RECENT RISING
OF REDSKINS.
General Bacon Praises Work
of Soldiers Who Fought
With Him.
INDIANS HOE HAD ENOUGH
But They Are a Dangerous Foe, and
a General Insurrection Was
Only Narrowly Averted.
4
By Associated Press.
Chicago, Nov. 3. —As an abstraxtt propo
sition the Indians want no more fighting. ,
They have had enought to last for some >
time in the Bear Lake campaign just
over. However, the Indian character is
such that one may never tell when he ’
will take up his arms and wage a desul- I
tery warfare against local communities.
This was the answer General John M.
Bacon, the veteran Indian fighter, who |
<omman<!4l the United States troops in ,
the recent Indian outbreak in Minnesota, I
gave to a question as to the present feel- I
ing of the Red men. General Bacon, who
is temporarily in command of the depart- i
rnent of the lakes and the department of
the northwest, with headquarters in St.
Paul, is in Chicago on official business.
“I want to say one word,” continued '
General Bacon, “about the so-called ‘raw .
recruit.’ Out of the seventy-seven men |
who were with me in the battle of Octo- I
ber sth, fifiy-eightt were enlisted during I
the middle of last summer, but their con
duct was admirable.
“It is no .5 o'clock tea affair to fight the
Indian today, any more than it was in the
old days of Indian warfare. The war
painted Indian of today is the same cruel
and treacherous foe of the plains of years
ago. He is not in battle to be killed—
such an idea is unpleasant to him. He is
in it to kill the other fellow in any way
he can.
"Had it not been for that engagement
coming. as It did and resulting as it did,
the Indians of other tribes would undoubt
edly have joined with the rebellious ones
and formed .1 force which It would have
co-: a great loss of life to suppress.
“These Indians had been accumulating
arms and ammunition for a long time.
They were just aching for a fight. Their
brother red men were in sympathy with
them and had the batle not gone our way,
the Winuebagos, Red Lake, Cass Lake and
other tribes would have reinforced the
Bears and formed a most formidable and
dangerous foe.”

THE SMALLEST TRUNK.
Ever Seen Will Soon Be in the City.
Probably the smallest practical trunk
I ever carried is the property of one of the
members of Professor Gentry’s famous
1 dog and pony show, which will exhibit
under canvass in this city on the English
lot. Poplar street, near First, Monday and
Tuesday, Nov. 7th and Sth, at 2:30 and 8
p. m. , •
The member in question is Pinto, the
tiniest elephant in the world, which is
scarcely as large as an ordinary pony. He
is a trifle over four feet .high, twenty
seven years old. and said to be the best
trained elephant in all the land. Profes
soir Gentry imported Pinto from India last
winter at an enormous cost. He is much
more valuable than an ordinary elephant
because of his diminutiveness. Pinto pos
sesses a superb disposition and is a great
friend of the children, who will all have
the opportunity of having a ride on 'him
and getting thoroughly acquainted during
the show's stay in this city. In addition to
Pinto, many other novelties have been
added to the already excellent perform
ance. The prices of admission are as
usual, children 15 cents and adults 25
cento. ... «-4ia

BLACK CLOTH AUTUMN COSTUME FROM HARPER’S BAZAR
A new gown of light weight c’oth in
now to stylish is rendered very striking
by the adition of a fancifully cut velvet
vest in copper color, over which falls front
and back a fine pleating of shaded taffeta
silk in lighter tones.
The close fitting coat shaped bodice,
which promises to be one of the distin
guishing features of the season, rounds
■down, from the shoulder to under the arm
like a bolero, which is also edged with
the finely pleated frill. The coat opens at
the neck on a square plastron and a great
cravat bow of coppery tinted mull, and
is fastened between the ruffles of the bo
lero frone with gald rimmed opal buttons.
The eoat is cut ,so form tiny epaulettes
over tbe sleeves and the divisions of the
open back beliw the waist are caught to
gether by the same linked buttons, while
■the narrow pointed girdle is attached in
front with similar jewelled buttons. A
shaped collar finishes the neck, since a
coat or waist without a very high collar
