When we look at the grey-beard vete rans of the civai war, our mind involunta rily picl.un s Hi. • triiggl. of thirty-odd years ago carried on by sueli as these. Hut we only n. t.l to think a little, to do a little sum ‘in subtraction to realize that then, as now, tile soldiers who did the fighting were mere Isiys. Ami we need have no apprehension, therefore, over the fact that the troops now going to ihe front are made up mainly of young men an.l hoys. It has been said that the youngsters .ire tin- best fighters, ■because their plij.ic.il condition fortifies them for the hardships of war. And they have tiie ardor and daring which youth gives to stimulate them in the contest. No better material for an army can he boasted of by any state in the Union. The veil rans of the war will tell you so, be cause a majority of I lie latter made their flighting records when young. The Knox ville Tribune, in commenting on tiie sub ject, pays i.tiis tribute to tiie “Iwys.” "Tiie lies! material of which to make fighting soldiers is found in boys from HI io 21. Tliis is tiie expression of old commanders. There were many captains in the civil war who were under 20 years of age. There were .brigadier generals only 21 years old: General Grant was under 40 when lie entered I lie war. Stonewall Jack eon liad won immortal lame at 38 and died at 39. General Sheridan was a general at 30. Fitzhugh Lee was a major genral at 29. 'Alexander had conquered the world before lie was 33. Napoleon became master of Egypt, crosed the Vlps and fought the lhatle of .Marengo at 30. Young men make the best soldiers. The civil war was 'fought .by young men and boys. There are living veterans of that war who are now only 50 years of age, yet that war tiegun thirty-seven years ago." Here is a new complication. The Span iards are such liars that the Washington Post, feats it will ilie difficult to believe them winn they cry "enough.” Should Brook No Interference. Already the sugestion lias come that Germany will demand a voice in the dispo sal of tiie Philipines, and this intimation ds doubtless merely a forerunner of others from oilier European powers, so that the United Slates may expect to meet with European interference in settling this af fair with Spain. Tiie News was opposed to this war, as much because it believed there was an honorable and satisfactory way out of it as because it preferred an adversary nearer our own size, but now that we are into it, we hold that the United States should brook no interefenee from outside sources. By no process of reasoning can Germany or any oilier European nation be consid ered as having a right to a voice in the 3‘hillipine affair, and any pretensions from that source should be met with an emphat ic declaration from this government. it will be no child’s play to resist Ger many or tiie other powers of Europe, but it would be more to our credit to assume and maintain such a position than merely to subdue Spain. We have undertaken this affair on our own hook and without the consent or co-operation of other na tions; so should we conduct it to the end. Else we will be forced to acknowledge that we can be dictated to. and submit much more tamely than Spain is doing when con fronted by a superior force. We have taken the Pliilliipines; lot us hold them until we are ready to dispose of them in our own way. The tight that is being waged against Colonel A. D. Candler by the ring politi cians is very bitter. The people may be assured that if his record was not clear (he would be arraigned day in and day out from one end of the state to the other. He is a clean man. and their fangs get no hold on him.—'Bainbridge Democrat. That Insurgent Army. At last the truth as to the size of the insurgent army in Cuba has come to light. We have been convinced all along that the people for whom the United States is do ing so much represent but a small part of the poulation of Cuba, and that their army In the held numbered but a few thousand men. who were enabled to prolong the struggle merely by conducting a sort of guerrilla warfare—pretty much the same P an pursued by Jesse James and his fol owers in harrassing and evading twenty times their numbers when these outlaws th< terrors of western civilization. But the statement was seriously made that the insurgent army now in Cuba numbers 30.000 men, who only needed arms and ammuniton to themselves drive the Spaniards from Cuba. It having been de termined upon to furnish these arms etc for this army of 30.000 insurgents, it be vame necessary to ascertain the exact in U^ b ‘w be,Ore the plan cou,d be carried into effect. And now the authorities at hud when it comes to arm latt th L\ nSUr T nt amy in Cuba ’ that tbe nw n thl y a “ yth - Inst€ad of "* n there are not a quarter of that manv a MnD ,S, h a " t tOb ’- th<> SCa "^ d guerß t’ons . comprise the rebel force. Consequently the plan formulated for equipping some 30,000 to 60.000 insurgents to .airy on the war during the rainy sea t naUShL l£ WaS ori *nally intended to keep our troops j n camps of wSrT'n ", IhiS , SUmmpr ’ Atting them ail well drilled and disciplined, and send them Bm r th° I” the faH tO flnish Ihp J° b , ut the truth having been made known as 3. the ,7 s ‘ lrKent ar “F. these plans had to be suddenly changed. Hence the plan is now to make a rapid invasion in force to Se C< k a r na t Dj ° ther Cities ’ and tuie the Spanish forces before the tor rential rains of midsumer come. There was another “extra” frost in Ma con yesterday. But very few people-werz aught, the majority of them preferred to wait until the usual hour and read the full account in The 'News. There’s no use for others to try. The News is the only paper in Macon that can or does give the news on the day it happens. < A Piece of Fooihardiness. However, the brave ensign and sea men who lost their lives in an effort to obey impossible orders deserve the highest praise, and their memories should be hon ored as the flrat needless sacrifices tp an unnecessary war The hill of fare at Camp Norihr-n indi- ' cates that the government is determined that the boys shall not grow fat and lazy A Table of Distances. Almost daisy we are asked, either over the telephone of in person, to give the dis tance .between Hong Kong and some other place or to stat, off-hand how far (Manila is from somewhere else. Wo gather from the Griffin News and Sun that Editor Glessner is also shocked over the alleged fact that Colonel Candler “cusses” a little. We are not given to profanity ourselves and wo do not like it in others, but we confess to a deep admira tion for any man who has a “cussing" vocabulary that can shock our friend Glessner. And now we will not he at all urprised to learn that sanctified brother of the News and Sun is opposing some body or other on the ground that he im bibes too freely of coffee or other strong beverages. . ••• A great many puns have been made on Dewey’s name, but the Albany iHerald goes the average punster several better ind plays the whole gamut in the follow ing: O Dewey was the morning Upon the first of May; And Dewey was the admiral Down in Manila 'bay; (And Dewey were the regent’s eyes, Those eyes of royal blue: And Dewey feel discouraged? 1 Dew not we Dew! The Macon Evening 'News is wrathy be cause Uncle Sam placed the dusky dons ■apt tired off the coast of Florida in charge of negro troops. The Ivlacon ladies atoned for this w'rong, (?) however, by showering flowers upon the Spaniards. They were the lions of the day in Macon last Sunday.— Madison Advertiser. Our only surprise is that the person who could not agree with us in the above sen timent did not also place an interrogation point after the “ladies.” Attention is called to the fact that sev eral bill collectors in other states have been taken for Spanish spies and were shot on the spot. In times -like these a man has a right to be suspicious. If the Powers of Europe attempt to bring pressure to bear on the United States with reference to the Philippines, they find that the United States is not Turkey nor Greece. Now that Admiral Sampson has cap tured all the Spanish fishing craft afloat he has decided to do something. CUBA WILL BE FREE. Uncle Sam has gone to war. With Spain across the sea.
