Friend ‘ n\
will do for every woman what it did for the
Minnesota mother who writes the above let
ter. Not to use it during pregnancy is a
mistake to be paid for in pain and suffering.
Mother's Friend equips the patient with a
strong body and clear intellect, which in
turn are imparted to the child. It relaxes
the muscles and allows them to expand. Il
relieves morning sickness and nervousness.
It puts all the organs concerned in perfect
condition for the final hour, so that the actual
labor is short and practically painless. Dan
ger of rising or hard breasts is altogether
avoided, and recovery is merely a matter ol
a few days.

CAPT. BENNETT
ON THE CARNIVAL.
He Tells the People of Athens
that It Will Be a Big
Success,
Here's what an Athens man has to say
about the Carnival. The following is
taken from the Athens Banner:
"Why don't you fellows say something
about the big Carnival celebration in Ma
con, on the 11th. 12th, 13th and 14th,” said
Captain Wiley Burnett to a Banner re
porter on the street car yeatenday.
"You are evidently not a close reader of
the Banner, Colonel,” answered the re
porter byway of getting even "we have
been boosting the Carnival along In almost
every issue.”
"Oh I don’t mean that. I mean why
don’t you say that its the biggest thing of
its kind ever held in the South."
"Is that right Captain?"
''Unquestionably. Macon will celebrate
the 75th anniversary of her foundation in
a maiunr that will surpass any similar
celebration ever held in the South. The
very lowest rates on all railroads have
been secured, and the program arranged
will afford enjoyment for thousands. Its
a big thing, I tell you.” concluded Captain
Burnett as he stepped from the car, “and
every man, woman and child in the state
should take it in."
DEPUTY NELSON
Has Resigned the Office of Collector in this
District.
Deputy Collector Nelson has resigned.
He sent in his resignation several dajis
ago. He baa held the office about a year
and has made an excellent official. The
work of late has been very hard on acount
of the immense sale of revenue stamps and
was very confining to Mr. Nelson who was
in bad health.
No successor has yet been appointed, but
it is probable that an appointment will be
made in the next few days. At present the
office is filled by Deputy 'Vlgal.

And When Conductor Tried
to Put Him Off He As
saulted Him.
Special to The News.
Augusta, Oct. 3—-Saturday afternoon
the passengers on the incoming Central
train were very much excited over an as
sault made by an unknown negro upon
Captain Bell, conductor of the train.
Just before Alien's Station was reached
Captain Bell discover a negro beating his
way on the trucks of a passenger coach.
When the train stopped the conductor
attempted to take the negro into custody,
as it is a misdemeanor to beat the rail
roads in this manner.
The negro ,a big strapping fellow, re
sisted Captain Bell, and assaulted him.
The gentleman was hit several times in
the face and sustained painful bruises.
The negro ran and Captain Bell follow
ed. with the flagman. Several passengers
armed themselves and joined in the pur
suit.
When Yellow lake, which Is near Al
len's Station was reached, five shots were
fired at the retreating negro. These did
not stop him and he ran into the swamp
surrounding the lake.
The‘flagman of the train stated that the
negro reached down and caught his leg as
the fifth shot was fired.
The pursuers attempted to keep within
sight of the negro, but they were unsuc
cessful. as he was lost in the thick growth
of the swamp. •
The negro assaulted Captain Bell in
order to escape, but ,would have done al
most anything in order to accomplish his
purpose. He was badly scared.
A description of the negro was furnished
the residents in the vicinity of Allen's
Station, and no doubt he will be captured
and punished for the two offenses.

WHITE MAN'S PARTY
For Republicans in Georgia, but Belcher is
Hanson on That.
A special to the Savannah Morning News
from Brunswick says:
A queer political story reached the
Morning News correspondent’s ears yes
terday. and if the facts are correctly stated
the brother in black will be. after all. the
great loser from the fight now being made
in the Eleventh district by Candidate Wil
kinson and Major Hanson of the Republi
can party. It seems that as the story goes,
the doughty white major of Bibb county
has never given up the idea that the Re
publican party of Georgia could be made
a white man’s party. While it is true that
Eugene Belcher, the smooth colored poli
tician o' Giynn, has so far downed the
major with the administration and has
convinced Mark Hanna and others that he
is correct, to the extent of getting himself
a |1,600 a year job in the Brunswick cus
tom house against the major's wishes, the
major is dead game, and. in addition to
that, knows a trick or two in politics him
self.
Ihe story now goes that the major is
preparing to floor Belcher by electing Wil
kinson to succeed Brantley and convince
Hanna that if it had not been for his
speeches and the white man’s vote, Wil-
kinson would never have landed. He is
said to have carefully figured that if Wil
kinson should be snowed under, as he will
most assuredly be, it will still be possible
to make such a show that Hanna will
think he is yet something in Georgia poli
tics.
Belcher and his friends, however, are
said to have got onto the alleged game of
the major and is going to give Hanson the
greatest fall down of his lite. It is even
now whispered that the slip up Hanson,
Milliken and Wilkinson made yesterday in
coming to Brunswick and finding no
speaking arranged for them, was just a
little by play of Belcher’s, who wanted to
show the boys how easy he could turn the
lily whites down.
Belcher states otherwise, but he has a
long head in politics, and when his control
Is taken away from him down in this dis
trict he feels sure Hanna will know the
reason why.

Meeting this Afternoon to
Make the Arrangements
and Begin Drill.
The teachers and school children will
meet this afternoon at the Whittle school
with the Living Flag committee and will
begin work at once getting in shape for
the exercises. Every child in the city is
Invited to be present and the parents of
the children are especially urged to send
their children to the meeting this after
noon as it is necessary to have as many
children present as possible.
The stand on which the exercises
be held has already been built and when
filled with a thousand children dressed In
different colors it will form a pretty scene.
The teachers will be in charge o-f the ex
ercises and they will teach the children
the different evolutions, which are said to
be very easy.
The children will form a Confederate
flag and then the flag of the United States.
The costumes of the children can be pro
cured at a very low cost. It will 'take at
least 1,200 children for the flag and the
committee hopes that at least that many
will be at the Whittle school this afternoon
at. 3:30 o'clock.
Deafness Can Be Cured.
by local applications, a« they cannot reach
the diseased portion of the ear. There is
only one way to cure deafness and that
is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is
caused by an 'inflamed condition of the
raucous lining of the Eustachian Tube.
When this tube is inflamed you have a
rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and
when it is entirely closed deafness is the
result and unless the inflamation can be
taken out and this tube restored to its
normal condition, hearing will be de
stroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are
caused by catarrh, which is nothing but
an Inflamed condition of the mucous sur

Al Field—Packed House—Thousand Laughs
—All Artists—Grand Time.
■Minstrelsy is not of the past. It is in
the heyday of its power to entertain. This
Is a fact made evident at the Opera House
last night by the splendid performance of
the Al. G. Field Minstrels. It was a pot
pouri of fine music, excellent dancing and.
the most modern and entertaining special
ties. There were familiar faces, Tommie
iDonraelly and Dan Quinlan, for instance,
and there were many new ones. Each man
was a (barrel of fun or art.
The opening scene represented the Arc de
Trlomphs at the Champs Elysees in Paris
with street lamps lighted. The minstrels,
some in (French court costume, others in
crimson satin with blackened faces, the
combination a scintillation of brilliancy,
waved the flags of all nations while the
■best minstrel band ever heard in Birming
ham played stirring airs. As the music
went on representatives of different na
tions were introduced, the last being a
Spaniard, who sneaked off the stage amid
the jeers of the audience, his discarded hat
and flag being swept into the dust pan and
east out after him. Then Tommie Donnel
lyeaughtthe house in "I Want My Lu Lu,”
Arthur Rigby scored a triumph in “I Love
Nobody but You,” and side-splitting jokes,
excellent dancing and fine music came so
thick and fast that the diaphragm of the
audience could scarecely keep pace with
the calls upon its activity.
In part two the juggler, Everhart, did
■wonderful things with bails, hoops and
boxes; Gruett, Beers and Gruett convlus
ed the audience in their grotesque athletic
act; Field was the hero of an amusing
camp life scene in. Cuba; Lelliott, Busch
ami Elliott delighted the house with a mu
sical melange; Arthur Rigby "monologued”
as only he and George Wilson can; the fa
mous Faust family gave the best athletic

MACON NEWS TUESDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 4 1898.
PLEA FOR A MEAT DIET.
Observation* and Argmurnti nf an
Eniriiah Phyalcian on the Snhjeet.
Should man be carnivorous or herbivo
rous? That is a long debated question,
which goes back at least to the days of
Pythagoras. Jean Jacques Rousseau was
a stickler for the vegetable diet exclusive
ly, and He.lvetius was in favor of meat.
Now it appears that a quarrel has broken
out again in England, having been started
by a long and carnivorous report to the
Royal Academy of Medicine by Dr. Vigs
foixi and followed up by the establishment
of a new society of meat eaters.
It is well known that in England the
vegetarians are extremely numerous. They
have made a sort of religion out of their
diet and have built a church of their
own, outside of which, of course, there is
no salvation. The London society of vege
tarians has 4,000 members. It was doubt
less their excessive zeal that brought about
a rcactio! induced the ro;ist ix-es eaters
to form tiiumseives into a regular s<Mjiety.
Aecortling to Dr. Vigsford, there is lit
tle or no truth in the:g doctrine, and his
new plea for meat is ofced upon curious
observations.
For several days he experimented on
sparrows. He gave them absolutely noth
ing to eat at first and then gate to one
half the number meat and to the others
grain. The former digested the meat and
recovered; the others could not assimilate
tho grain and died. Renewing the experi
ments of William Edwards, Starck and
Haller, ho found in his own case, by means
of a dynamometer, that his muscular
strength Increased in constant proportion
by following entirely a meat diet.
Finally he brings out evidence that ho
considers extremely important. During
the time when the railroad from Paris to
Rouen was being built French and Eng
lish workmen were employed. The latter
worked very much more rapidly than the
French. They gained at least one-third
upon tho French workmen. Tho engineers
then determined to put the Frenchmen
upon the same diet as the Englishmen.
They substituted roast beef for bouille and
soup, and at the end of a few weeks the
work done by the two gangs was exactly
equal.
Dr. Vlgsford concludes by saying that
the animal diet Is not only preferable to
tho vegetable, but that, taken In a reason
able quantity, one can exclude all other
kinds of food with an immense advantage
to health.
Although supported by observations and
experiments, this latter principle will ap
pear doubtless somewhat exaggerated to
those who are not in the fight and who
perhaps will be wise in holding fast to the
precepts of their fathers and eating both
vegetables and meat. Man is omnivorous,
as Buffon said.—Paris Cor. Courrier des
Etats Unis.

A Great Success
The Opening at the
NEWMAN MILLINERI CO
Though the weather has been warm our sales were
quite large during our Opening, and the many praises we
received tor our elegant display was quite flattering. This
is but a forerunner of what we intend to do during the
season. We shall endeave to have always the very latest
styles as soon as they appear in the metropolis, and our
prices will be as usual —the lowest.
We have a full line of Fascinators, Infants’ Sacques
and a big line of Infants’ Caps.
We would advise ladies wishing to get Hats ready for
the Carnival not to wait too long, as we have a good many
orders already on hand and would not like to disappoint our
customers.
