NEW TRANSPORTS.
• -
«
Big Fleet Will Soon Be Ready
on Pacific.
By Associated Press.
San Francisco, Oct." 10.—The new fleet of
trarnaports is rapidly being prepared for
service. The Newport has not yet arrived,
but is -expected at any hour.
The Senator will come oft the Union Iron
Dry docks tomorrow and the Valencia will
take her place. The Ohio will go on the
dry dock today and as soon as she has been
overhauled the Indiana will take her place.
The latter vessel went direct to the quar
antine station and will be fumigated before
she goes on the dry dock. The Newport
will follow the Valencia at -the dock and
an effort will be made to get all of the
four vessels away next week. lif <hey can
be fitted out in time they will leave in a
bunch. If not, the Senator will sail next
Sunday and the others will follow as soon
they are ready.
General Merriam has called on General
Miller for the complete field returns of all
the (troops in his command. This he did
for the purpose of seeing how to best se
lect commands to go on the different trans
ports. They have to be chc-s-en with regard
'to 'the capacity of the vessel.' and an effort
will be made not to overcrowd any of the
transports.
General Merriam has been informed that
The transport Peru sailed from Manila on
Saturday.
GOLF TOURNAMENT
For the Championship of the United States
at Adesiy.
By Associated Press.
New York. Get. 10. —Everything is in
readiness at the Ardsley club for the wo
man’s golf championship tournament of
the United States, which will begin to
morrow morning at a cuarter past 9
o’clock and continue through Friday.
The United States Golf Association has
made the drawings of the competitors and
fixed this starting time for the first pair
at the hotir as given. The players will
follow each other at intervals of six min
utes’, the last pair getting off the first tee
at a quarter .past 12 o’clock. Os course
there may be a few withdrawals so that
the time may be somewhat shortened, but
there is ample time to finish long before
dark, even if there should be considerable
delay.
There are in all sixty-one entries. From
this number the eight who turn in the
lowest score in the contest tomorrow will
be the Qualifying competitors for cham
pionship honors, which will be continued
at match play on the three following days.
The accessibility of the Ardsley links
and their proximity to the clubs have un
doubtedly contributed to the large num
ber of entries. A review of the names
shows that at least twenty have practically
no claim to be regarded as even would-be
champions, but they have probably gone
in for the sport of the thing and they will
keep interesting the handicap arranged for
the foliowins days for those who fail to
get in the eligible list of eight.
MILLER RETIRES.
Rear Admiral Warns People
Against Honolulu.
San Francisco, Oct. 10. —Rear Admiral
Miller, who will retire (from the navy on
October 15th, says thait he will stop -at his
old home in Ohio on his way cask, but will
■probably reside part of the time in San
Francisco. He warns people against going
so Honolulu in the expectation of making
their fortunes. Be says:
“The simple fact that ithe form of a
government is going to change has not
opened up additional resources. There are
no new positions for people who go.in and
there are not likely -to be any.’’
The admiral, however, thinks there is a
great future in store for the islands. He
will turn his flagship, the Philadelphia,
over to Commodore Keutz, who will suc
ceed him on the Pacific station. After be
ing overhauled at the Mare Island navy
yard, the cruiser will probably be sent to
either Honolulu or Somoa.
