Sketch of the Life of Richard
Malcolm Johnson Who
Died Yesterday.
B OFFERtO PRESIDED
—
Os the College at One Time But He
j Refused It Was a Very Mod
est Man Indeed.
The a: nouncement of the death of
: R.if,i, i M t.'colm Johnston brings sorrow
, to l .s thousands of admirers all over the
country, b'i. especially to all Georgians,
■ because of- achievements as a Georgian
I in the republic of letters.
Although ue Colonel has lived in Bal
-1 timore for many years, honors were ten
dered him in Georgia which might well
j hav. ah , . I hirn to remain here. Rev.
i Ii ivid E. Butlt r. who was ever and ardent
. worker for Mercer Univ, rsity, says that
I Colonel John.-ton was once elected presi
dent of tin 1 niversity, and so informed by
j a conHnitt. e for that purpose. When found
jhe blus h. 1 1 ke a maiden as he spoke of the
, high honor and responsibiity of such a
trust, ai.d. despite much importunity by
the trus'tes h> de dined the office. The Col
onel, along with Dr. B. F. Tharp, of Perry,
and Dr. A. R. Welborn, of Atlanta, gradua
ted at Mercer in 1841, and composed the
first graduating class. The trustees thus
had every opportunity to know his worth
and fitness for the presidency.
By three universities the degree of LL.D,
has bei n conferred on his name, one of
them being the University of Georgia, in
whose faculty for a while he was profes
sor of belles letters.
Colonel Johnston has written "A His
tory of English Literature,” ‘‘Life of Alex
ander H. Stephens,” “Dukesboro Tales,”
"Old Mark Langston,” ‘‘Two Grey Tour
ists,” ‘‘Mr. Absalom Blllingslea and Othet
Georgia Folk,” ‘‘Widow Guthrie,” “The
Primes and Their Neighbors,” “Studies—
Literary and Social,” "Mr. Billy Downs
and His Likes,” “Little Ike Templin and
Other Stories,” “Lectures on English.
French and Spanish Literature,” “Old
Times in Middle Georgia,” “Ogeecfoee Cross
Firings."
Any Georgian who has failed to read the
Colonel's faithful and pleasing portrayals
of “persons and things,” as they were in
the days of our fathers, has denied himself
a source of pleasure and profit, the denial
of which is not less than criminal negli
gence.
FOOL QUESTIONS
By “Cheerful Idiots" -A Man Falls and is
Asked if He Fell.
“Singular what fool qu-’-tHons people get
in the 'ab’.t of isking, ’ remarked a chronic
grumbler to x News reporter. “A little
while ago a man stepped on a banana skin
hr something on Thirl street and sat down
bard enough to jar all the (tilings out of
his upper teeth. A cheerful idiot risked
up and said: ‘Heilo? had* a fall did you?’
Wonder if he thought the man had a hair
cut or a buggy ride? But that's nothing.
I frequently visit East Macon and I never
t ike the street oar without encountering
some prize donkey who says: “How d’do.
Smith; going for a ride? I got mad tho
other day and did the trodden worm act.
‘No, sir,’ I said, firmly; I am not going to
take a ride. I am going to take a balloon.
I am going exactly to fly, after which I
propose to blow her up and fly to Porto
Rico.’ The donkey went along talking to
himself and sinm told several of my
friends that 1 was crazy as a bed bug.”

During the Battle of Santiago--Sick
or Well, a Rush Night and Day.
i
PRGKERS WERE RLL HEROES.
Their Untiring Efforts in Getting Ammu
nition and Rations to the Front
Saved the Day.
P. E. Butler, of pack train No. 3. writing
from Santiago de Cuba, on July 23d, says:
“We all had diarrhoea in more or less
j violent form, and when we landed we had
i no time to see a doctor, for it was a cose
! of rush and rush night and day to keep
!the troops supplied with ammunition and
rations, but thanks to Chamberlain's Colic
Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy, we .were
I able to keep at work and keep our health;
‘ in fact, I sincerely believe at one critical
time this medicine was the indirect eav
i iour of our army, for if the packers had
■ been unable to work there would have
i been no way of getting supplies to the
j front. There were no roads that a wagon
i train could use.. My comrade and myself
had the good fortune to lay in a supply
of this medicine for our pack train before
. j we left Tampa, and I know in four cases
' it saved life.”

Hanson and Wilkinson in Wrightsville Yes
terday.
Wrightsville, Ga., Sept. 23. —-Wilkinson
and Hanson spoke at this place yesterday.
The former only made a short speech of
Twentv minutes, in which he devoted his
time to attacking Brantley, the Democratic
party and the Atlanta Constitution. He
tried to persuade the people that Brantley
was not an advocate of free silver and even
intimated that he himself was a free sil
ver! te, by saying that he had voted for M 1-
ikln previously, was a silver man.
He attacked the Constitution vigorously,
saying that it had done more to corrupt
the politics of the state than any other
one thing. He did not deny what It said
in reference to the letter he was reported
to have published, further than that the
Constitution had fold it and the Constitu
tion could not tell the truth. He said very
little about fusion.
Wilkinson was followed by Hanson, who
made a very lengthy speech. He directed
his attack mainly on Democracy, saying
the Democratic party had no principles to
which it could adhere. He made the asser
tion that the Democratic party W'as the
cause of the unfair means used at the polls
and endeavored to lay everything corrupt
and objectionable in politics at its door.
He said the circulars had been written anl
sent to the negroes all over the state ask
ing them to vote the Democratic ticket, be
cause the governor had pardoned a negro
accused of assault.
“I have a great many 'riends in the
Democratic party,” said he, “and the only
fault I can find is that they belong to that
party.”
Dating the course of his speech he made
; hi« remark:
“The Democratic party had been begging
the people to give them a chance for a
long time and the only man that they got
in for a period of forty years was Cleve
land, and when he got elected he didn’t do
anything that benefited the government.”
He then proceeded to attack Cleveland's
administration. He also said that the
Democrats had stolen a part of the Pop
list platform. There was a great deal of
enthusiasm among the negroes.

' / parties. They call it
' the “tug of war.’’
Many a. hardworking man and woman in
each day’s toil, is pulling a “tug of war”
with death for an antagonist.
They fail to take proper care of their
health. When they suffer from indigestion
or a slight bilious attack they “wearit out.”
After a while these disorders wear unt the
reckless man or woman and the result is
consumption, malaria, rheumatism, or some
blood or skin disease. Dr. Pierce’s Com
mon Sense Medical Adviser tells all about
these diseases. It is free to all. Dr. Pieice’s
Golden Medical Discovery cures all the
maladies named. It cures the cause. It
makes the appetite hearty, the digestion
perfect, the liver active and the blood pure.
It is the great blood-maker, flesh builder

tute.
“ I had a very severe pain in the small of my
hack where my hips join on to my body, and ft
hurt so that I thought I was going to come apart,”
writes Wm. Z. Powers, Esq., of Erin Shades,
Henrico Co., Va. “My doctor came and pro
nounced it rheumatism. He gave me a prescrip
tion but I got no better, but worse. I purchased
a bottle of Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery
from mv druggist and commenced to use it. I
began to improve at once and got well. Now I
am in perfect health, —no pain, no rheumatism."

We Have Wailed
A week or two before directing your
attention to our New Store. In the
first place, our street has been torn
up and we have not been easy of
access. In the next place, our stock
was not in place, and we were really
not in shape to give you an adequate
idea of what our New Store is like.
But you may take our word for it
that we are ready now. Ready with
the largest, most varied and best
selected stock we have ever handled,
and, of course, this is saying all
there is to be said.
Like Barnum, we have searched
the earth, so to speak, in order that
we might miss nothing that you
would want to see or possess. We
have not been all over the earth to
do this, but we did spend some time
in New York, inspecting and select
ing what the world has to offer of
goods in our line—and New York is
a world in itself.
We have bought liberally, some
would say lavishly, because we ex
pect liberal buying. We have not
been deterred by 4 cent cotton, be
cause the cheaper the cotton the more
closely people search for bargains.
And this sort of searching brings
them right to us.
People want Crockery, Tinware,
Household Goods, Notions, etc., etc.,
for less money now than they ever
expected to get them for before. We
kept this fact well in mind while
buying, and we don’t believe we neg
lected an opportunity to get bargains.
In proportion, and even more, as
we benefited by close buying we pro
pose to give you the benefit of close
selling.
We quote no prices today. This is
merely our fall announcement. It is
merely the introductory speech to
the eloquent bargain talks that are
to come later.
We can prove every statement; we
will make good every promise. If we
can’t save you money, if we don’t
even amaze you with the beauty of
our goods and the price, we don’t ex
pect your trade.
You are cordially invited to come at
once and inspect our handsome stock.
We think our 5 and 10 cent counters
will prove a revelation to you.
