LEGISLATIVE
RACE IS CLOSE.
Ellis is in the Lead and Hall
Will Make Him a Good
Second.
The election is going off in Bibb county
as smoothly as a well run machine. There
is not a crowd or a fuss anywhere, and the
voters are not slow about coming forward
either "* !>•-*- »-» -.
l r P to 2 o'clock something like 1,4 W votes
Jiad been cast.
Roland Ellis is well in the lead for the
legislature and all the. interest centers in
the legislative race.
In nearly every precinct Ellis has taken
Jhe lead, and how the others are coming
put it would take a fortune to tell or a me
dium jo say.
As c sM r | hppse at 2 p'clocjc between
six and seven hundreds votes had ijeeij
cast. Elks has received nearly all of these
vqtes and 'Reid is coming up clpse tp him
wish Hall pushing him hard.
’fhat is the eertnjate for the caurt house,
Wild after all Ji will 'be the court house
that will tell the tale, though Cooper has
had a very nice vote at the court house,
and it is probable that he may make up for
it somewhere else, at the Godfrey, for in
stance, or In East Macon, at both of which
places places he has received a very nice
vote.
Tite report from .the court house shows
that Ellis , Hall and Reid are about the
Order of things there.
East Macon shows Ellis, Cooper and
Reid, with 140 votes cast and about 100
more to come.
In the Godfrey district 100 votes had
been cast at 2:30, with another hundred
to be cast. The evidence is that Hall is in
the lead. Ho is running like a scared rab
bit and lias polled nearly every vote that
has been cast. Cooper Is a good second,
and Reid seems to be coming in a good
third. But here to -Ellis seems to be pick
ing up and will do well before the' day is
out.
At Findlay’s foundry at 2 o’clock 250
votes had been cast.
Ellis’ friends claim that he is in the lead
there, but others say that Craig has taken
the lead and that he will get a vote at
that place sufficient to make up his elec
tion strength counted with the good stiff
vote that he will get at all the country
precincts.
Advices from Skippertown are t'o the ef
fect that Ellis has a good start there and
that Craig follows him closely.
At Manchester Ellis is in the lead with
Reid and Craig and Cooper running in the
bunch.
At all the precincts Lane is getting, a
very comfortable vote, and it is not at all
improbable that he may find a place among
those who are so close together.
The indications are that the vote will be
one of the closest that has ever been poll
ed 1 nthis county in a legislative race, and
that it will take close figuring to pull
some of the candidates in.
OREGON DID.NOT

False Report Sent Out Em

the Flagship.
Mole, St. Nicholas., June 5. —Advices re
ceived here today from the Flagship New
York, off Santiago, and forwarded at 4
o’clock on Sunday afternoon, say that there
is no truth in tlje report from Port Anto
nio that the Spanish torpedo boat destroyer
Terror had been sunk by the Oregon.
It is also reported from the flagship that
no further news has been received from the
Merrimac prisoners.
A launch came ou from shore Sunday
morning under a Hag of truce, and the
Spanish officer who was in charge said
that he thought he saw a flag of truce
flying on Ixiard the lowa.
When the officer discovered his mistake
the launch returned to Morro castle.
The United States transport, Resolute,
has arrived off Santiago with apprentices

The United Staes dispatch boat Suwa

TO EXBHANGE.
Arrangements Being Made to Get the Heroes
Back Again.
Washington. June 6—The war depart
ment has supplied to the navy a list of
names procured from the commandant at
Fort McPherson of tile Spanish prisoners
of war there.
The department this morning sent this
list to Sampson and the admiral himself
will enter fnto communication with Cer
vera respecting an exchange of prisoners.
Cervera will be allowed to select from
the list the persons whom he will take in
exchange for Naval Constructor Hobson
and the gallant crew that manned the
.Merrimac on her last run.
Hobson’s rank as relative is that of
lieutenant of the junior grade and he
stands at the head of that grade and in
the corps.
By the ordinary rules of exchange he
wood be about equivalent to a captain in
th 1 army, the highest grade officer among
rhe Spanish cartivee at McPherso i is a
hist lieutenant. So in order to equalize
ttte exchange it may be necessary for
Sampson to throw ip with the first lieu
tenant ope of the dozen second lieu tenures
among the prisoners.
Hobson’s crew, pope being of cotumia-,
i toned grade, be exchanged man fpr
matt for six Spanish private soldiers
among the prisoners of war.
. When Sampson and Cervera have ar
ranged the details the list of prisoners to
be exchanged will be submitted to the war
department which would direct the com
mandant at McPherson to send the men to
the front. . - - -
UNITED STATES COURT
Case pt the Nations! Bank Against Colqu
hoyn Bone Over.
In the United States court this morning
the case of the American National Bapk
against Colquhoun. being a suit for the
foreclosure of a mortgage, was continued
indeffinitely, as the bank was not ready
for the hearing of the case.
The suit is being defended by Nf.
qtthoun, who Is the defendant in the case,’
and ts the fatuous 'English exploser an.j
who came to Georgia some
few years agp an'd purchased about three
thousand acres o nthe Mgcoq and Dublin
road,
He paid for all the property except a
small slip which he claims the parties who
sold to him had not good title in and could
not make deeds.
The American National Bank in some
way got hold of the property and entered
suit for the foreclosure. - - *
Mr. Colquhoun had already paid some
thing like SI.SOO for the property. It had
been his intention to colonize the tract,
bu. he gave up the idea during his absence
in England, and transferred the property
to his sister. Mrs. Ross, of Atlanta.

THE MACON NEWS.
WILL ATTACK
DURJEABOARD
That is the Plan of the Second
Spanish Fleet Headed
This Wav.
HU I WTOfDI
Has Been Fortified and the Zone lof
Cultivation Has Been Increased
Considerably.
Havana, via Vera Cruz. Mexico, May 30.
—That news has arrived at Santiago of
what is known here as the first division
of the Spanish fleet, has considerably
lightened the hearts of Spaniards and the
news has been received with great rejoic
ing-
The feeling of satisfaction is all the more
intense as it is hoped the Spanish war
ships will soon enter the harbor of Hava-,
na, after which, uniting with the Second
division under Camara, it is believed the
naval forces of Spain will attempt to strike
a decisive blow at some part of the United
States. At least this is the veiw of the
situation taken by the Spanish authorities
here. Havana an'd the rest of the island,
so far heard from officially, are pronounc
ed to be ntirly quiet. The Spanish of
ficials here claim -that if 50,000 men were
needed to attack Havana by land and bv
sea when the war broke out, at least 100,000
men will be need to atack the Caban capi
tal now, in view of the new strengthened
fortifications, and because the so-called
cultivation zone has been extended, thus,
it is claimed, making Havana a Spanish
Sebastopol. This increase in the cultivated
area about Havana, will, it is asserted,
support the inhabitants with food a long
time.
In spite of this outwardly cheerful aspect
of affairs, anxious feelings exist The peo
ple go so far as to charge Senor iMoret,
the Spanish minister of colonies, with
“having sold Cuba to the United States.”
This causes discontent, and if the Spanish
fleet does not arrive here before food be
comes really scarce, rioting may be expec
ted. There is hardly any business transac
ted and .the city looks deserted, there being
few people on the streets. People remain
ht home excepting when the sound of a
gn fired from one of the forts cuases the.
people to rush to the windows or into the
streets, and if several shots are fired
thousands of people rush to the wharves to
see if the American fleet is approaching.
Railroad communication between the Prov
ince of Santa Clara and trains are some
twenty-four hours overdue on account of
blowing up of .culverts by the insurgents.
The damage, however, is soon - repaired.
This happened even in the province of
Havana. Twice, within the last ten days,
culverts have been destroyed with dyna
mite, anti in one case only six miles from
Havana.
NOT BELIEVED
IN WASHINGTON.
They Say There That the
Theorv Is Impossible, But
Is Part of Future Plans.
Washington, June 6—Naval officers
shook their heads in negation this morn -
ing at the stories being circulated to tho
effect that troops have been lan led in
force at Santiago.
They ire so confident that the reports
are too premature to warrant the belief
that from their knowledge of the move
ment of the transports at Tampa an;! Mo
bile it is not possible for t'he troops’ ships
to have arrived by this "time on the south
coast of Cuba.
'The Resolute, reported yesterday as
having been at St. Nicholas Mole, Hayti,
for a brief space of time is pot a troap
ship in the strict sense of the term.
She is a large transport and has on board
tne SOO marines taken to Key West on the
Panther.
After lyin F in harbor for several weeks
suffering firm close confinement on board
the ship men were landed and went into
camp near Tampa, where they were thor
oughly drilled.
The Resolute nicked them up about a
week ago and started for Admiral Samp
son’s fleet.
Marines are not to be used as at first
supposed on board the fighting ships of
the fleet but were intended to constitute
a landing force to support the fleet in an
attack upon any fortified point where it
decided to capture and occupy.
Now the plan of campaign against San
tiago is understood to contemplate the co
aperatiop between the fleet under Samp
sou and the United States troops under
General Shafter. It is believed that to
prevent confusion in the direction of the
forces ashore marine detachment com
manded by Lieutenant Colonel Hunting
ton will be placed under orders of General
•Shafter to act as part.of the ferula-* Army
for the time being.

NEGRO LABOR.
Removal of United States Engineer at New
Orleans Asked.
New Orleans, June s.—The employment
of negro labor on Forts Jackson and St.
Phillips, twenty miles down the Mississippi
river, promises interesting developments:
Major Quinn, Uhited States Engineer for
this district, at first listened to Demas, it
is alleged, and discharged the white la
borers and sent down 350 negrq.es, (because
Demas claimed that the negroes has been
diserimnated against in the matter. Then
it was found that the negroes were incom
petent to carry on the work.
In the meantime there Mid been a strike
among the white men remaining at the
forts. Yesterday in the Louisiana legisla
ture Senator St. -Paul introduced.a resolu
tion that the Louisiana representatives in
Washington be urged to secure the trans
fer of Major Quinn from the station in
charge of the (.Mississippi- river defense.
The resolution has created a great sensa

PEACE IS WHAT
SPAIN WANTS
And She is Willing io Fake It
at Almost Any Kind
of Price.
CUT TINO MIfIIATDR.
None of the Powers Are Inclined to
Take the Part of Spain
at Present.
■Washington,June 6.—The belief is grow
ing in tlie best informed government cir
cles that Spain is sincerely anxious to
make peace, and even now she is seeking
a favot-alole opportunity to make overtures
in that direction.
Numerous evidences of this have come
to the administration, but wp to now no
actual move has been made towards as
certaining on 'what basis the United
'States would consider peace.
It is said the first step will be towards
having some disinterested power make in
quiries of this government as to what
terms will be accepted, after which terms
oeing -stated it would be for Spain to
form a commission and make a formal
tender of peace.
The authorities feel that Spain is feel
ing her way towards movements of this
kind. One evidence of it is the utterance
of its Spanish ambassador at London,
urging that peace movement.
It is thought to be higL.y iniprobalole
that a Spanish officer of his rank would
make a statement 01 this kind unless it
voiced the view entertained by the au
thorities at Madrid.
Another evidence is the sending of
Senor Castillo to Paris, his principal .mis
sion being to enlist sympathy there, and
to . encourage a movement towards se
curing peace on a basis honorable to
Spain.
With this comes the report of the seri
ous embarrassment of the Bank of Spain
ou which the government relies for funds.
The d< ipeiate condition of ’the Spanish
forces at Manila and Havana are looked
upon as added reasons why Spain should
be solici tious for pt ace. “
But while Spain is thought to be anxious
to secure pqgee she apears to be unable
to secure the services, of a disinterested
power to take the initiative in a peace
movemeni.
This was the opinion expressed today
by a leading member of the diplomatic
coups.
It is said much surprise has been caused
at the foreign capitals by the resentment
in the United States against the kindly
representations the great powers made to
McKinley some weeks a'go which has
been treated by the American press and
public opinion throughout the United
States as an intrusion on the part of the
present great powers.
For that reason the efforts since made
by Spain to induce the European powers
tc intervene have met with flat failure
because'none of the powers wish to arouse
the enmity of the United States.
For this reason this diplomat pointed
out that the European powers are loth to
befriend Spain at the (present time even
to the extent of making inquiry as to
what basis of peace will be acceptable to
the United States.
No one power would undertake such in
quiry he said, as it would subject that
power to being positively insulted. He
thought that su'ch a snub would quite
likely, in view of the manner in which the
kindly representations of powers have
'been received some weeks ago, and while
a power willing to act alone neither
could the powers be brought together for
united action along that line.
For this reason it is pointed out that
Spain’s isolation at the present time.made
it extremely difficult for her to secure any
intermediary by which she could .conduct
the initial steps towards securing peace.

Chickamauga Park, Ga., June s.—There
are now 42.000 soldiers-encamped at Chick

Saturday was another hot. dusty day at the

striking events to vary the monotony of
routine. So far ah is known at present
(there are no other troops to leave the
