It is understood that Colonel Rhy s im
mune* are overjoyed ■that their chance has
come. They have listened long enough to
the insinuation that some few have slipped
uno the regiment without being able to
mow an honorable yellow fever record.
They now' want an opportunity to show
what tin y can do to Yellow Jack. And tile
government will probably give them a
chance at once.
It i.s b. heved that with Shafter’s army
reinforced by three or 1 sir thousand mc-li
who can inhale yellow fever germs like
so much ineuuse, who oan run -against the
disease day after day and never feel any
Injurious effects, the American army In
Cuba will be in vulnerable.
With so many germ-proof soldiers at
the front, the Spaniards can no longer re
gard Yellow Jack as an ally. Colonel Ray s
boys laugh at rhe thought.
Despite our modest promise of « govern
ment m Cuba by the people of the island
Uncle Sam may find conditions at the close
of the war such that the Cubans will not
he capable of governing themselves for
several years to come. At any events it
looks as if the presence of an American
garrison In Cuba will be necessary for a
long lime, thinks the Birmingham (News.
The Irony of Fate.
The examination of the wrecks of Span
ish warships blown up off the coast tit
Santiago, if the unofficial reports thereon
can be believed, has brought out enough
to confirm the verdict of our naval board
with reference to the destruction of the
Maine.
The Memphis Scimitar calls attention to
this point, in a most forcible way. The
naval board which examined the Maine
wrick, decided, it will be remembered,
that the battleehip was destroyed by an
explosion from the •utside.
This, it will be remembered, caused
much indignation among the Spaniards,
whose own board of inquiry promptly de
clared that their investigation proved that
the battleship was destroped by an inside
accident an explosion of one of her for
ward magazines.
It hapepns that after the beaching of
two of the Spanish cruisers they were
Mown up by explosions in their forward
magazines. .An examination of their
hulks shows that their plates were blown
outward, just as our experts said would
have beiyti the ease with the Maiqe, had
she been blown up by internal explosion.
The bottom plates of the Maine were
foiMid to be blown upward and inward
from the port side, aud, moreover, they
were thirty feet alxjve their normal posi
tion.
It seems the very irony of fate that the
wrecks of the Spanish cruisers destroyed
off Santiago should thus tell the story of
Mie crime committed in Havana harbor.
•’Dixie” was played In the hall of the
House of .Represeniati es a few days ago
for the first time. It will be the favorite
national air by the time the South turns
out a few more Schleys. Hobsons. Bagleys
and Blues, thinks the Savannah Press.
Cussing Bob Evans.
Bob Evans seems to have done most of
the talking in connection with Schley's
victory off Santiago, in fact Evans has
done most of the talking for the navy
since the war bejmn. . Indeed, If he has
yet dene anything but talk we have failed
to discover It.
And the worst of it is Evans invariably
punctuates his remarks with oaths that
are entirely out of place and gratuitous.
In fact. he .seems to be continually making
an effort to work In a “cuss” word; he
goes out of his way to exploit his gift of
profanity.
And it is safe to say "Fightin’ Bob”
Evans has succeeded In disgusting pretty
nearly everybody in the United States. To
most people his title seems to be a decided
misnomer; “Cussin’ Bob" would more ac
curately describe the man—for it is
through his profanity that he is chiefly
known to fame. On the whole, we are in
clined to think it would be better to re
gard ( ussin Bob' Evans as a closed in
cident hereafter.
Speaking of the new president of Wes
leyan, the Forsyth Chronicle says: “Dr.
Roberts has been the pastor in charge of
Trinity church in Atlanta for several years
and is regarded us one of the most bril
liant preachers in the oonfer.nce. It is
expected that under his administration this
college will expand in its patronage and
usefulness to an unprecedented degree.”
It Costs to Get the News.
*E>.n the huMnoss m<Mi who pav 25 cents

A ork is $2.25 per word. The messages have
<* be received and transmitted a score of
times before reaching its rtwti nation. A
tingle message has cost some of the pa
pers considerably more than a thousand
and fortunes have been spent by
some of the larger paper- almost daily in
collecting the news from all parts of the
globe. Perhaps the paper spending the
largest amount for news since the opening
of the war, is the New Pork Sun. This
paper bas its exclusive news service from
all sections of the glob®. employing the
ber.t and most reliable wrltr-ns of th» en
tire newspaper world, and the almost uni
versal verdict among them is that the Sun
leads them all.
The Mexican Herald says: “Naval Con
structor Hobson remembered Lord Wolse

BlOS.—the war department has been delug- ;
el with protests from the commercial i;i- j
trrests of the country against the eontinu- '

gi tat detriment of commerce, in certain
cases inliucn -es were brought to bear that !

this only incr<ase»i the dissatisfaction in
localities wm re they were rigidly applied.
Practically it has been impossible for
shipping to enter or l ave any of the har
bor- of the United tSkites duiing the la®t
two months during the hours of sunset and
sunrise. The decision of the cabinet to
remove these mines now is one of the most
significant manifestations of the supreme
confidence of the government in the future
and the protection of the United States
from attack at the hands of any hostile
power. It is only another indication of the
fact present struggle will be of
short duration. After thoroughly consider
ing the subject it has been decided by the
engineer that the safest -and quickest
way to do this is by exploding them and
the orders to do this have been prepared
for transmission to all the United State®
engineer officers in charge of harbor de
fenses throughout the country.
The Louisville Post says: "Commodore
Schley Is ail right, but Admiral Schley
would please the people better.”
Fire Gun for Advertisers.
The News’ press is like a rapid-fire gun
in the service of the wide-awake adver
tisers of Macon. Hundreds of rounds are
fired daily, and thousands of readers are
struck by .the bright, clean, newsy mis
siles.
The News drives hopie the announce
ments of advertisers as does no other me
dium in Macon. It is a newsy, readable
paper, and is r« ad by the people. It is
read tn offices and shops and stores and
mills and factories, and around the even
ing lamp in the homes of Macon and
neighboring townr.
The Forsyth Chronicle has the following
to sa’y of the Hon. Fleming dußignon: ,
T'hif able and distinguished gentleman
has been re-elected chairman of the state
Democratic executive committee, and will
no doubt lead the party to a glorious vic
tory in the coming political fight that we
are to have with the Populists, and, per
haps, Republicans. We see statements and
suggestions from a number of papers in
sinuating that he is not in sympathy with
the free silver plank in the Democratic
platform. It is not given Eo us to know
Mr. dußignon's sympathies or likes or dis
likes, but this w r e do know, he is an honor
. able Democrat and man, and when he ac
cepted the chairmanship of the party, he
accepted the entire platform, with its de
claration of principles; and if those prin
ciples, free silver and all are not repudia
ted until he does it they wsrll remain in
tact. The charge that he will make an ef
fort to commit the party to the single stan
dard is unjust to a good ami great man,
and the silly suggestion should be in future
abandoned.
Our new possessions, the Ladrone Is
lands. were discovered by Magellan in
1521 and so named because of the thievish
propensities of the natives. They, were
renamed the Marianne Islands by the
Jesuits, in 1667, is honor of the then queen
of Spain. The islands number twenty and
have a population of 10,000 who seem to
have rejoiced greatly nt seeing the Span
ish governor and all the soldiers bagged
and carried off to Manila by Captain Glass,
on the Charleston.
The Ixmdon Times thinks the govern
ment at Washington unwise to insist upon
the unconditional surrender of Santiago.
It says: "Besides risking an unnecessary
loss of life without appreciably furthering
the conquest of Cuba, the United States
may find themselves in a position of seri
ous moral responsibility for the starving
population.” What’s the matter with
Toral being responsible for the continued
suffering, when he can end it l>y yield
ing.
Says the Memphis Commercial-Appeal:
"Imagine Grant trying to swipe Sherman’s
laurals, or Lee filching Stonewall Jackson's
exploits in the Shenandoah.”

■Warrenton, Ga.. July 14—A cyclone
struck in the edge of town yesterday af

a due north course. A mile out it struck
the home of Mr. W. E. English, completely
demolishing his large barn and five other
outhouses, killing a colored woman, also
three mules and horses and badly cripling
four others.
The track of the storm was not over
fifty yards wide at this point. Nearly every

it will probably be malaria and chills. A
working man will probably have a bilious

deadly consumption. A business, or pro

It isn't hard to prevent or cure these dis

AT NORWOOD.
Norwood, Ga., July 14 —A cyclone struck
the eastern suburbs of Norwood yesterday
evening, blew down the negro school house
and a negro outhouse on Mr. N. J. Bowen’s
place. Huge trees were torn up by the
roots and fence rails were scattered far
and near.
Two negro women were in the house on
Mr. Bowen’s place, but escaped with slight
injuries.
Three miles south of Norw’ood it struck
Mr. English’s place and blew down his
large barn on seven head of mules and
horses, killing and wounding all but two;
tore down the cook's house near his dwell
ing and killed his cook, Cora Jordan, col
ored; chimneys were blown off the dwell
ing and the windows on one side xvere
knocked out; carriage house, corn crib and
two other houses were demolished, or
chards were ruined. The damage to crops
was heavy.
At this place the cyclone could be easily
seen and caused a regular stampede. Mer
chants left their stores, people their dwell
ings and sought refuge in corn patches
near by.
HOW TO LOOK GOOD.
Good looks are really more than skin
deep, depending entirely on a healthy’ con
dition of all the vital organs. If the liver
is inactive, you have a bilious look: if
your stomach is disordered you have a
dyspeptic look;- if your kidneys are-af
fected, you have a pinched look. Secure
good health, and you will surely have good
looks. ' Electric Bitters” is a good Altera
tive and Tonic. Acts directly on the stom
ach, liver and kidneys, purifies the blood,
cures pimples, blotches and boils, and
gives a good complexion. Every bottle

Erysipelas
Two Diseases That Gause Their
Victims to Be Shunned by
Their Fellow-Man.
Spring fifed, Mo.
'Gf.sti.kmkn : I commenced taking* P.
P. P.. Lippman’s Great Reinedv, last
Fall, for Erysipelas. My face was com
pletely covered with the disease ; I took
a short course of I*. P. P., and it soon
disappeared. This Spring- I became
much debilitated and again took an
other course, and I am now in good
condition. I consider P. P. P. one of
the best blood preparations on the
market, and for those who need a gen
eral tonic to build up the system and
improve the appetite I consider that it
has no equal. Will say, anyone who
cares to try P. P. P. will not be disap
pointed in its results, and I, therefore,
cheerfully recommend it.

Gfnti.kmf.n: Last June I had n
scrofulous sore which broke out on my
ankle. It grew rapidly, and soon ex
tended from my ankle to my knee. I
got one bottle of your P. P. P. t Lipp
man’s Great Remedy, and was agree
ably surprised at the result. The ent ire
sore healed at once. I think 1 have
taken almost every medicine recom
mended for scrofula and catarrh, and
your F. P. P. is the best I have evei
tried. It cannot be recommended too
highly for blood poison, etc.
Yours very truly,
W. P. HUNTER.
P. P. P. cures all blood and skin dis
ease, both in men and women.
Rheumatism, which makes man's life
a hell upon earth, can be relieved at
once by P. P. P., Lippman’s Great Rem
edy. It makes a PERMANENT cure.
P. P. P. is the great and only remedy
for advanced cases of catarrh. Stop
page of the nostrils and difficulty in
breathing when lying down, P. P. P.
relieves at once.
P. P. I’. cures blood poisoning in all
its various stages, old ulcers, sores and
