ABOUT PLAYS
AND PLAYERS.
On Wednesday the Liliputiant will come
i to the Academy of Music, producing their
j new spectacular play, “The Golden Horse
shoe. It has a well- told and clever!v
constructed plot, a series of really exquis
ite (ballets, fine scenery, most gorgeous cos
tumes and most amusing fun, which is so
deftly commingled that the spectators,
both young and old, are constantly inter
ested and highly amused. “The Golden
Horseshoe” gives to the leading come
dians, Franz Ebert, Adolf Zink, Selma
Goerner and all the other Liliputians ex
cellent parts in Which they can make the
best use of their versatile talents. Zink
and Ebret, as tDick and Bob, are a couple
of roughish imps, who, instead o»f plying
their tradese, are on mischief and advent
ure bent,
They meet a couple of variety actresses
named Eulalie and Tootsie. Os couse the
couples fall straightwa in love with one

another, especially the men who have
heard from their sweethearts that in Kal
amazoo an eccentric old woman has left a
will by which only a person of less than
three feet shall become sole heir to her
fortune. There is a hitch, however, for
there is a codicil in which the old lady
makes it a condition that the heir must
first find a golden horseshoe which she has
hidden away somewhere in a swamp. The
treasure is finally discovered by Tootsie —■
an infinitesimal small the bot
tom of the sea, which she has reaced by
the means of a submarine boat. The Lili
putians are at their best in “The Golden
Horseshoe.”
Ebert is a bubbling humorist, as Adolf
j Zink is an instinctive comedian and Selma
Goerner an inherited soubrette. Although
there is a new comer in the company, little
Miss Lindner, who is several inches small
er than Ebert, still the latter remains en
trenched in the admiration and approval
of his audiences. The end of the second
act, introducting the Liliputians as fa
, mous composers and leaders, arouses im
mense enthuiasm at every performance. All
the little people appear in various disguises
among others as runaway apprentices, me
chanical dummies, transatlantic teurists,
Salvationists, with tambourines, frogs,
j when they sing a capital croaking song,
; mermaids and merfaen and heroes of our
I war with Spain. The spectacular features
j are excellent, and three grand ballets, the
] Pink French Ball, the Musical Festival'
i and the Submarine Dance are extremely
■ beautiful and original.
“The Golden Horseshoe” is by far the
best play ever seen by the Liliputians, and
I will not fail to add thousands of new ad
i miners to their old ones. The engagement
iis only for one night, taking place on
i Wednesday, December 2S.
Barlow Bros. Minstrels will appear at
I she Academy of Music Monday night for
the first time in many years. The'min
strels this year are better than ever be
! fore, and with them are some of the most
I renowned comedians on earth.
) The performance is clean in every re
spect and in every city that rhe show have
visited, they have received much favor
able comment from the press. The troupe
I is one cf the oldest in the country and is
one of the greatest organizations in the
world. The manager of the show, Harry
Ward is one of the clverest minstrels on
the stage. Briggs, the trick bicycle rider
is also with the troupe. He gives his
unique exhibitions of tricks and always
■ pleases the audience.
PRESENT TO
Georgia Will 1 Pay Out $400,000 This
Week For Salaries.
The public school teachers of the state
will get a $400,000 Christmas present, and
it wilt be a welcome remembrance to
them, says the Constitution.
Professor Glenn, the state school com
missioner. was at work yesterday getting
oft the checks to the country superin tend
i ents of education. There are 137 of these
| and in addition about forty checks are
sent to school fund.
The teachers have been anxious to get
their money, which was due them the first
of the present month. State Treasurer
Speer did not have the money in the treas
i ury until December 10th, but as soon as
! the fund was there. Cofiimissioner Glenn
l asked for the checks. He says that the
state treasurer put him off. saying he was
too busy, to make out the checks.
For the past ten days the commissioner
cf education has been hot on the trail of
the state treasurer and yesterday he got
the treasurer's check book and wrote out
: the 137 checks himself.
Professor Glenn has been getting letters
, from all over the state asking him to
hurry up the pay for the teachers. Many
of the 8.300 teachers discount their salary
wi h merchants, business men and far
mers. They have been writing that they
had depended on getting back the money
which they had advanced to the teachers
i for the payment of theif taxes.

>! come back a: once into the treasury as
i taxes.
( j But the tax collectors closed their books
j on Monday, December Ibth, and now the
j delinquents will have to pay the ft. fa.
•The tenor of nearly all the letters I
' have received for the past ten days,” said
1 Professor Glenn yesterday, “was: ‘I am
1 depending on the teachers' pay to pay my
state taxes.' My department is not re
sponsible for the delay in getting off the
; checks. I have urged the state treasurer
ever since December 10th ro let me have
the money so that I coilld send it out over
; the state. I told him that he was keep
i ing 8?100 teachers waiting for their pay
t which they had earned by hard work and
to which they were justly entitled. He
was also keeping many other people wait
ing because the teachers owe their board
and small bills to the merchants. Some
of them had discounted their salary and
•the purchasers were waiting for the state
money so that they could pay their taxes.
Now they will have to pay the fi. fas. 1
i [ wrote out the checks and they will go off
i tonight and tomorrow. I am anxious for
, the teachers to get their money before
i Christmas. It would be a dull Christmas
, for many of them, I fear, if their salary
j did not reach them by Saturday.”
