MS I LT MAN
TO LEAVE BMI
An American Sailor Who Was
Left in Prison by His
Vessel.
I
« 81 BRITISH CONSUL
And Sent Away from Havana on a
British War Ship that Has
Funny Experience.
New York, June 24.—The last American
I to leave Havana was Arthur Parkinson, a
sailor, who managed to get.away as late
as June 7th and who has arrived in New
York.
He was in Havana during many exciting
days of the blockade. Parkinson was
boatswain on the Cuban mail steamer Con-
I one said Parkinson did it. The Havana
I on 'March 31. A fight broke out among the
crew and when it was over a Swede lay on
i the deck with a bad scalp wound. Every
one said Parkinson did it. Tljie Havanan
police heard of the affair and Parkinson
I was arrested and locked up.
“I was put in an old miPtary prison in
solitary confinement for two days and was
finally taken before a m irine judge. . He
took down the evidence and sent me back
with the instruction that I should be fed
on something beside bread and' water, and
that I should not be confin- 3 ! alone.
“My snip had sailed. I was thrown nto
a diny hole with a motly crowd of Cubans
and Spaniards. I was stJl there when the
war broke cut. I had written many iei
ters to the American consul, but had never
received any answer. Fiuallv I got out
late in 'May. through the efforts of the
British consul.
“They are a cheerful lot in Havana. The
people are bouyed up by false reports of
victory. During my time out of prison
several of the American ships of the block
ade line were reported destroyed, partic
ularly the battleship Indiana, which was
'blown to pieces by the guns of Morro Cas- '
tie.
“I was there the day the newspapers got
out extras about the sinking of the 'Merri
mac. They called it a grand Spanish vic
tory, and spoke of the men captured as
only a few survivors.
“The'British consul fin illy got me aboard
a British man of war, which carried me
to Kingston, Jamaica. A little American
auxiliary cruiser was sent to chase us on
-■the night we left. The English comman
der saw her light aa-1 just for a lark be
steamed faster. Presently he heard rhe
boom of a little gun but as he failed to
hear the shot whistle thrfiugh the air he
ordered still faster speed. The next min
ute a solid shot rang right over the cam
manders head as he stood on the bridge.
“He brought the ship about in a jiffy,
and in a few minutes a tug ninty feet long
puffed up against the big warship. The
astonished Briton was allowed to proceed
after he had told his pedigree.
“I came to New York from Jamaica on
the- German steamship Holstein.”
