HAS COAL AND KRUPPS
Channel Has Been Narrowed to 100 Feet I
and Mined.
.New York, May 31. —The Hamburg-
American line steamer Folaria, Captain i
Si haarmschmidt, which left Santiago de I
Cuba on May 13, got in here yesterday j
from Key West. Captain Schaarschmidt
•told a Sun reporter of some things he saw
ami heard at Santiago de Cuba. When the
•I‘olaria arrived there, he said, there was
no sign of the Cape Verde fleet, but no one I
in tbv town made any bones of saying the
fleet was i xpe. ted any day. The only Span- I
is.h waiships about were two small gun
boats. The people of Santiago were in a
v-ry complacent state of mind about th,
war. When any one to a Span
iard of that city that the forts might be
shelled by American warships at any time
the almost invariable answer was:
"We are not concerned about the possi
ble attacks upon us by Yankee ships. Let
them come it they wish. As many as come
if they come near enough to do any dam
age, will be blown into smithereen. The
entrance to the harbor is narrow an every
foot of the channel Is mined. Besides the
entrance is defended from either shore by
fine new guns. The Yankees eoudn’t take
this town by bombardment in a thousand
years.”
Captain Schaarschmidt on his own account
said that the entrance to the harbor, nar
row at all times, had been made narrower
by obstructions in the channel, so that
now the safe channel is only about ten
feet wide. He said that new Krupp guns
were being mounted on either side of the
entrance to the harbor w-hen he came
away, and that he knew that the whole
channel had been carefully mined.
The captain said that there was no lack |
of food sup Hes in Santiago. The city, is.
however, effectively cut off from the inte
rior by insurgents. Nobody thought of go
ing outside the city limits on the land
side. The insurgents were so near that
the light of their camp fires could be seen
11 oiti the city at night The Spanish in
the city were In much greater fear from an
attack by the insurgents than of an attack
by the American fleet..
Asked about the supply of coal in Sariti-t
ago and if he though there was enough in
the city to supply the bunkers of the Span
ish fleet, Captam Schaarschmidt said he
had been told there were about 5,000 tons
t tore. Ihe Spanish warships supposed to
be at Santiago are the armored cruisers
Vlscaya, Almirante, Oquendo, Cristobal,
Colon, and Infanta (Maria Teresa, and the
torpedo boat destroyers Furor and Pluton.
Five thousand tons would coal them all up
with coal to spare.

MODEL LOCOMOTIVES.
The Baltimore & Ohio’s Locomotives are the
Highest Types of Excellence.
Not a great while ago the general super
intendent of motive power of one of the
largest railroad systems in the Northern
part of the country happened to visit Bal
timore. Being of a courteous disposition
he called on the 'Baltimore and Ohio mo
tive power officials to pay his respects and
he was given an opportunity to see the
new locomotives that have been purchased
during the past two years. He devoted a
great deal of his time to an inspection of
the monster ten wheel passenger engim ■
that are used between Philadelphia and
Washington on the €O-mile an hour Royal
Blue trains. When he was ready to depart
he turend to one of the company’s officers
and remarked:
"I have always been of the opinion that
there was nothing on the Baltimore and
Ohio railroad that was worth patterning
after, but I am very frank to say that I
have seen today the most advanced types
of locomctives in the country. I know of
no railroad in the country whose motive
powet is equal to yours.”
Within a month after his visit to Balti
more this official ordered a number of
locomotives, only stipulating that they
should be built after the plans of the Bal
timore and Ohio engines.

Derivation of Settle.
An amusing instance of irresponsible
derivation is given in the “Dictionary of
Architecture,” published under the aus
pices of the Architectural Publication so
ciety, under the head of “Settle,” which
is stated to be "perhaps derived from ‘seat
all people,” ex temp. Henry VIII, at the
Green Dragon public house, Combe St.
Nicholas, Somersetshire,” and “settee,”
which Professor Skeat calls “an arbitrary
variation of settle,” is defined to be a
stone bench, the word being actually de
rived from the Anglo-Saxon setl, a seat.—
