The early <tpp< ur.tnce of yellow fever in tliv .'>t:iie <>! :>ii i> ippi would indicate ihai Un (ii.-q.iM n.i. not been completely biumpeil out <>i thin country since ns ravage.-’, of last year. \ mild winter lias aliened olio ol the gi run to lie dormant only and a gn at danger tlrreatens me Eolith. Ine advice oiu red by Tne News yesterday ami the prediction that tne dis ease would ntaki its app< arunce an the Mouth dining the present summer was wriiun Indore the press dispaieltes mak ing the annoum etui ul that the plague had he. n discovered at McHenry reached this oil ice. riiosc who understand anything about yellow lever were aware of I lie danger and view the situation with no little alarm. only the most strict quarantine oi all in fected pmiits will prevent .i very disastrous situation and it is as well to look the matter squarely in the face. The fever is probably m the South to stay for tne Minium r and its presence will create a feeling or uneasiness, lint the fears of every rommunity can be very greatly re duced by attention to the sanitary ar -1 augi nn uts of the town as and the knowl edge on the part of the people that they are surrounded iby conditions that are to the smallest extent conducive to the spread of any kind ol lever. It is thin the duly of the administration of tins vity to take such steps ms will be mo l likely to produce a feeling of conti dence. The knowledge that we lire eur rounded by the best sanitary conditions and that the authorities are doing every thing in their power to protect the people from siekm ss that may be produced from local cause-: or fostered by them will do more good for Macon than anything that can now he done by the authorities. We do not think that yellow fever is at nil likely to come to .Maron. If it should come we do not think that it would spread and tlie chances in this direction will be very greatly minimized by a thorough overhauling of the city -by the sanitary department and the Hoard of Health. As we said yestereday it is the duty of each and every citizen to see to it that Hie department ha every assistance in his or her power. Nothing can lie effectively done-by the authorities without this co operation on Hie part of the people as responsible individuals. Those who do not or will sot realize their responsibility in this direction should lie made to do so. If the sanitary department and the liealth board make a few examples of those who do not understand or will not understand that the lives and property of their neighbors are dependent upon their observance of the laws of sanitation, great er attention will be paid to those Jaws by everyone. \\ e cannot begin our spring cleaning too soon for the good of the city. Just at this time the extra money spent on sanitation and a general cleaning cam paign may save hundreds of thousands of dollars later on and will strengthen Ma con’s reputation abroad. Let us have a clean city. It is not enough to say that it is clean, lot us see it and let us smell it as wo go along and there will be no chance for the calamity howler. Macon is just at this time making an effort to secure the selection of this point as a camp tor <onie of the volunteer forces. The opportunity is better now than it has ever been before as it is more than prob able that all of the troops will be moved out of Florida and that they will be scat tered at points where there is the least chance of fever and epidemic in other Southern states. Macon is one of those points, and if the city authorities evidence their lietermination to take every precau tion against sickeness from local causes the people who have the selection of the camps will be more likely to look with favor on this city. Soldier's Relief Fund. The Soldier s Relief Association should have the support of the whole people of Macon. Me have sent away a large number of young men who are unused to the great hardships of camp life and who will ap preciate more than most people under a kindly interest taken in their welfare by d home association. Only those who have been through it can understand the hardships of the life to which these young men have voluntarily gone. They went as patriots and they rtpti -ent the people of this community, ej are not at all likely to grumble or complain. That would be the part of poor soldiers. They accept the hardships that th<y are called upon to stand without a murmur, hut that does not alter the fact that they are undergoing hardships. It ;s a fact for instance, that none of the soldiers at Camp Northen have been paid off and wliile there are some more fortu nate than others th,re are mauy who are -without money to purchase any of the lit tle comforts to Which they have been used It would be a small thing tor the May at-homes to do if they gave a small amount each month or each week for a fund out of which these little comforts can be purchased. Macon is proud of the sol diers she has sent to Camp Northen, but she should do more than talk about the good spirit that has been shown by the young men who went out to swell the quota required from this state by the nat ional government. We must evidence our appreciation of the patriotism that has be. n displayed and we cannot afford 'to nave these boys coming home and saying that the people of their city forgot them altogether while they were aw ly . Every man in Macon should be a mem ber of the Relief Association and every man in Macon should contribute bis share towards the relief fund. A Great Alliance. The talk of the Anglo-American Alli ance is destined to become somtehing more than mere talk in the near future. It is now the toast at banquets on the other side of the water and having reached this stage it will probably become something more solid than a champagne toast in the near future. It would see tn to one who looks at the question of an alliance of these two great English-speaking nations tbit it is an in- | evitable entry among the records to be- j wrrw-n in the future pages of internation al history. There is more behind the movement now liiui nt. It would by a good busi- ness policy for Ei.gland and this country can have no objection to an alliance that must meet the approval of a great ma jority of its people. The chances of war with England have been growing less and less for many years until now such a thing is almost one of the impossibles. On the other hand the announcement to the world that these two countries have determined to stand toge ther representing all that is best in civilization would in evitably have the effect of putting any serious European disturbance out of the question. England is the- mother country. Our citi zens are related the people of England by blooel and the relationship is growing stronger every day as the flood of immi gration and emigration continues. Com mercially the interests of the one are the interests of the other ar>4 joined for th* purpose of furthering the interests of civi lization, by force if need be on land or on the sea, the two countries would be in vincible. The people of this country will hail with joy the day that marks the signing of an alliance and the Anglo-Saxon jh ople all over the world will feel that civilization has taken a huge stride onward and has surmounted at once most of the obstacles that lie in the way of complete "peace on earth and good will among men." Macon's Opportunity. While the chances have always been good that if any other point in this state was to ibe chosen for the assembling or camping of the volunteer forces Macon would be selected, those chances have been greatly increased by the outbreak of yellow fever at '.McHenry. We lielieve that the troops will be moved from Tampa as soon as possible. There s danger of the fever there, and should it once break out in the camp it is terrible to contemplate the ravages that it might cause among thousands of utterly unac climated men, The troops will be moved to some other point and 'Macon with her magnificent health record is sure to at tract the attention of the authorites. It would be a proper thing now to make an organized effort to place these advant ages of Macon before the department at Washington. This can best be done through our representatives in Washing ton. It is true they have been at work on this line, but now- is the time for action and it is foolish to go about it in secret. The effort to secure troops for Macon has been going on for some time, but not much has been said about it because it was thought that every other place would at once begin to make the same effort. But as a mater of fact every other place that had any advantages to offer has been mak ing the effort for the same length of time, and the situation now is just what it al ways was that the department will select that point or points best suited for the camps. We do not believe that there is a point in the South that can offer greater inducements than can IMacon, and we be lieve that a determined effort at this time will secure some of the troops. If the city council, chamber of commerce and our representatives—Senator Bacon and Congressman Bartlett—will go to work in earnest and with a vim Macon will win out. , How to Increase Business, The growth in the circulation of the Macon News since the outbreak of the war has been phenomenal. It is steadily in oraaains Wh locallv and within a raAtua of fifty miles of IMacon. Within the territory covered by The News and in which it claims circulation it has a much larger circulation than any paper published in Macon has now or any paper ever published tn Macon has ever had. The News is read in every home in Ma con—that is to say, every home where there are reading people. Within the ter ritory properly claimed by the merchants of 'Macon for their trade The tNews has a splendid and an increasing patronage. The News goes out on all of the after noon trains and is sold in all the surround ing towns long before any other paper gets there. The people understand that they get the war news fresh and crisp in the 'Macon News many hours ahead of any other paper published in Georgia, and they are showing their appreciation of the fact. The wise merchant will take cognizance of this and will place his advertising con tract with The News. An advertisement in The News brings results. Mr. iP. Ketchum of Pike City, Cal., says: "During my brother’s late sickness from sciatic rheumatism Chamberlain’s Pain Balm was the only remedy that gave him any relief.” Many others have testified to the prompt relief from pain which this liniment affords. Bright little bunches of repartee often break the lazy monotony of dry legislative proceedings in the house, and not a few of them originate with Speaker Reed. In fact, repartee seems to roll off the speak er’s illiistrhuts cx[»mse of baldness and disseminate itself over the house even as April raindrops would do likewise with a new tin roof. The other day a yea and nay vote had been taken on some bill or other of compatotivi’ unimportance and the usual recapitulation had been conclud ed when Representative Lorimer arose to expostulate. “Lt appears that I am not recorded,” he complained. ‘ I should be. This sort of thing tickles Reed immensely.
