The iNew.i publishes today the adver tisement of Recover l ii-ley, offering for rale the electric light and power plant of th. dm.>n i. i: Light oif Water t’oinpa , un-ii-i such ti tms is have been fixed by the court. Tm pnm uling means an immediate sale of tiie property, in all probability to t'tie Macon am! Indian Spring Railroad Company. trial corporation having already made ar. ofi< r which .veins in every way .satisfactory to the <•>•• diton ami the court. Ju onl. r that i fair opportunity my be given other to bid for the property, how ever, tiie court ha.; very wisely ami justly order) .I the same disposed of at public sale. tn < •ninmi with tiie entire Macon pub lic The News considers it very fortunate lor file city and the romp.my itself chat a transfer (’I rim property is .o be made, no matter -u no may lie the successful bidder For it is manliest tiiai tiie new owners, whosoevi r they may be, will not be con tent to operate the plant with its present equipment or attempt to appease tire Ma con 'pablie with such a service as has been tolerated so long. While we cannot, owing to the adversi ties that havi overtaken the old company and tiie legal complications attendant thereon, justly blame anyone for the pres ent anil past insufficient service offered people, it is quite dear, now that the plant 4s to find new owners, that further failure to meet tire .public's d< tnatid would result, and rightly so, in a new oompaiiy entering the field. The city has long accepted inadequate aerviee, poor lights, insufficient power and all that, mainly through a spirit of len iency for an insolvent corporation. Now, however, the city, in placing its contract for lights, ami tiie .general public will ex pect, ami no doubt receive, a service in keeping with the demands of the times. Hut even as It is the new owners will Ibe, nor should they be. allowed a monopo ly of the business. They may rightfully expect, provided they guarantee adequate service, a contract front tiie city, but this would, by no means, c lose t'he field to oth ers. It is unlikely, however, that an inde pendent company would care to enter a (field already propertly tilled, so that the new company can have a monopoly only by giving tiie peojde such service as they have a right to expect in return for fair compensation. And to such a monopoly the public can make no ixissible objection. Hut not alone does the city benefit by a sale of this property. It seems to us that the owners or creditors of the .Macon (las Light and Water Company have acted wisely in ridding themselves ot the elec tric light plant. For the reason that the company is unable to properly equip the same, thus coustatitly inviting competition of a character so formidable as to practi cally drive them from the Held. Thus they would have suffered a total loss, whereas they now get out with a fair and even liberal price for their electric plant, and are left free to devote their full ener ergles to the gas and water plant, which again promises an improved service. In deed, the latter, through the wisdom of the court and with the consent of the parties at interest, is already undergoing impor tant changes, which insure a greatly im proved service. So that in whatever way it is viewed, the disposition that is about to be made of <i portion of this property seems a good thing for all concerned. Macon will now take rank, both in the matter of electric light and water supply, .with any city of equal size in the country, while both the old company and the new will probably find ibis a remunerative field. The latest dispatch that “General Alger had no intention of retiring from the office of Secretary of War," was not needed to convince an unsuspecting public that the general is not of a retiring disposition, ex cept (as bis record shows) in certain pecu liarly delicate circumstances of war. En sconced in the war department, with the oportunity of commanding, at a safe dis tance. armies of vetera is in the field, he will be among the last to ask for a leave of absence. What a'. Invasion of Cuba Means. Lossada. Inspector-General of the Span ish forces in Cuba, recently issued his of ficial report showing that out of 200,000 soldiers sent by Spain to put down the re bellion in Cuba since January, 1X95. a fa tality unprecedented by that recorded in the history of any former campaign in modern times, of 147,000 as killed, died or sent back home wounded or unfit for ser vice. having only 53,000. a little over one fourth part for active duty. M liile there is some comfort in the above guns, as showing the weakness of Spain’s < üban army and the difficulties in the way of successfully concentrating an army oil the island, there is also much food for se nous thought therein. If the United States has the same expe rience. an invasion of Cuba is not to be relished by our troops, even though the danger from Spanish bullets is not consid er, tsl. it is conceded that the insurgents iV'h c<Mnparativ e l y few Spaniards U battle, certainly a smaller number than th<- Spaniards may hope to kill of United States troops, so that disease Is mainly re sponsible for the terrible mortality above noted. And disease is no respec tor of uni forms. knows no flag and maintains strict neutrality between two enemies. We mar have the advantage of better discipline better food, etc., in our favor, but even then, we canont expect to escape entirely the ravages of yellow fever and smallpox. he outlook is not encourageing. from whatever standpoint it is viewed. The soldiers are ready and willing, now to take greenbacks in payment for their services on the tented fields upholding the honor of our country but the bloated bond robbers of Wall Street, and the Rothchilds. who furnish money to Spain to fight us. while they profess' friendship for us. demand gold—the pound of flesh cut nearest the heart of the nation—in pay ment for interest on the bonds they force this weak and profligate administration to fasten upon the people.
