The Christmas holiday trade has opened Tp in fine style, and the merchants are enjoying a ru«h. Their forces are kept <bu«y waiting on customers, and things are at lively in Macon as they have been in many a long day. Two of the leading retail merchants of •the city were asked yesterday how the trade this year compares with that of last at the corresponding time. “Why,” they eaid, '"there is no comparison. Business is much more lively now than it was ten days before Christmas last year. We are doing a good business, and I suppose the tame is the case with all the merchants in the city. "To what do jou attribute the increased ebusiness?"' "Why, lo the soldiers being here,” was •the answer of both. "You might not think it, but there is many a small gift to be bent home that is bought by a soldier. The boys are thinking of the folks at home, and they don’t hesitate to maj<e their lit •tle purcba«e* to let relatives and friends know they are not forgotten. But that is not /be chief reason for the increased bus iness. It Lg more largely due to the general business activily that has resulted. from ihe soldiers heiYig encamped near the city. Many peqplje have made money from their being here and they are Tdr this reason ; more inclined to spend for Christmas gifts I than usual.” • "This war has been a great thing for the South,” said one of the merchants. "If the troops had not been encarnpt# throughout this section I cannot see what the people would have done. Four-cent rotton is a knotty problem with which to deal. and it is the money that has been t*pent by the soldiers and the government ■that has kept us fronl having: to face it t«s wy should have bad to.” * O AOTOXLXA.
