Th< Pullman Car Company, which is one of the richest corporations in the country, and < njoys in absolute monopoly, is pro testing, violently against the war revenue bill betatise it exacts the sin..l tax of 1 < nt sot each in rlh and, seat sold for the support ot the governtneiM in the present war. The Pullman <kir Company’s complaint Is but h unjust and unpatriotic, correctly observes the Birmingham, News. The in surance companies, the banks, the tobacco dealers, thw express companies, and, in fact, a multitude ot corporations and indi viduals, who are effected by the new Jaw are rai:>m a hown against it. The tax imposed upon the Pullman Car Company is small and the company can easily af ford to pay it. But there is another and more potent reason why the Pullman Car Company’s kick comes with poor grace. tn 1894, wh«n 'Chicago and vicinity were in the hands of a mob of strikers because of the Pullman Car Company's action in reducing wages, and when the property of that and other corporations was threatened with de struction, the president of the 1 United States, seeing the inability or indisposition of the state authorities t« preserve order and protect life and property, called out the United States regulars and turned the v'hicago railroad yards into a military <amp. Th<' Pullman I’ar Company's prop erty was saved and the majesty of the law maintained Fair play demands that the [Pullman Car Company should pay part of the obligation thereby incurred. Havana’s Fortifications. These facts alxrut the fortiticatlous of Havana are gathered from a letter written by an officer of .the Puritan, ou the block ade line: If we ever do have to bombard Havana, it will be no easy matter now to silence the forts. Last Sunday 4 had a good < h inee in ttlie aifternoon during my watch to examine the place through the glasses. We were about eigtit miles ibroaul off the entrance. I counted five forts to the left of the entrance, not counting l.Morro castle, a ring or and ami earthworks behind the town, and four or live heavy butteries, to the westward. Havana has been strongly fortified. Close .along shore, several miles on each side, the 'batteries are (protected by tons a-nd tons of sand, t'he .best protec tion in rhe world. They must have had lb.thio oldiers and workmen throwing up these hills of sand. The guns within them are io. 12'and tfi-inch. They cever all ap proaches up to four miles distance, and some of mu- gunboats have gotten within range. Some of their captains told me that shells big as footballs fell fell within fifty yard* of their vessels, at lour miles before they got up speed and turned tail. 1 talked to an insurgent captain a few days ago He had wriggled through the Spanish lines about Cardenas. He has been in the bush two years, and looked like a fcwcde. but is a Cuban. He said the in surgents had 3.500 men about Cardenas 20000 about 'Havana, and 60.000 mon aH told, but they are short of arms, and espe cially unmutntion. Before a battle, If. *aid. they serve out three rounds per man two to (Ire and one to Iseep for tomor row. They want the 50-ealibre bullet that will stop a man, ..and not the small calibre Mauser, That Affair at Guantanamo. A good deal of space and attention has been given to the fight between the ma rines and guerrllas at. Guantanamo, but in reality the tight was of no great conse quence. It was. as an exchange remarks, important only from the fact that it was the first action between Americans and Sp.mian.ls on Cuban soil. The marines wire lauded merely to establish a base and occupied a sort of outpost. Without a supporting force it was’ not expected that th. > could withstand a determined attack of the Spaniard in any force. They have retir.sl to the cover of the guns of the fleet and it is impossible that there wHI be any more fighting until the transports arrive. The engagement demonstrated the a< t the S|v.iniards in the Cuban jun gles are ugly customers. But Americans tax. a history so far as Indian fighting goe\ and they will give the enemy a few pointers as soon as they get the lay of the ground. The landing of Shafter's army will im nuxhately put a new light on the situation in Cuba. A New Comet. N’o vigorous and well regulated war has t ver jet dared to break out without an auxiliary comet to frighten the supersti kmis, notices an observant exchange. P to a few days ago the present con flict has not enjoyed the prestige to which , ‘ was ent.tUl along that line, but a' last the accompanying comet has been dis covered. d ‘ ngton ’ of the Lick Observatory, made the discovery. The comet is in th e constellation Scorpio, about one degree northeast of the bright star Antares The discovery was made by photograph A plate exposed for other purposes on that region of the sky showed, when developed a strong trail produced by a strange ob ject. Mr. Coddington examined the object, -md found it to be a comet of about an eighth magnitude. Observations by Pro fessor Hussey showed that it is moving toward the southeast about one degree per day. 1 A ® soon as observations have been se cured on three evenings its orbit will be computed, Mr Wright observed its spetv rum, and found h to be one of the usual ormation with continuous spectrum and •weak carbon bands. The Cordele Sentinel makes this earlv announcement: ’ Bob Berner will be the next governor of Georgia after Candler. And yet the Macon News says it will be Jim Griggs.—Rome Tribune. A Man's Rights Movement, An English merchant. William Lustin by name, thinks rhat it is high time that men should organize forth.- purpose of obtaining certain rights under the law. of' wnich they are now unjustly deprived. He has therefor* formed o I. ague ar men's rights, the cbji.t of which is -to secure legal protection for men. It appears from Mr. tustin’s contention that in some respects English law is really, unjust to men. He says, for instance, that min are barred from bringing suit for biaudi r, this proceeding , open -m worn tn only. Again, a man ."*n not mTnt suit for summary parari.m in th. special c»urt appointed to hear such cases, but a woman can. Mr Austin on tin ds that this arrangement, designed for the special pro tection of women, may have been ne.dcd in the first Instance, but insists that it is no longer so. Anoth* r wrong of dne-sided sex legislation, contends this champion of down-trodden man, is an art passed sev eral years ago making it a duty tor a hus band to maintain hi. wife, even notwith standing flagrant infidelity. Love of Country. The fact i.s estalbli.-hed that there is as. much if not more Iqvi of crmntrv among the people of the United State.- that th r,’ is among the people of any ojher country on the earth. “Foreign flafions have acrei-d.” observes the I biUdelphi i Pres, "that because the Ahmr+ean people are so conglomerate, many of them ■» ine <>t alimi birth arid many others ot alien pe rentage, and because the country is so large and the interest# of liferent sec tions are so diverse, that there could b. no true national spirit. This fact, it was claimed, would become embarrassingly prominent in a war with a foreign nation That situation is now present, but instead of there being any lack of national spirit and patriotism, exactly \he contrary is. evident. The foreign-'tiortj ditizen is just as patriotic as .the man ? whqjcan rata his ancestry back to the Mayflower.” Judge Notting hany. The following from the 'Houston Romo Journal wflß be almost unantmously en dorsed in Macon and jels,owh<-fe: Noticin- that Jm|<. \V. I) Nottingham is a candidate for the judgeship of the Ma con city court, we desire' to ray a ward or two in bin favor. In giving this endorsement, we say not a word against the preset judge, who is a native of Houston, an < minent lawyer, a thoroughly Uipnight man and a good judge. bor several years Mr Nottingham was judge of Houston county court, and we dare say no community was ever served more correctly or with greater ability on (he bench. He is a truly good lawyer in every sense of the word, a faithful friend amd correct citizen under all circumstances and condtlons. He is entirely worthy of the exalted position to which he aspires. The Catholic Journal, whose editor wears the shamrock inside and out, takes a par donable pride in the fact Vhai four of the.; eight heroes of the iMerrimac are of Irish blood, and that the first .American soldier to set foot on Guinan soil is named O'Con nell. It is now up to the A. P. A. Wise advertisers are not deterred by talk of dull times, truthfully marks an ex change. It is the hustler that sells goods in hard times. Anybody can sell the goods when everybody has money to spend and is looking for a place to spend it. Says the Rome Tribune: “Hon. Clark Howel, editor of the Atlanta Constitution, is receiving more congratulations than any other man .in the state except 'Hon. Allen D. Candler, over the result of the recent primary. ‘ HOiRRiIiB'LE. "Think of those poor fellows who will have to fight under the blazing hot Cuban sun!” "Yes; but think of those who will have ko fight, under some famous man’s 3on!" OH.-THE MISERY GF IT. "'I was never so fully impressed with the uncivilized and barbarous rule of Spain until today," said Sprockett. “Indeed?” "Yes, sir. Wihy, there Isn’t one good bicycle road in Cuba." A HiEIUM'NE. Lick Observatory, 'Cal.; June 16—..A comet of about the tenth magnitude has been dis covered here thy C. D. Perrine. Its (position was right ascension three hours and twen ty-nine minutes, declination north fifty eight degrees thirty-six minutes, in the constellation Camatoparvalis. It became invisible in the daylight before accurate measures could be secured to prove that motion existed. 'Mr. Perrine reobserved the comet after dark and determined its daily motion to he east N. E. degree thirty-four minutes, one quarter of a degree. The object can be seen with a moderate sized telescope. A.telegram received by the observatory announces that another return of Eneks periodic comet was observed by Tebbutt, an .Australian astronomer on June 'll.
