Rumors of desertion are Hying thick and
fast on all sides, and the chief complaint
is tbit the men are not 'being sufficiently
fed. and for this reason want to return to
their horn, s. The majority of the men ar.
looking on the bright side of things and
tire spending what money they have to sat
Issy appetites that have not been suffi
ciently supplied at the mess table. All O’,
the companies have been forced to adopt
the plan of portioning out each man's ra
tioins in his plate lb. fore he comes to th,
table, for when the scant supply of rations
were placed on the table in pans they wen
gobbled up by a few with trie result that
soln, had to go hungry or else 'buy some
thing from the lunch counters.
Some of the men sit around and draw
pictures of big tat turkeys on a dish ready
to 'be served, large, juicy steaks and bis- '
cult.
Two companies of the Savannah Guard
arrived yesterday afternoon with ISO men
Lieutenant Walter Corbett, of the Floyd
'Rifles, is one <*f Ihe most popular oflic. r
in camp, and all of the men in his com
mand are proud of him. Lieutenant 80l
'Hazlehurat, of the Volunteers, has als,
won many friends, and he is voted one oi
the handsomest men In the regiment.
The large number of desertions that
have already taken place has alarmed tin
company ea'ptalns, and they are all tryini
to impress their men with the seriousnex
of such an action.
Seventeen m, misers of the Atlanta com
mauds, seven from 'Savannah, one from
Macon and several from the artillery' de
sorted before they were mustered in. ami
now there is a reward of It) each for their
arrest.
A captain of one of the companies said
to me today that he was alarmed at th.
slate of affairs, and that the freedom will
which some* of the men spoke df desertin'
was evidence that they did not know whai
the consis|uenee would Ibe. " Desert hit
now Is not what it 'would have been sev
eral months uno," he said, "for new th.
penally is dtalh, and heaven knows we d<
not want to shoot any of our own men."
The situation viewed from a speculative
standpoint is serious. At present nearly
all of the men have some mon. y witl
which to 'buy cigars, cigarettes, tobaco
and lunches, 'but when this gives out and
■they will have nothing Ibul army ration
the discontent will be more pronounced
and those men who have suddenly beer
(smvvrted from tree and liberty loving cit
izens into a soldier in the United Stale
army it is feared that the dissatisfactioi
of the men who have never been subject
i.d to the hast military discipline wil
commit some breaches of military disci
pline.
To-day the commissary general at Wash
ington was notified to forward the uni
forms for the men by express, and they
will be here in a few days.
The announcement has 'been made tha
the old guns of the stale traps, and all o
the government equipment that have beei
in their keeping the called in and given t<
the troops here. The equipments now it
posesioti of the state troops belonging t,
th. government are guns, belts, bayonet.--
haversacks, knap-acks, canteens and am
munition. \il of this property has beet
or. Lit. d shipped to Griffin at once.
It has been reported here that the peopl,
trf Macon had raised nearly $5,000 forth.
binetit of the volunteer soldiers. If thi
be true it could never be used more advati
taageou-dy than now to make up the pres
ent deficiency in the food supply.
When it is announced in the campin:
streets that the mail has arrived there i
a rush to see who has a letter, and ever,
one who gi ts even a newspaper is envie..
by the less fortunate ones. The soldiers
■welcome a letter from anyone, even though
it hi a dun —they love to see the old post
mark.
No one has the least idea hew long w.
will be here, ami there is no doubt but
what it would be a good idea to move th.
volunteers to t’hieamauea or Tampa ai
once, for there they would be thrown with
well disciplined men. and there would not
lit* so much dissatisfaction. Many of th,
'boys are already homesick, because thev
are so n< ar home and canot go there. It
is underste.d that after lite m.-n have be-n
in th service a month they will be al
lowed a few days' furlough. It was an
nounced to-day’ that the soldiers’ pay
would start from the day they enlisted.
Though there is dissatisfaction at pres
ent. there is not a doubt but that every
man pi.-sent will do his duty nobly when
the time comes, and the old spirit of pa
triotism is not dead. When the band plays
Dixie nothing can restrain the enthusiasm.
The ■announcement that seventeen of the
Hussars w<re turned down on their ex
amination here is an error. None of those
that were passed at Macon were turned
down.
All of the Macon boys gathered around
me now under the shade of Georgia pines
send love to all the home folks, and ask
that it be stated that not a single Macon
man has remitted a single breach of dis
cipline or been in the least disloyal te.
his country.
To-day the government takes charge of
the men, and from now on will feed and
clothe them. The men are anxious to
know whether or not the Hit! of fare will
be improved and the daily rations in
creased.
The statement that the boys will be al
lowed to draw $5 right away is a mistake.
Bach man will be allowed to draw $5
worth at the camp commissary, and it
will be- deducted from his wages at the end
of the month. Some of the boys are al
ready broke, and some of them left Macon
without a cent of money.
Si veral quiet little games ol poker have
been broken up Jby the Y. M. <C. A. work
ers. who have been putting in some good
work here. They distributed tracts, and
have projtosed to erect a mission home on
the camp grounds.
Lester Bayne, of the Volunteers, who
was thought to have been seriously hurt
while boxing with Louis Vannueei, is
able to be up. He was unconscious for
some time, and the camp surgeon was
called in.
It is evident that the camp officials con
sider the Hussars the most reliable and
efficient company here, and Captain Hell
is called to all the conferences of the of
ficials. Orderlies are selected from the
- Hussars, and the name the company has
won for itself in the past is remembered
J by all old military men here, and all mem
bers of th, company are proud of the dls-
■ tiDvction they bear.
The Volunteers are playing in great
luck The tents furnished them have been
discarded, and th, y have put up their own
property. The army rations furnish’d
, th-re only form a part of their diet, and
: i.’ii y probably fare better than any eompa
|ny in camp But all the Volunteers are
i cl” ■ r. ind they love to have a good time.

HE HAD HIM THERE*
How » PaiiAonger Clpt Even With a Street
Car Conductor.
He was intent upon his nev. spapor
when the conductor came along and
stopped in front of him.
The conductor stoopeii down to gat a
better look at his face and said, “hare,
please.”
The man with the paper paid no at
tention, and finally the conductor tap
ped him gently on the arm.
“Did I get your fare?” asked the con
ductor as the man with tho paper looked
up.
Now, if there is anything in thij
world that has a tendency to make a
man who has paid his fare get angry it
is to have the agent of the corporatiou
to whom such fare was paid come along
and ask him if he has paid it. It may
be all right, lint it always seems as if
there was an inference that some one is ;
trying to beat tho road. Tims it hap- i
pened that the man with tho paper re
plied rather sharply:
“ You ought to know. ”
“Oh, it's ail right, sir!” explained
the conductor hastily. “No intention to
offend, you know. I merely wanted to
make sure.”
Then ho returned to the platform
while tho man with the paper returnee
to his reading.
A few minutes later the man with
the paper went out on the platform
himself, and just before reaching his
corner he gently tapped the eondnctoi
on the arm, even as tho conductor had
tapjH'd him.
“Did you ring up my fare?” he asked.
There were iiumcamte indications
that tho conductor waa getting mad.
He tried to say something, but only
spluttered.
“Oh, it’s all right!’’ the man with
the paper hastened to explain. “No in
teutiou to offend, you know. 1 only
wanted to make sure,”
Then he swung off the car, and when
he reached home his wife detected traces
of a faint smile on his face. —Philadel

Many soldiers now feel the effects of the
hard service they endured daring the war.
Mr. George S. Anderson, of Rossville, York
county, Penn., who saw the hardest kind
of service at the front, is now frequently
troubled with rheumatism “I had a severe
attack lately,” he says, "and procured a
bottle of Chamberlain’s Pain Balm. It did
so much good that I would like to know
what you would charge me for one dozen
bottles." 'Mr. Anderson wanted it both for
his own use and to supply it to his friends
and neighbors, as every family should have
a bottle of it in their home, not only for
rheumatism, but lame back, sprains, swell
ings, cuts, 'bruises and burns, for which
it is unequalled. For sale by H. J. Lamar

For Three Years He Suffered Con Id
Hardly Breathe at Night—One Nostril
Ciosed for Ten Years.
Mr. A. M. Ramsey, of De Leon. Texas,
was a sufferer from Catarrh in its
worst form. Truly, his description of
his sufferings seem little short of mar
velous. Instead of seeking his couch,
glad for the night’s coming, he went to
it with terror, realizing that another
long, weary, wakeful night and a
struggle to breathe was before him.
De Leon, Texas.
Messrs. Lippman Pt-os., Savannah, Ga.,
GENTS: 1 have used nearly four bottles of
P. P. P. t was afflicted from the crown of my
head to the soles of my feet. Your P. P. P.
has cured my difficulty of breathing, smother
ing, palpitation of the heart, and has relieved
me of all pain. One nostril was closed sos
ten years, but now I can breathe through it
readily.
I have not slept on either side for two years:
in fact, 1 dreaded to see night come. Now I
sleep soundly in any position all night.
1 am 50 years old, but expect soon to be able
to take hold of the plow handles. I feel glad
that I was lucky enough to get P. P. P., and I
heartily recommend it to my friends and the
public generally.
Yours respectfully,
A. M RAMSEY.
