Subscriptions will Grow Into Thous

Feel a Deep Interest.
Surely Rev. W. E. Mumford should fee!
encourage! by the i*tart made the past few
dayw in the taking of su baser! pt ion« for the
G»orgh.l 'lndustrial Home for the outcast
children of the state. Conference adjburn
ed in Hawkinsville on the 13th of Decem
ber. He retired from the conference to
devote his life to Che work of founding an
Inrustrial Home School and farm for the
maintenance, education and care of those
outcast children who are now unprovided
for by any charitable institution. His
movement at the start was handicapped by
the cry of hard times, as well as other 'pe
culiar circumstances ty'hich were 'thought
Io enpteially bo in his way. He
was laughed at and mocked by the .skepti
cal sod many were the predictions of fail
ure. it took a brave heart to face what
this man has had to face and nothing but
the supremest type of faith could lead him
to whore he was willing to give up posi
tion and salary to undertake what a major
ity of< hie brethren in the ministry thought
to b< ‘visionary. Os course, it would have
been Much easier for the man io work as
a Methodist preacher He could have had
a good salary and a comparatively
• asy time, bu't his heart was touched an 1
his feelings 'have been deeply stirred for
the downmost child. He has gone in to help
a class of children for whom there is abso
lutely ’no hope unless his movement or
eomething similar succeeds.
Mr. Mumford did not begin the work of
taking subscriptions until last Friday. He
has all along wanted the home located at
Macon. He feels very kindly toward the
■people of this city and he feels that this
home cannot 'be 'better located than near
here. So he has gone to work to try to
nalFe the money here to start the-the great
undertaking. He says:
If I can work on in Macon until enough
!<s raised to buy the land and build the |
initial house, which will accommodate |
fifty children, 1 will try and do 'this before I
going outside to the state. I would be
glad to have everything arranged to that
the doors of 'the home could be opened
by the first of IMarch. From what 1 know
of the need for this work. I am sure that j
should I publish tomorrow to the state
that the home was ready to admit chil- '
dren, that 'I could have fifty inmates inside
of thirty days.”
On Friday morning last the subscription
list started 'with a .$lO contribution from i
Professor 'Moseley of Mercer University, I
and Dr. Pollock immediately added a s.‘>o i
contribution. The scene was a tender one. !
The one who bad been praying and mov- j
in to a start was filled with deep) and ten- ;
der emotions when these two original am] '
entirely voluntary subscriptions came, and '
so came many of the amounts that follow. ?
Indeed nearly all have come spontaneous
ly and >Mr. Mumford tells us that he has
touched only a few peole in the few days j
he has been at work. The weather has been
Rf’.. the I resident and the parade came In 1
one day P nd t’KU he has? mixed up this ‘
with sending numerous circulars ,
and the spending of much time looking OUJ .
a prospective site for tile TstiUtion aml '
■fliPXtJ.hyj these subscriptions were se
' ’H’Ctl a hours’ canvass and 'here i
are the amounts so far obtained toward !
the founding of the greatest charity un- ;
dertaken in this state in twenty-five years.
Truly our friend is right 'when he calls this
