon-too-high for his pole, we are Justified in believing that he will seize upon the opportunity herewith brought to his attention and work it for all it is worth. Seeing his political future in Geor gia fast petering out, he may be willing to take charge of Cuba and run things.
