NEGRO SOLDIERS
WANTTO FIGHT
Military Organizations and
Georgia Will Furnish
Manv Recruits.
75 PER CENT TO GO.
Recruiting Stations Will be Estab-
lished in All Cities -Roster of
Georgia Negro Companies,
It. i« thought that when the government
begins to < nlist negroes for the negro reg
iment which is to be formed for the volun
teer army a heavy draught will be made
on the military negroes of Georgia. In this
respect Georgia can furnish a number of
companies, and has three battalions out
of which more than 75 per cent of the
negroes will go, they say.
Georgia also has the only negro artillery
company in the- United States and this or
ganization will volunteer to go the front.
The negroes will go under any circum
-lances. it is said, hut would prefer to go
with their present officers.
Georgia has also a colored troop of
cavalry which will volunteer. With these
military organizations the state will be
expected to furnish th, largest quota to
the regiment about to the formed and will
be able to supply some well drilled sol
diers who can stand the climate of Cuba.
The adaptability of the negro to live in
a low, hot country, such as the army will
encounter during an invasion of Cuba,
makes a regiment of these people desir
able, say the army officers. Recruiting
offices will be establish.,! in every city in
the state, as well as in the cities of other
states in the South and only a short-time
will be r.quired to enlist a sufficient num
ber of negroes to form the regiment.
In Macon a large number of them, and
especially those who are members of mili
taiy companies, are anxious to get off to
tlie front and it is said no trouble will be
occasioned to get them to enlist. Little
time will be required to make them well
disciplined and trained soldiers.
There arc twenty infantry companies of
negro volunteers in Georgia, beside one
troop of cavalry and the only' organized
colored battery of artillery in the United
States.
Col E. H. Crumbley, of Atlanta, who is
in charge of the Second battalion, says
that fully 75 per cent of the men are will
ing, if not anxious to volunteer their ser
vices to the government.
“At a battalion meeting some time ago,”
he said, “1 took occasion to question the
men and found that fully 75 per cent of
til, tn are willing to go to the front. They
would prefer to go as company' organiza
tions, under their present officers, but I
feel certain that a.majority of them would
go under any' circumstances, provided they
were given the chance. We are not as well
equipped as the white troops, but a little
field service would put us in very good
condition.
“iAs to imniunes, I don’t iknow how many
of our men have been exposed to the yel
low fever, hut we can stand the climate
of Cuba better than any' one else. The
majority of colored soldiers in Georgia
comes from Savannah and are already par
ttally acclimated.”
Colonel iCruinbley has the distinction of
being the Only officer in the colored volun
l, < es who has served in the United Slates
army. He was a member of conpany' I.
T, nth cavalry, from November, 1876. to
Novcmbet, 1881. and had attained the rank
of sergeant major when he was discharged.
\t that time he was as high as any negro
had risen in the United States army ex
cept one. Lieutenant til. O. Flipper, who
was a graduate of West Point, class, of
1876, ami was second lieutenant in tin?
Tenth cavalry.
The complete roster of the colored com
panies in Georgia Is us follows:

Discovered by a Woman.
Another great discovery has been made
and that, too, by a lady in this country.
“Disease fastened its clutches upon her
and for seven years he withstood its se
verest tests, but her vital organs were
undermined and her death seemed immi
nent. For three mouths she coughed in
cessantly and could not sleep. She finally
discovered away to recovery by purchas
ing of us a bottle of Dr. King’s New Dis
covery for Consumption, and was so much
relieved on taking the first dose that she
slept all night and with two bottles has
been absolutely cured. Her name is Mrs.
Luther Lutz.” Thus writes Mr. W. C.

The Fitzgerald Post of the G. A. R. has
added considerably to the force of white
people who attend the Decoration Day ex
ercises. and this year the Fitzgerald peo
ple have added a feature to the program
that will be of interest.
The post has or will present a flag and a

and the presentation of this flag will be a
neat feature of the day.

ABOUT TICKETS.
The State Committee May Take Action in
This Matter.
When the nxet state campaign comes on
the state (Democratic executive committee
will be asked to prescribe a form for the
tickets to he used in the (primaries.
It. may be that the state convention next
month will take up the matter and au
thorize the executive committee to control
the printing and distribution of tickets.
This would simplify the business for the
<an■ iida tes and lesson the cost to every one
c.f them.
Tlu ie will be confusion in a number of
counties this year because they are run
ning local tickets at the gubernatorial pri
mary. Candidates for slate house offices
have had trouble getting the names of all
the local candidates and in some instances
is lias been impossible to have tickets
printed with the names of the county can
didates on them.
Every 'candidate for a state house office
has had his own tickets printed, from
00.000 to 150,000 ea'ch. Between 1,000,000
and 2,000,000 tickets are now being dis
tributed over the state. 'Where there are
two or more candidates for the same office,
as for instance, the secretary of state,
neither candidate prints the name of the
other candidates on his tickets. They will
probably have the names of all the other
candidates on the tickest, but not the
name of the opponent.
The cost of printing the tickets is not
a large item in the campaign expenses of
a candidate, but if one uniform ticket was
printed by 7 direction of the state executive
'committee the assessment on each candi
date would be trifling.
A candidate who has a strong organiza
tion all over the state has an advantage
under the present arrangement over the
■andiil.rte whose friends are not so well
organized.
Phe weaker candidates would like to
feel assured that their names are on all
I lie ticki ts which are distributed. The
one day primary 7 was a long step in the
right direction and there are candidates
today who wish the executive committee
had required the names of all candidates
to be on every ticket.

Rag Offerings.
The sinpnlar custom of leaving rags
ami other xvortbitsj objects at wells
ba: not entirely lallen into disuse. The
BUparbtitiou in u modihcd form exists
in other portions of the world. A trav
eler in Persia found a tree with rags

th« te By the inhabitants of a province
infected with ague- A tree hung with
rags was found by another traveler in
Africa Crooked pins, old clothes, peb
bles. sheik, rusty nails, small coins,
and even Lundies of heath were consid
ered appropriate thank offerings at
shrines in earlier days, for it was be
lieved that the saints and apostles did
Dot care for articles of value.
Such was the superstitious adoration
of fountains that it was forbidden by
the sixteenth of the canons issued in
960, in the reign of King Edgar, and it
was condemned by the canons of St
Ansi Im It was also interdict! dby laws
passed in the reign of King Canute.
Since the reformation the practice has
not been pr. valent, except in Ireland,
where many old wt Ils consecrated to
saints and martyrs are yet made places
of pilgrimage. There is scarcely a parish
throughout the land that has not its
own In ly well where, despite practical
admonition, the faithful and the faith
less come to pray for physical or mental
relief and leave behind them a scrap of
rag as an offering.—Godey’s Magazine.
