Sixth Viiginia is a Close Prisoner as a Whole, and Being Carefully Guarded by the Tenth Immunes, Also a Colored Regiment. NIGHTMARCH Os the Engineers and Ohio Regiments on the Camp of the Negroes, • TOOK Ail. ARMS AWAY. Much Discontent Among the Men of the Regiment Because of the Removal of*the Colored Officers. The whole of the Sixth Virginia regi ment is under arrest and serious trouble has been narrowly averted. The regiment arrived in Macon from Knoxville on Saturday morning and went at once to their camp next to the Tenth Immunes atli Crump's park. A had reputation had preceded the regi ment arising from the fact that they were report, d to be in a state of mutiny weeks ago. They had not. been in the city twelve hours before they fully justified their reputation. Late in the afternoon of Saturday a squad of •tho Sixth made a demonstration at a place near Crump's park where a negro mini, d Singleton was lynched sojne years ago. The tree on which the negro had been hanged was pointed out by some of the local negroes and the men began hacking at it for chips as mementoes. This led to the cutting down of the tree and some people say that a number of shots fired but this is not verified. The crowd then went to Crump’s park where they were stopped by the watchman who refused to allow them on the grounds. They attacked him and took his pistol away from him. Hut the real trouble came later in the night. I Hiring the day some of the mem bers of the Sixth were arrested by the pro vost guard and were taken to the guard house iq the*eity. This was reported at the camp and a plan was organized udder which the provost guard house was to be attacked during the night and the prison ers released. 'Major JOII4I A. Logan, the provost mar shal, was notified of the purpose of the negroes and put on an extra guard of one company from the Engineers. About midnight a squad from his patrol intercepted sixty meftibers of the Sixth Virginia on their way into the city and armed with the rifles loaded with ball. These were arrested and at once marched out to the camp where the provost mar shal hand a conference with Colonel Cook, the commanding officer of the Tenth Im auunes. who is senior colonel and in. com mand of the whole eamp. Another confereifre was held with the commanding officer of the Sixth. The result was that Major Logan reported to General Wilson that the Sixth was on the verge of mutiny and the general ordered out the Third Engineers to surround the camp of the Sixth and disarm the regi ment. This was done at 2 o’clock yesterday morning and a gaurd of the Engineers was ■placed around the whole camp, the sen tries being only ten yards apart. At 12:30 a. m. the Second Ohio tfras also called out ami marched to the camp of the Sixth, arriving there very shortly after the Engineers. The Second Ohio made good time in the march and would have been effective had their been any trouble. The regiment is made up of 780 men and twenty-one officers. The 'men took the march of two and a half miles good hu inoredly and enjoyed the somewhat novel experience. In this way the unique spectacle of a ■whole regiment under arrest is presented in Macon today. General Wilson has wired to the depart ment for instructions how he is to act under the circumstances and it is alto gether probable that the officers of the Sixth will be relieved and that white of ficers will be placed over the •regiment with instructions to discipline it thor oughly. The ringleaders in Saturday night's affair are known and will be harshly dealt with. In fact it is intimated • that it may be necessary for the good of the service to shoot some of the men. The fact of the matter is that the of ficers of the Sixth have completely lost control of their men ami they acknowledge that this is a fact. The whole regiment is today without its arms which are in the • possession of the Third Engineers. The men are sullen and defiant and say that they will not serve under white officers. Some weeks ago nine of the colored of ficers of this regiment were requested to resign on account of incompetence and white officers were appointed in their place. This commenced the trouble and the regiment has been in a smoulder ever since. No one has any fault to find with the Tenth, the other colored regiment. The men are in a fine state of discipline and are under complete control. The officers say that they have no fear of any trouble with their men as a result of the condi tion of the Sixth. In fact the Tenth re lieved the Engineers yesterday on guard duty over the prisoners regiment and it ■will go hard with any who tries to run the lines. Both, of the camps were crowded with visitors yesterday. Fully seven thousand negroes went out to-the camp of the. col- I ored contingent. The Tenth gave a dress j parade and made a good showing. The camps of the. Second Ohio and the j Third Engineers were also a. great at trac j tion. Thousands of people took advantage lof the beautiful Indian summer yveather to go through the camps for the first time. The men are more reconciled today, and say that .Macon is not such a bad place after all. the sunshine has dried things off. General W. W. Gordon arrived in the city last night and this morning took com mand of the First brigade, succeeding General Compton, who resigned some time 11 go. , die is accompanied by his eon, Lieuten ant AV. AV. Gordon, Jr., as his father’s aide de camp. The whole city is magnificently patroled and there is not the slightest fear of any disturbance. Major John A. Logan, who is in command of all the provost, has made himself very popular by his uniform courtesy and his evident desire to demon strate to the people of the city that they will be protected ’in every way. To a News correspondent last night Major Logan said that there need be no fear on the part of the people and that order will be kept at any cost. Soldier Notes in Camp ami City. Major General J. IC. (Bates and aid. Lieu tert ant Reeves (have returned from Knoxville, where they went on important business. The signal corps began work this morn ing putting in a telephone line from ’the camp of the Third engineers and the Sec ,ond Ohio to the camp of tihe Tenth Im munes. The arms belonging to the Sixth Virgi nia, which avas so unruly Saturday night, were brought into the .city this morning. The regiment is still under guard and none of the men are allowed to leave the camp. The leaders are confined at the provost headquarters and will probably be tried by court martial. The provost guard did not make many arrests yesterday and very few prisoners were sent to the camps this morning. General Bates was surprised to hoar of the conduct of tlhe negroes during his ab sence, and it Is his intention to punish them all. Music Lessons—Plano and violin ‘in struction at reasonable prices.
