The Elks are increasing in membership every week and many applications are now on file to be acted upon. The Elks now have the prettiest apait ments of any club in tbe South, the fur nishings alone costing $6,000. The Elks are on a firm footing and every member is deeply interested in the organization. MACOrt SATURDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 8 1898 FIFTEEN HUNDRED PRESENT At the Livir.g’Flag Drill Yesterday After noon. The Living Flag drill yesterday after noon wis a great success. Fully fifteen hundred children were present and about an hour was spent in drilling the children. Al of the children present took great in terest in the drilling and seemed to enjoy it very much. They were also given in i structKxns aout the costumes they were to wear. The boys are all to be dressed in red and tbe girls are to wear white with j rhe exception of those who are to form j the blue field fcr the stars. The flag has ’ attrarcted attention throughout the coun ■ try and many people are coming purposely to see it. The different evolutions were taught ves , terday afternoon by the teachers. The drill is very pretty and will no doubt draw forth great applause when it takes place. WILL GET HOLIDAY, _ _ : But the Board of Education Declines to Talk. j The Board of Education held a special j meeting yesterday afternoon in the office l of Superintendent Abbott. The object of i the meeting was to decide about giving I the children holiday. All c f rh e members of the board were present, and after some discussion of the matter the board ad journed. They decided not to give out the decision and informed 'the children that I they would be informed what to do Monday ; morning. ( It was impossible to find out what the decision was as none of the members of the board would talk. It is thought, how ever, that the children will be given hol iday, as one of the members of the board was a<sked if the children would be kept in ] school all the week <ftid he replied that he could not say, which goes to show that i they will at least be given two days holi | day. All the parents of the children are | anxious for them'to be given holiday as ; they wish them to see the Carnival. DIAMOND JUBILEE CARNIVAL Macon, Ga.. October 11. 12, 13 and .14.
