'GEORGIA'S QUOTA
OF THE SOLDIERS
Will be Called Upon to Fur
nish About Fifteen Hun
dred Men,
RUSH WILL NOT BE GREAT
Though There are Still a Number
Who Are Anxious to Get Some
War Experience,
The quota of soldiers from the state of
Georgia under the call made in the presi-
J nt’s proclamation yesterday will be
about fifteen hundred men. ’
This will have taken something like four
thousand mm out of the state of Georgia
when the full number is made up.
It is given out that the men will not be
recruited this rime from the national guard
as was the case before to a very large ex
tent, though the volunteers went in as in
dividuals.
This time it is not at all probable that
many of the state militia will offer their
services, as they were pretty well ex
hausted before, and those who had any
desire to go have probably offered their
sepvict 3 and have been accepted.
When it is remembered that fully thirty
'percent of the recruits offering themselves
before were rejected, it will be seen that
the l number from the whole state that
have either gone or have been rejected is
vciy large.
It will not be a.-* easy to get together the
men at this time, though there are many
Avho want the chance to go to the front. It
is thought that the same rule for raising
the volunteers will apply as under the first
e.ill for the volunteers. The character of
troops wanted from Georgia is a question
that is exciting the interest of the Geor
gia malitiamen. More than a regiment
will be needed from the state and what
will constitute the (remainder, which will
be about 350 men, is an important ques
tion. • *
It was suggested yesterday that a regi
ment of infantry of white soldiers would
be called for and a battalion of negroes.
U is known that the negroes make desi
rable soldiers in the hot climate and can
stand the heat of the sun as well as the
atmosphere. Under these conditions and
considering the number of negro soldiers
in Georgia, the state could easily furnish
half of her quota from this state with ne
groes.
Georgia leads in state volunteer cavalry,
and among the troops in the state there
are some Excellent companies of horsemen,
and rough* riders are considered superb
soldiers. This state has the only regiment
Os volunteer cavalry in the United States,
.and on this account if cavalry is needed
by the war department a demand in Geor
gia may be made for some of her horse
men.
As soop as the oifflclal notification comes
stipulating the number that shall con
stitute (h orgia’-s quota under the call for
7;.,000 the work or raising the troops will
begin. The additional work which will
be oecasiened by the new call will proba
bly require office assistants.
One of the first things that will be done
will be the naming of officers. The re
cruiting stations will be opened and'men
will be enli.sted and put thrpugh the phys
ical examination as rapidly as they are
enrolled.

IN VESTMENTS
The Choir at St. Paul's Will Appear on First
Sunday in June.
The first vested choir ever seen in Macon
will be found at St. Paul’s church after
the first of June.
The first Sunday In June falls on the 7th
and on that day a full boy’s choir will be
first seen at the church.
The boys are now in training and will
be ready when the time comes.
The choir has met with the approval of
a majority of the congregation though
there is some little opposition among those
who wish to keep the old quartet choir.
But the best church nuisic of the day is
given by the boy and men choirs all over
the world and the advantage to the church
will soon become apparent.
It is hoped that the church will soon be
able to secure the services of a number of
tenors and basses who will also wear the
vestments.

HOW ENGLAND TOOK CUBA.
From November to March Would be the Only
Proper Time for Attack.
Cuba was cnee in the possession of Eug-
Inad.
In the spring of 1762 a fleet left Fal
mouth for the West Indies. George, the
third Earl of Albemarle, commanded the
exp-di:ion. Under bis served his two broth
ers. June t>, 1762. the fleet cast anchor be
fore Havana with an army of 11,000 men.
At daybreak on the ith the siege com
menced.
After Havana had fallen, the Earl of
Alurmaile wrote acme to the secretary ot
state: "We are now better acquainted with
the climate than we were when the present
expedition was undertaken, and it is cer
tain that the only season of the year for
troops to act in is from the beginning of
Novembe%to Abe latter end of .March.'
The 'Moro fort was the chief point of
nsistance; it guarded the entrance to the
harbor of Havana. Supporting' the guns of
the fort were 1.1 Spanish men-of-war.'Six
of these carried 70 guns, one carried 94
and the remainder were sixty-gun ships.
It took three weeks to get the seige guns
landed and in position. The Spanish fought
brav-ly and did great damage to the at
tacking fleet.
By the middle of July the defense was
practically at an end. On August 12 arti
cles of capitulation were signed and the
victors set up the British flag in Havana.
At the assault of Moro 706 Spaniards
were killed, wounded or taken prisoners.
The Spanish loss altogether was not less
than 5,00 n men. The British losses were
560 during the fight, and by the end of
October (the mtn had been dying from
sickness owing to the climate) the death
roll rose to 4,708.
Although Albemarle sent off a great
number of survivors to New York to re
cruit their health, the mortality was great
there, and ho eventually found himself in
command of only 2,000 men. His estimate
of the force necessary to hold Cuba was
6.000 men. Spain today has more than
100,000 men in Cuba.
On F( bi nary 10. 1763, the treaty of Paris
was concluded between England, France
and Spain, and Cuba passed again under
Spanish rule, being givn up almost for the
asking.

DIRECT LINE
TO SAVANNAH.
By June Ist it is Thought the
Communication Will be
Complete.
An effort is being made to change the
route of the iD. A. Tyson long distance tel
ephone line from Macon to Savannah, and
which is now completed to Blicfaton,
twenty-five miles from Savanna.i, on the
Central lailioad, in order that connection
may be cstablisnta with Meldrun. if the
effort is sueccss'cl it *will necessitate con
siderable cari.ge in the line.
By Ute time the line is com, fl .’tel from
Btichhu to Eden, from which poin; tne
connection w'th (Meldrim would be male,
either with the main or by spur line a de
cision, will btve been reached. I, ,s said
if the line itroceeds direct from Edeu to Sa
vannah, via Meldrim, an atteupt may be
made to use the Central railroad’s poles
from there. This would mean intermina
ble detail and red tape, however, which
would be more tedious than the telejhone
company would care to undertake. " In the
event this is not carried, which is altogeth
er probable, a Spur to iMeldrim from Eden
may be built and the line brought
there direct. In either event it seems pos
sible that the linq, will touch that point.
Already the company has petitioned the
Savannah council for permission to erect
poles in the city to its central office at
Drayton and St. Julian streets. ,
The Savannah News says:
"No doubt Mayor 'Meldrim feels kindly
toward the company and will not antago
nize its efforts to enter the city. It is be
lieved the company will receive (recognition
from council by which a right of way will
be granted, or assistance otherwise given
to get such advantage as it appears will be
valuable to Savannah in many ways,.
Under any circumstances Mr. Slater
says that the indications point to the com
pletion of the line by June 1. People in
Savannah can then converse with Macon
and intermediate points.
The convenience may be added to if the
long distance can arrange with the local
company in using their lines, so that the
connections can be had direct with all
subscribers here without going to the Cen
tral office of the long distance company.
■Nothing in this direction has been under
taken yet, and probaly will not be for
