MILITARY SPIRIT MIL Crowps Along the Line Displayed Great Enthusiasm Over Ameri can Airs and Flags. By Associated Press. London, Nov. 9. —Notwithstanding the fact that the annual Lord Mayor’s show has long been the object of good-natured ridicule on the part of all sober-binded people, the time-honored pageant contln uw as STeat an attraction as ever for the masses as was strikingly exemplified today upon the induction into office of the new Lord Mayor., Sir John Voce Moore. A large force of Metropolitan was found necessary to keep in check the immense crowds which lined the route of the pro cession. The line of march was considera bly shorter than usual. Leaving the Guild hall yard, the procession proceeded along Graham streeet and Princes street, and thence across the space in front of the Mansion House into King Wiliam street. Stopping short of London bridge, the pro cession tourned and repassed the business premises occupied hy the big firm of Moore (Brothers, of which the new Lord Mayor is a member. The return was made as usual byway of the Victorian Embank ment. A stirring evidence of the military spirit now rampant among all classes was shown by the wildly enthusiastic applause with which the troops and the floats illus trating Lord Kitchener’s victory in the Soudan were greeted all along the route. Another spectacular feature which came in for applause was the float allegorically representing the much discussed Anglo- Saxon union, Brittania and Columbia, the central figures being surrounded by the British colonies. At the law courts Sir Faudel Philips, the retiring Lord Mayor, extended greet ings to hie successor, who, attired in full civic robes preceded by the recorder and attended by the sheriffs, the mace bearr, sword bearer, and other civic functionaries proceeded to the court of the lord chief justice, where he was received by the jus tices attired in scarlet robes and cocked hats. There the usual prescribed courte sies were exchanged, following which the procession wended its way to the court of appeals to be received by the master of the rolls and the appeal judges. The return to the Guildhall was via the (Strand, Charing Cross, the Victoria Em bankment and Queen Victoria street. Thia portion of the route was elaborately decor ated with flags, bunting and Venetian masts from many of which floated the Stars and Stripes. Another noticeable fact was the enthusiasm displayed by the crowds whenever the bands played the popular lAmerican airs. Considerable re gret is expressed in official circles that the United States has no ambassador in England to speak at the Guildhall banquet this evening. Lord Mayor Moore is the head of the great tea firm of Moore 'Bros., and has been in public life since 1870, when he en tered the common council. He was sheriff of London in 1804. and in that year was raised to the knighthood for his dis tinguished for his distinguished services in connection with the Tower Bridge. During his term as Lord Mayor, his daughter, Mrs. John King-Farlow, will act. as mayoress, as Sir John himself is a widower. Although he hhs already passed the allotted three score and ten years of life, he is hale and hearty and is thor oughly capable of giving the great me tropolis a sound administration as its chief officer. , GLORIOUS NEWS. London, Nov. 9. —Throughout England, Scotland and Wales, and in the loyal sec tions of Ireland, the bells are ringing merrily today and flags are fluttering in the breeze tn celebration of the fifty seventh birthday of the Prince of Wales. His Royal Highness, because of hia physicians' orders is not spending the day in town, and as a consequence, was com pelled to forego his customary visit to ths Army and Navy Club. Instead, he is spending the day quietly at Sandringham, 'where there is a grand family reunion. The Princess of Wales is back from Co penhagen. The. Princess Charles of Den mark returned ■with her, the Duchess of Fife joined the family party and the Duke and Duchess of Yorok and their children were also among those present. In the telegrams of congratulation that poured in upon the Prince of Wales this rnoming. all the crowned heads of Europe, President Fa lire, of the French Republic, and the numerous ambassadors of Great ‘Brditain to the foreign powers, were repre sented. The government signalized today the anniversary of the birthday by putting in operation the new imperial penny postage. The new regulations provide for the in troduction of 2-cent postage between the different portions of the British empire, and another result is the reduction in the Canadian postal rate from three to two cents. It is thought that the reduction will cause a big deficit in the receipts qf the postoffice department, but thte is to be partially offset by the reimposition of postage on newspapers, which are now carried tree. , -T 5 BnckllnO Arxw« Salve The best salve In the world tor cuts, bruises, sores, ulcers, salt rheum, tew«r sotbs, tetter, chapped hands, chilblains, corns, iutd all skin eruptions, and posi tively curee piles or no pay required. So many of the officers seem to regard it as something which they are at liberty to give away. Baltimore has dedicated with appropri ate exercises a 0 jnch Nordenfeldt gun. placed in front of the city halt This gun was taken from the flagship of the Spanish admiral at Manila and was presented to the city by Captain Dyer of the Balti more, but it is maintained here that the captain had no right to give the gun away The department will, however avoid taking official notice of the transac tion. if possible, and will assume that the presentation was made before the captain received a copy of the circular issued some time ago calling particular attention to the matter. But the department has had many other cases to deal with. One returning lieu tenant whisjierpd to his friends that he had a beautiful parlor ornament in the shape of an enormous flag captured from one of the Spanish ships This the depart ment got wind of and promptly ordered its delivery to the governtnent. The law has been entirelyexplic.it on this question, but people nid tirully jump to the conclu sion that trophies of this sort are the prop erty of whoever comes first.—St. Louis Globe-Democrat, A TEXAS WONDER. Taft, an assistant ininlsti rof St George’s church, in this city, has t>>« n designated as the first missionary, and sailed for Porto Rico the other day. He will make his head quarters at Ponce and is instructed to care first for the American sick and wounded in the hospitals there and then to minister to whosoever desires his serv ices. No action will be taken by him to ward establishing a church until directed to do so by the board of missions of the church, and until that time he is responsi ble only to Bishop Potter. He speaks Spanish and is an earnest and effective clergyman.—New York Tribune. Spain'* Drydock Will Stay. The naval officers who have visited Ha vana harbor recent-ly have reported that the fine new steel floating drydock, which was purchased by the Spanish govern ment in England and towed to Havana just prior to the outbreak of war, is in such condition that it cannot be moved. Protiably the fact that the dock is in the condition described is the only reason why the Spanish offii ials at Havana have not already made an effort to have the dock toweff to Spain s» it was towed from Eng land to Havana. Washington Star. A Duke nt Eton. The Duchess of Albany is a wise mother aud made special request when she sent her little son to Eton that he should not be treated differently from the other boys, although a prince of the blood royal. Not long since (the British Weekly tells the story) a letter from another boy was pass ed to him in division, and such letters be ing contraband the division master said the duke must hand it to him. He did so, and the amazed master found it ad dressed “To his Royal Foolishness, Dirty Faced Albany.” School Pencils Labeled. Superintendent Kinsburg of the Kane (Pa.) public schools has the germ question down to a fine point. He has directed that the pencils and penholders used by the schools of that town be numbered, and each pupil is given the same pencil or pen holder every time. This Is done to avoid all liability of the children contracting disease from germs which some physicians have claimed is due to the indiscriminate use of pencils and penholders in the school rooms.—Christian Endeavor World FRENCH TANSY - WAFERS These are the genuine French Tansy Wafers, imported direct from Paris.
