Scottsburg,* Dec. 24.-—A lynching took place here today and .the proceeding was so quiet that few rotfidents knew of th« occurrence until this morning. M. Tyler was the victim. Tyler had been in jail for several weeks as the result of an attempt on his part to kill his wife. Shortly after midnight the mob formed.- All were masked. They hurried to the sheriff’s res idence in the jail and railed hirn'by name and covering him and sons with guns, the leader demanded of him to turn over the keys to the jail. The demand was refused. The mob became eo threatening and de termined that the sheriff au<l family were frightened into telling where the keys -could be found. The mob took them, went *to the jail, where they secured the prison er and hanged him. November 3 Tyler wikot and seriously wounded the wife and ttHin made an 'ineffectual at sui 4ide.
