A Trial is All We Ask. NEWS PRINTING CO WHITE FLAG OVE£ SCHLEY When He and His Board Enter the Harbor of San Juan at Porto Rico. ON SUNDAY NEXT They Are Expected to Arrive—Will Receive Island from the Span isn Commission. Washington, Sept. 2. —General Brooke has been ordered to leave Ponce by eea and meet Admiral Schley and General Gordon in the Seneca, off San Juan, Proto Rloo, on Sunday next, when it Is expected that the American military commission ■will organize on board the cruiser New Or leans and immediately enter the harbor of San Juan under a flag of truce. The Span ish commissioners are awaiting them In the city, and have announced their readi ness to enter upon the negotiations at once for the evacuation of the island. All details have been left by both the United States and Spain to their respective representatives, their instructions in each case being of the most general character, with the object of hoisting the American flag and displacing Spanish authorities as quickly as possible. Tho most sanguine officials in Washing ton do not look for the conclusion of the commission's labors in less than a month. The chief problems to be settled, accord ing to present anticipation, relate to the transportation home of the Spanish troops and the subsistence and maintenance of the Spaniards up to the time of their em barkation. The surrender is absolute so far as all property is concerned, although the Span iards will undoubtedly be permitted to take their email arms with them, and be allow ed to depart with all the honors of war. It is estimated that 10,000 men will be surrendered, and the probabilities are that they will have to bo fed until Spain can send five steamers from home to transport them. Adjutant General Corbin thinks that it ought not to take more than a mouth ’o get them started for home. The American commissionor*, however, will ask to be given control of the port and city, in order that commerce may be re sumed promptly and the vessels of all nations be permitted to enter and clear with cargoes. If this is accomplished, no tice will be at once given to the world. C A. Q T O TJ I A. . Bears the The Kind You Have Ahjjays Bought Signature j ” SHORT GN RAIN. Strange to Say the State Has Not Had Enough Yet. ■As a result of twenty-two rainy days during the month of August the deficiency In rainfall for the year 1898 has been re duced to 5.90 Inches. 'But despite this un usually largo number of rainy days the rainfall for August was only 1.95 above the normal for that month. During the month of August 6.66 inches of rain fell. The month, while it apeared to be unusually wet, was only about two Inches above the normal. The weather was bad and cloudy a greater portion of the time, but on many of the cloudy days the rainfall was not nearly so great as on the same day last year. At one time during the month of August the deficiency was reduced to 5.65 Inches, but at another time it went up as high as eight inches. The fluctuation caused many to comment on it because, although the weather was rainy, the deficiency became larger instead of smaller. This is accoun ted for In the fact that the average rain fall for each day in each month for the past nineteen years is kept on record and it is on this average that the average for each month is based. This covers the en tire period of the existence of the weather office here, and when a day falls below the average of the same day on record the deficiency is decreased, despite the fact that it might rain on that day. In this way It was possible for the rain fall to increase during August because, although it rained, the rainfall did not reach the average and therefore increased the deficiency. At the close of the monh of July the de ficiency was 7.85, but the Increase in the average of August caused a decrease to the same extent in the deficiency in rain. The average rainfall for September is 3.78 inches. The records show that in one September the rainfall was as high as fourteen inches and in another less than on inch. What September has in store in the matter of rain can only be predicted, but. it seems probable that the deficiency will be decreased. A TEXAS WONDER. Hall’s Great Discovery. JONSS. fl GRML TiiflE During the Battle of Santiago--Sick or Well, a Rush Night and Day. PHCKERS WERE ALL HEROES. Their Untiring Efforts in Getting Ammu nition and Rations to the Front Saved the Day. P. E. Butler, of pack train No. 3. writing from Santiago de Cuba, on July 23d, says: “We all had diarrhoea in more or less violent form, and when we landed we had no time to see a doctor, for it was a ease of rush and rush night and day to keep the troops supplied with ammunition and rations, but thanks to Chamberlain’s Colic Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy, we were able to keep at work and keep our health: in fact. I sincerely believe at one critical time this medicine was the indirect sav iour of our army, for if the packers had been un-able to work there would have been no way of getting supplies to the front. There were no roads that a wagon train could use.. My comrade and myself had the good fortune to lay in a supply of this medicine for our pack train before we left Tampa, and I know In four eases it saved life.” The above letter was written to he man ufacturers of this medicine, the Chamber lain Medicine Co., Dee Moines, lowa. MACON NEWS FRIDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 2 169*, THAT BIG FIGHT Between McCoy and Corbett Will Be Pulled Off. “That the Corbett-McCoy fight will come off on October l.Ahe new date agreed on a few days ago ,1s a fact not now questioned by many sporting people,” says the World. “This delay promises to be an advantage to at least one of the parties to the con tract, the Hawthorne Athletic Club. As September 10 drew near the ministers, purity leagues and many prominent citi zens in Buffalo took a stand of open hos tility to the fight. “The backers and managers of the club declared that all such agitation was use less; that they were keeping in the limits of the law, and that there fore they had nothing to fear. But they were uneasy for all that, and the agents who had tickets for sale In-New York were not swamped with applications and green backs. The advantage of the delay is that the Hawthorne people will be able to put up an attraction of good proportions on September 10, and thereby test the ability of the agitators to close them up. This is to he the Ernst-Lavigne go for the light weight championship. It is not believed that the sports from afar will flock to Buffalo to see this fight in such numbers as they will on October 1, but the local contingent and the devotees near by will make enough bets and create a big enough stir to cause the ‘antis’ to take action . “The promoters feel pretty safe. The opposition quieted down even before the Corbett tragedy, and It is believed by im partial judges that It will die a natural death long before the day of the big t/t --tle. The latter say It is pretty safe to predict that the big fellows will fight in Buffalo unless they change their minds of their own accord. “Corbett is on his way east from San Francisco, and is expected to reach Asbury Park by the middle of this week. He will find all of his trainers waiting for him, and before another ten days have elapsed he will be doing as much hard work as when he left off so unexpectedly. “Kid McCoy is at Saratoga, and will re sume active training tomorrow. He eased up a little a week ago and took a trip to Buffalo, but his condition did not suffer in the least.” Bears the „ KM You Have Always Bought “Eeudrwetit I'l-jw.ht Naohfc.” “There Is a watchword which for cen turies has blazoned forth on the banners and iiags or brave little Holland,” writes Edward Bak, himself o Hollander, in La dies’ Horae journal for September, “and sunk deep futo the heart of every man, woman and child in that sturdy country of the dikes.
