It takes a very yming .person .to truly ■enjoy the coming of C'*r : -m.a». and the’ measure of youth cannot b»- reckoned by . years either; the entt’uaiasm mint I be in the hear; and Then wrinkles* in- the face don’t matter. There are two nr three testg of this supreme degree of youth, which like charity covereth all things, but the supreme one its negative, ’f you can ; really enjoy being in the same house with ; a large (thristma- horn and a smalt boy : and can smilingly take the co» sequences, then for you agf has no terrors; you m- d took no further than your own hear* for ! the fountain of ptrp?:ual youth. Os course j this does not apply where rhe boy is your ’ own. for then you are apt to take pride an • anything he does. From the Rochester Democrat and Chron- j icle. Probably the idea that a humble red ' brick would ever play any part in electri- ; cal experiments has occurred to few. However, this is'just what a certain lot t of bricks composing a pier at the Rey- . nolds Laboratory did and will continue to ■ do so long as they are within reasonable ' distance of the delicate electrical - instru ments used in the laboratory. A suspi cion that the above contingehcy might ex- St has been in the mind of Prof. Henry , E. Lawrence of the University of Roches- 4 ter for some time past. That it is a re- i |Lality he now feels sure, and the methods , V he used to ’(me to that conclusion are i most interesting. The professor, in ■ ollahoration with Otis A. Gage, a •special student in elec i;y, began a strbs of experiments cov tring 3cm»- months. The performance of magnetometer wnirh was used in measur ing the magnetic pewer of a steel bar was the first cause for suspecting that the . bricks were o.her than v. tat ihtir appear ance wcuid lead one to think. The m? vn# tom.. er b..d rested on a brick pier for the purpose of making it plumb. Not iocg after Prof. Lawrence, while ia Ann . Arbor, beard of a similar 'experience oc- i (♦urting re. Un his return the expert- ' ;tm ;. • went on with mere zeal than ever. Bricks of ali varieties were put. through ; any number of tests, and the great tna- j jot iry were fo”nd to be magnetic. Those mano’acturtd oy water power, kno'tfn as ' “.t jdj aullt-’' bricks, proved to be exceed ingiy strong, one equalling the power of i ii *- «• 1 ne«-He 2.3 c n. imt :re< in length. i Tvi same b.-. k of clay would make no- j i ticeabl? lefleciiona in cvm>paralively crude . instruments, while delicate ones would t.-r perceptibly. One of the brl< ks, a plain white one, hy drauiiicajy press’ 1, possessed no magne tism. A certain amount of lime enters in- | to the compc sition of a white brick, such I • a- was used, and its presence undoubtedly* ' had much to do with the absence of mag- J netic power. It was discovered that the ’ bticke gained magnetism in the presence ; cf a dynamo, though the surrounding of | i :he bricks by wire coils made no percep- ; tibb difference. Heating the bricks served ’ in a measure to decrease the magnetism. ’ ; though in case a minute amount was 1 J rf'.slned. i To iusi wbat cause this is due neither 1 g'lr.lemen is ready to state. It is the present opinion, however, that there is more or less magnetite in the clay of which the bricks are made. The mode of ! manufacturing is also thought to have J sonic thing to do with the phenomena. A« stated above,, the presence of lime served to decrease the magnetism, while the ab , allowed of greater power. The pro fessor thinks the importance of his dis i covery obvious. The slightest trace of un [ suspected magnetic power in the struct ; uial part of a laboratory is necessarily ■fatal to nicety of electrical measurements. That clay, when worked ever so little i by human agem-v. gathers magnetic prop- i j<it j. s has been thought for some time. i • j Eminent Italian scientists have made in- ! numerable experiments in that line dur ing the past half dozen years. Tneir ; greatest proof was found by experiment- I ing with several examples of ancient pot- i eery which had been buried for centuries. Crude as they were, magnetism Was found to exist in no uncertain Quantities. A TEXAS WONDER. Hall’s Great Discovery.
