CRIME OF
THE KLONDIKE.
Stories About the Place Have
Been Grossly Exag
gerated.
LoKamrport. ln<l.. Gigui<t 2flf—-Dr. J. W.
Balla-d today received a letter from Lige
Booth, dated at bauson City. Alaska, July
20.
Booth riartfd for the Klondike early in
March with Dave Bush and Elias Kistler,
of this city.
Booth is wholly reliable. He says:
th< Klondike has been beautifully and
fieri:.ously d»-. ribed. Everything has been
mi-1 epr» .-enti d . the output is not nearly as
much as reported on the outside, and the
ir<a of the rich fields is limited. There
ar.- not to exceed fifty good paying mines
in th * entire reg.on and the rich ones are
very few.
Eldorado and Middle Bonanzo are the
centers of rich diggings, and there are
some fairly good ones on Sulphur and Do
minion Creeks. The best indications of a
[laying mine is one in operation, but there
are hundreds of dumps on some of the
principal creeks that have not been wash
ed, for the simple reason that they will not
pay expenses. I have been all over the
district, and when you leave the discovered
gold fields you are simply not in it. The
dust seems to run in spots. Thousands of
•laini that would not make good Moose
pastures are staked out.
"Every little swale that has not enough
running water to swim a duck is staked,
but it is impossible to learn whether the
claims are recorded. The recorder's office
is as sacred and as secret as a monastery.
The officials seem to he in the ring.
“If a man makes a strike he cannot have
the claim recorded. You pay an inspector
$.lO to go out and see if the claim is any
good, and if it is, he says it is on govern
ment land Thousands of prospectors have
become disgusted and gone home, both up
: the river and down.
“A line of boats now ply between here
and Lake Bennett. Every boat going out
is loaded to its fullest capacity. The fare
Ito Lake Bennett is $l7O, without board.
From there the travelers have fifty miles
to walk to Dyea. I have been thinking of
going down to the American side, but
prospectors from there say it is nearly all
' staked off, and nothing is being done. Un
less the laws shall be changed there will
not be much done here next winter. Thou
j sands of men are sitting around waiting
for any kind of work.
"Women make more money Than any
one else. A washerwoman can easily make
: from SSO to $75 per week. Dressmakers
coin money, and the display of fine dresses
;is astounding. There are several dance
halls and gambling rooms. Perfect order
> is maintained.
“Dawson is built in a swamp and teams
mire in the main streets. iKigs fights are
of common occurrence. There are hundreds
■on every street. One man brought in a
| cat and seven kittens and he sold the lot
I for $25 a piece. There are a few teams
I here, and they command $lO an hour. Hay
I is SSOO a ton. Gold bags at 10 cents in
| Chicago, bring $1 and a man could have
j carried hundreds in his overcoat pockets.
| Bananas are $1 each, oranges $6 per dozen,
brooms $x a -piece, baking powder $3.50 per
j pound ami other things in proportion. Doc
\ tors have little 'to do, as every man has
| his own medicine case.
i "I saw Berry clean his sluice one night
j ai.d get lots of pure gold nuggets as big
| as hulled walnuts.”
A CLEVWK TRICK.
It certainly looks like it. but there is
really no trick about It. Anybody can try
it who has lame back and weak kidneys,
malaria or nervous troubles. We mean he
ran cure himself right away by taking
Electric Bitters. This medicine tones up
the whole system, acts as astiinulant to
the liver and kidneys, is a blood purifier
and nerve tonic. It cures constipation,
headache, fainting spells, sleeplessness
and melancholy, it Is purely vegetable,
a mild laxative, and restores the system to
its natural vigor. Try Electric Bitters and
be convinced that they are a miracle
worker. Every battle guaranteed. Duly

Regarding Distribution of Supplies for
Cubans.
Washington. August 20 —The work is
carrying on rapidly the work of providing
■the Cuban army and destitutes with sub
sistence and supplies. A large shipment
was made yesterday from Tampa and
Miami. d'Ta., for Santiago, and this will be
followed soon by other cargoes of supplies.
I’h< offers of the Red Cross Society to dis
tribute relief supplies to the suffering Cu
bans are not regarded with favor by 'the
officers of the -subsistence department, 'the
proposition being regarded in about the
same way that the surgeon general of the
army and the officers of 'the medical corps
regard the services of the Red Cross nurses

The authorities have not yet accepted

New York August 20—All the important

Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, discussing the de

factories of the country under the domina

an English syndicate has put up $1,000,000

through which all business is to be tran

Chicago and New York. Commercial ter

HOLDING OF ISLANDS
By United States Said to Be Opposed by
Continental Europe.
! Paris. August 13.- —The feeling is general
here that the United States and Spain are
not to be left free by the powers to decide

reference of the matter to other nations.
One Paris newspaper insinuates that as

Manila, that nation may invite foreign
powers to intervene.
