Good adv, rti.-ini' cannot be called an (xpiu.-i . loi- it i- only* an investment, just a.- you pI.H e your money in a glove stock, or a line of furnit kings, and you get your nionej out of it Just as surely, and with possibly .i letter margin on the invest nient, than mil of Hie other line of mer chandise. Good advertising brings you only pleasing results, for in addition to immediate results in the way of sales, it builds up a strong feeling of confidence, ami it give your store a forward move ment on Hie road to prosperity and per mant nt success that it would otherwise require a span of years covering the ordi nary life, it simplifies your efforts —-it ac compli h<s for you at moderate cost what would requiri y< ars of effort and ceaseless toil to accomplish. This is a matter worth thinking over during times like the present. .And it is equally important that you consider the value of the mediums offered you. If you are mainly aft., .. few customers in some remote Georgia town, The News will not be of much help to you. But if you want to reach the people in the nearby towns — tin people who really do their trading in Macon -The News is the best traveling salesman that you can send (after this bus iness. It will reach more people at less cost to yuo than any other salesman you san use. If yon and this is the trade, after all, that our merchants depend on most large ly- wiant to reach the home-folks, the peo ple in (Macon and suburbs; if you want to get into the homes, to talk bargains to the wife, the daughters, the sons and fathers, and that, too, at a time when they have the time and inclination to listen to you, then The News is of more value to you than i.iny oilier medium. Fur the wimple r< son that it reaches the greatest number of tin sc readers and that too of all class es. This is the sort of investment you make when you spend your money for space in The News. It will be recalled that when the presi dent refund to recognize their government the Cuban Junta plainly stated that they would fight the American as well as the Spanish troops if we entered (’Uba without recognizing Cuba Libre. It is now a vexed question, observes the New Orleans States, whether there ever existed an insurgent “army” at all or whether they have dis appeared as suddenly ami mysteriously A Clan Alpine vanished from Fitz James’ view on the mountain side. Sheep for Georgia. In Georgia, according to an investigation made by the secretary of agriculture of that slate, there is a natural pasturage foe 6,000,000 in territory where no artificial shelter and no storage of winter fodder are necessary. Commenting upon this the Wool Record says: ‘‘The soil, the water, the almost endless sunshine from season to season in these Georgian highlands, and above all things, the wonderful bennuda grass, which sup plies an unfailing food supply from Jan uary 1 to December 31 for wool bearing an imals. should make this region the home of perhaps the largest sheep-growing in terests on the whole American continents All the elements have here combined to invite the industry of wool culture, and a curtailment of the cotton crop, such as is now favored by the capitalized supporters of that staple, should, wthin a very short time, result in the stocking of these Georgia ranges with innumerable flocks of sheep." A couple of Salvation Army girls be thought themselves a few days ago to. raise Omaha's artistic taste with an- ax and succeeded in demolishing the statues of Cupid which ornamtned the fine arts building at the Trans Mississippi Exposi tion They are now in the lock-up. whore ample opportunity will be given them to reflect upon their action. Spain's Plans of War. The belief seems to be general that it is Spain’s-int. ntion to prolong the war with out meeting the forces or fleets of the United States in decisive ‘battle. Spain is to tight in her usual manner—striking here and there, destroying property and lives, am! hoping and intriguing for intervention on the part of the powers. It is pointed out that when Minister Polo was civen his passports he established himself m Canada and at once inaugurated a spy system which is now being carried on in all parts of the country. It is claim ed before Polo left for Spain he declared it wtis his country’s intention to prolong the war until fall, that hy doing so much American property would be destroyed and Spain vould avoid any great battles; that the summer's war would cost the United States J “c0.0p0.000 an d n s pa j n would be cont. nt to give up Cuba and end the "ar, jf still unt'ihle to receive the inter vention of Europe. Or. Gltling, the inventer of the gun bearing his name, and who. by the way is a North Carolinian, was an inventor before he was a doctor. A fearful expe rience through which he went caused him to stmjy medicine, in 1846. while on his way from Pittsburg to Cincinnati he con tracted smallpox. and to add to his suf fering, the boat on which he was traveling was frozen in the ice for thirteen days, and during that time he lay sick upon the boat without medical attention. He after ward studied medicine and got his diplo ma but although called “doctor.”* what refutation he has is not connected with the are of healing. A little more than two years ago the United States came near going to war with its best friend. Great Britain, because the latter was about to annex a few acres of Venezuela s land. Today the Venezuelans are openly sympathizing with Spain and manifesting their hostility to the United States. Now for Business. Today's dispatches prove conclusively that Cerv.*xa’s fleet is bottled up in Sian- I tiago harbor, with Schley watching the ' bole. The government has been waiting for positive information on this point, ' hence the seeming inactivity in that quar ter. Now, however, that the government is in possession of positive knowledge as to Cervera, it may be expected that a i military expedition will be dispatched to ; Santiago at once so as to imprison Cervera between the land and sea forces of the ; United States, and thereby make his cap- i ture not only certain, but attended with i as little loss of life as possible. A movement on Santiago would mean a subsequent movement on Havana, or, in other words, invasion of Cuba at or near the former port with Havana as the ulti mate destination of our army. If success ful in these movt ments, as we should (be, the result may be a speedy termination of the war. In either event, we may reasonably ex pect this government’s plans to shape very rapidly, now that Cervera has been posi tively located. Unless the Spanish admiral prefers to commit suicide, • and sacrifice his fleet in one supreme effort against Schley he will be likely to remain at Santiago until our army of invasion can surround and help to capture him. What ever may be his plan of action, the result will, most probably, be all the same to the United States. Another victory is almost in sight. The only point in doubt is whether Cervera will choose to be cap tured or annihilated. The following from Father McKinnon, of San Francisco, breathes a spirit of pa triotism that undoubtedly animates the Catholic church of this country “In every country patriotism is a sacred duty of every citizen. In America it is a duty thrice sacred; it is a solemn duty of con science, a solemn duty to God. Religion and patriotism are one and inseparable. It is impossible for one to exist without the other. The church has no civil or polit ical authority, power, jurisdictloon or pre eminence whatever in these United States, and never claimed to have any. In tem poral matters American Catholics recog nize no power as sovereign but the consti tution of the United Stages ami their reli gious principles render them but more re solved to discharge their duties as citi zens.” Says the Sparta Ishrnaelite: “O. B. Stevens, of Terrell, is a candidate for Commissioner of Agriculture against the present incumbent, who has been eight years in the office. While the Ishrnaelite is making no fight »n Nesbitt it thinks that 'there ought to boa change, and so it is for Stevens.” In an article on the subject of the 10,000 immune* called into service the Philadel phia Record protests against that clause of the bill which provides for the appoint ment by the president of the 450 or 500 officers of the forces, which is certain to degenerate into a political “pull.” Unless your name has been placed on the registration books since January 1, of the present year, you will not be allowed to vote in the June primary. Attend to this matter at once. An exchange rises to remark that if Admiral 'Dewey could see some of the “poetry” which has written on him. he would be extremely chLiry about winning another victory. Statistics show that there are 91,225 pro fessions! beggars in Spain, of which 39,279 are males and 51,946 are females. The total population is in round numbers 18,- 009,000. “Now let us have some protests from the Shah of Persia and the Khan of Beer.” suggests the Memphis Commercial-Appeal. You must register before the night of 'June 3. Last year’s registration will not answer for the gubernatorial primary. If Schley hao idorvora ha:tl.>3 up in San tiago he should send for Dewey. The lat ter would soon make a clean job of it. Regiser at once. Last year’s registra tion does not qualify you for participation in the June primary. Shoot, Schley, or give up your gun. A Won of Bruins. From the Jasper County' News. When Mr. Stevens, during the early part of the year, yielded to the importunate so licitation of friends, and made his modest but trenchant announcement for the office of secretary of agriculture, there were many who were confident of the successful issue of his campaign. Later develop ments have put the seal of verity on the predictions. Mr. Nesbitt stands for re-election, but the people generally object to life tenures in office, think that, for the ordinary man, eight years in office are sufficient to vi tiate one’s usefulness. We do not speak of other and possibly more persuasive ob jections to Mr. Nesbitt’s retention. (Mr. •Stevens is a man of brains, cutlure and swavity of manner, ever adding to his large catalogue of friends. The knowing ones forecast for him an overwhelming majority’. A Texas Wonder. Mr. Arthur Wood Presided at Organ in First Presbyterian Church. Yesterday was the last Sunday on which Mr. Arthur Wood will act as organist at the First Presbyterian church and a spe cial program had been prepared for the oc casion. The resignation of Mr. Wood will be a great loss to the church, and the deepest regret is expressed by the congre gation. His nesignation is regarded in the light of a victory by those *who regard themselves as the most orthodox and are certainly the most old-fashioned of the Prebyterians and who were of the opinion that Mr. Wood’s music was too sparkling for a sober congregation. It is a fact, how ever that the loss to the church will be very great, as the music has been a strong feature of the services for many years.
