STUART IN 1492.1 *
Wi;l Be the Attraction atithe Academy on
fridiy Night.
We are glad to see that clever Ssprano
“Stuart, the male Patti,” and a host cf
favoritca in the new “1452.” at the
Academy next Saturday. The company
opened their season in Easton and the
Boston Globe of Sept. 13 says: “t is always
pleasant to see old friends again, no mat
ter how changed they may be, and so the
old ”141-2" as given at the Grand Opera
House last evening, with Stuart as "the
daisy queen,” will undoubtedly be greet
ed by many admirers of the old piece
duTtng the coming week. There is much
to praise and little to criticise in this new
version of “1492,” and although the piece
as it. is now given bears but little resem
blance to the one played long ago by the
cadets, it is in general a pleasing perform
ance.
A number of the characters and scenes
have beta entirely changed, and while the
piece tail has a connected, story a large
portion of the book has been <?ui to give
room far specialties. In many cases this
is a great improvement. ? noticeably good
feature was the singing, which witnout
exception was of a high standard.
In this production Stuart, who is billed
as “the male Patti,” is featured as Isabel
la, and he made a complete success of the
part. He has an excellent, soprano voice
and as a female impersonator is very clev
er. He was applauded after every song,
and In the second act was presented with
a large horseshoe of flowers. Next to the
star came Nttll McNeil, as Ferdinand, and
afterward rhe tramp. He was the particu
larly bright fun maker whenever he was
on the stage. Mr. Terry, wao imperson
ates the royAl treasurer, made one of the
hits of the shew bj his (lancing.
In the second act dancing was executed
by Johnny Dougherty, while Miss Madge
Davenport sang a coon song quite cleverly.
In this same act the Trocadero quartet,
Messrs. Pi jseau. Lcmier, B irnes and
Sampler sang a numebr of balads and coon
songs very sweetly. Stuart gave the act
which made him famous on the vaudeville
stage, and the scene terminated in a pa
triotic finale, which was quite novel and
•pretty.'
The last act was almost all new .and
served to gather the strands of the play
together and make a happy ending. Os the
minor parts the work of Miss Thompson,
as Bridget de Murphy, deserves especial
praise, and Miss Kent sang sweetly, as the
Iqvelor n Joanna. In the chorus were a
number of pretty girls in tasty costumes
and the scenery was all new and beautiful.
