The Prison CommissionSHas About Come to a De cision AS TO PENITENTIARY SITE, It Will Be Made Public this Week and Some Point Near Macon Stands Best Showing. The "prison commissioners will name the site for the new state prison in the next few days, and it is more than probable that it wii] be either 'Flovilla or Ocmulgee Mills. Alfter making a tour of the state and bearing applications from many localities, the commissioners will now decide on the place where tine convicts will be placed and the anonuncement will probably be made before the present week is ou> “Os course we can’t discuss the matter publicly.” said Commiasioner Turner yes terday afternoon. “All that we can say is that we have fully investigated the matter and have visited many localities in the state. We have about reached a decision and the nsult of our investigations and deliberations will be made known in the next few days.” The state prison, where the convicts are to bo concentrated, has been a matter of interest before the public for a long time. I‘t has been agitated again and again and discussed throughout the length and breadth of the state. It was placed with the prison' commissioners and they have authority vested in them to make the se lection. “We have been especially anxious in this matter that we made no mistake, and we have gone about the selection of a camp site slowly, investigating all the applica tions that were placed before us for our consideration by the various competing localities," said Commissioner Turner yes terday. “The camp will go where all the con victs will be assembled and will be the general distributing point. There will be also placed the women and the children under fifteen years of age. The-., women convicts of the state are now under the management of Colonel Maddox, at Heard mont, but his lease expires next April and the state will take them back, placing them at the general prison camp. There has been sharp competition between the several localities that asked for the camp. We will purchase about 3,000 areres of land and will improve the place, expending quite a large amount of money.” MOZLEY’S LEMON ELIXIR. THIRD GEORGIA Probability is that it Will Go With Lee to Cuba. Cramer, of the Constitution, writing from Jacksonville on the future of the Third regiment says: "So tar as I could learn today, the only doubt as to the future of the Third Geor gia regiment arises from a difference of opinion as to whether or not it is best, under existing circumstances, to send them to Jacksonville. They have already been assigned to General Lee's command and are a part of the Seventh corps, but in the interest of economy the war depart ment may decide to let them remain in Griffin until the army of occupation starts for Cuba and then to send them direct to Savannah or to Charleston for embarka tion. At either one or both of these (points some transports will be loaded, and the Third is likely to break its camp only to get on board of one the government’s chartered vessels. “I asked General Lee today about the Georgia boys and he said he bad received no orders as to their disposition. “ ‘But I understand they are going to go with me to Cuba,” he said, “and I am glad of it. Several 'people who have seen the regiment have made most complimentary reports to me in regard to it. and I under stand it is made up of just the sort of men we will need. We are not going to have any trouble in Cuba when we land, or for a while afterwards, 'but there are so many complications threatening that we should have the very best the country has before we get through. I have been officially in formed that the Third Georgia, is assigned to me. and a couple of weeks ago I re ceived a letter from Colonel Candler say ing he was ready to start for Jacksonvelle, but since then I have not had any commu nication from Washington or from him on the subject.” “ ‘Have you found a ! camping place for them in the event that they should come?” I asked. “ ‘Not yet. but you can say to them for me that we’ll give them the best we’ve got, and that is saying a good deal. I wish I had more information to give you, but I really know less about the situation than you do.’ ” This was as far as I could go, but even this much means that the Third is to be a part of Lee’s invading force, and all Georgia should be proud that so fine a reg iment is going to have so magnificent a commander. Their Untiring Efforts in Getting Ammu nition and Rations to the Front Saved the It ay. P. E. Butler, of pack train No. 3, writing from Santiago de Cuba, on July 23d, says: “We all had diarrhoea in more or less violent form, and when we landed we had no time to see a doctor, for it was a case of rush and rush night and day to keep the troops supplied with ammunition and rations, but thanks to Chamberlain's Colic Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy, we were able to keep at work and keep our health; in fact, I sincerely believe at one critical time this medicine was the indirect sav iour of our army, for if the packers had been unable to work there would have been no way of getting supplies to the front. There were no roads that a wagon train could use.. My comrade and myself had the good fortune to lay in a supply of this medicine for our pack train before we left Tampa, and I know in four cases it saved life.” The above letter was written to he man ufacturers of this medicine, the Chamber lain Medicine Co., Des Moines, lowa. What it Costs to Settle the Terms bp Means of Rep resentatives at Paris. Sept. 29.—The peace com missioners do not work for a dollar a day So are .their secretaries and attaches. Those distinguished gentlemen who are now in Paris will not need pocket money. They are to lack nothing to adequately maintain their official position, and evei the messengers are tn be given liberal al lowances for their personal expenses Funds to the amount of $250,000, it is un derstood. have been deposited to the credii of Judge Day in one of the Paris banks: and he has unlimited authority to draw more if that is not sufficient. Despite .the fact that to some extent, tt least, the peace commissioners will be th« guests of the French government, it is ex ■peeled that it will cost the United States a quarter of a milion doiars to negotiate I the treaty of peace with Spain. The Frenci government has placed the celebrated Sz- 1 lon des Ambassaduers at the disposal «f the commission, as a place in which to hold their meetings. This courtesy has relieved the commission of one item of ex pense. Despite this, however, it is 'said that the expenses of the commissioners and their staff will amount to something over SI,OOO a day during their stay in Paris. •Because most of the members of tie commission are already in the govern ment's service, they will get no additional salaries for their work with the commis sion. Thus, Commissioners Davis, Frye and Gray, who are drawing salaries as United States senators, will not receive any additional compensation 'beyond the pay ment of their daily expenses. The same is true of all the minor attaches, each of Whom is employed in one ot the departments in Washington, and whose regulars salaries are continued during theii absence on this mission. The only men attached to the commis sion who will receive salaries for their services are Judge Day, the chairman ot the commission, Whitelaw Reid and Mr. Moore, iwho resigned bus place as assistant secretary of state to accompany the com mission as its secretary and counselor. It is expected that Commissioners Day and Reid will be given a fee of $25,000 each for their work on the commission, and that Secretary Moore, upon whom much of tire work of preparaing the documents in the American ease has devolved, will receive t fee of $20,000. Mr. Corbin, son of Adju tant General Corbin, who accompanies the commission as an attache, will probably get $1,500 as a recompense for his services. The American government is paying 'the expenses of the ladies "who are members of the party, and tit is calculated that the item of transportation alone for the thirty five persons in the party by sea and rail, will amount to at least $25,000. The spe cial expenses of the commission in Paris for entertainments, etc., will probably be not less than $15,000 or $20,000. Taking into consideration the salaries that will have to 'be paid to persons who take the places of the attaches of the com mission during their absence from Wash ington, .it will be seen, therefore, that a quarter of a million dollars will scarcely foot the bill.
