Being Done at the College —Associ-
ation is Invaluable—Opportuni
ty for Debaters.
Mercer University opened a little more
than one week ago with a larger attend
ance than any previous year. The tdrm of
’hi marked the high water mark of the
institution until the record of *ys surpass
ed it. In comparison with dll other years
this one has brighter prospects and more
substantial hope for a most successful
term.
Mercer ha? and is enjoying ■ a more
marked success than any Southern college.
Her victories wire won on almost every
field cf effort of educational in
stitutions. In athletics she holds
the Southern championship. In or
atory she cot only represents
Georgia bu' the South. Many things 0?
importance have been aded to the col
lege during the summer vacation by iMer
cc-r's friend- through the aid cf Dr. Pol
lock. Among these is the well equipped
Young .Mm’- Christian Association hall.
This association is doing a valuable work
here at Mercer. Her representatives to
the summer conference have already ac
complish* J a marvelous work through the
forces of this, association.
The college will soon have a splendid
gymnasium, an addition much needed, and
when thU department is completed the col
lege can .'ay more claim still upon her in
ducements held out to the young men of
the South.
More places for young men seeking col
lege honors have been created this year.
Hereafter Lec-'s birthday will be cele
brated by the students and faculty, and
the college's friends will enjoy the pleas
ure of a spring term debate.
Those additional occasions will increase
the possibility cf all young men aspiring
to cminer.; positions in this noble field of
college rivalry.
The State University's (proposition for
another joint debate will take place in At
lanta between now and Christmas holidays
has already been accepted with a possible
extension cf the time limit.
The student body elected on Saturday
Mr. Doubling, of Gordon county. H. Law
son, of Pulaski, and AY. F. George, of
Dooly, ns her representatives in this de
bate. These young men are thoroughly
representative cf this institution, so rich
in laurels of intellectual contests.
The state oratorical contest will come off
in Atlanta on October 21st. Mr.., A. J.
Moncrief is the contestant from iMercer,
and her men are sanguine enough to again
invade Atlanta in anticipation of another
victory.

STREET WORK
Is Being Pushed in Preparation Fcr the
Carnival.
Macon’s streets are being put in good
condition by a large force of hands, who
are now busily engaged. The street sweep
ing machines are used at night and dur
ing the day the city forces remove the de
bris and trash from the streets. Some por
tions of the city are very much in need of
a cleaning, as much trash has accumulated.
Cherry street, which was finished a few
days ago, is beyound a doubt the prettiest
otree-t in -the city and is one of \\'hich the
city can boast.
The- city forces were kept busy for sev
eral days this week removing the fallen
iroes which were blown down Sunday night
during the storm. All of trees have
been cleared off. however, and Chairman
Ellis eavs that the city will present a very
neat appearance by the time the Carnival
conns off.
No barrels or boxes will be allowed on
the streets while the carnival is on and
everything will be kept as clean as pos
sible. Macon has some of the prettiest
streets of any town in the -country and
•they are sure to draw favorable comment
from the visitors.

SICK MOVED.
Dr. Garrard Has Sent Them to the City
Horpital.
The sick soldiers who have been at
Camp Price were carried to the hospital on
Wednesday for treatment account of the
wet condition of the ground.
Two of the soldiers are ill with typhoid
fever and one with penumonia. 'Major
Garrard, the surgeon, says that the men
are all right and will be out of danger in a
few Jays. They are all convalescent but
are still subject to a relapse.
They are receiving good treatment at the
hospital and if they do not suffer a relapse
they will be discharged in a few days.
There are at present about sixty men in
camp to guard the government property.
The tents which were blown down Sunday
night have all been put up again and the
camp is in very g-ood condition. The river
is up, however, and some parts cf the park
are flooded, which makes it unpleasant for
the men in camp.
The men have to do regular guard duty,
but the. discipline" is not so strict.
They all seem to enjoy being in camp
very much and so far no dissatisfaction has
been expressed.
