Be Careful No woman can be too careful of her condition during the period be fore her little ones are born. Neglect or improper treatment then endan gers her life and that of the child. It lies with her whether she shall suffer unnecessarily, or whether the ordeal shall be made comparatively easy. She had better do nothing than do something wrong. MOTHER’S FRIEND is the one and the only preparation that is safe to use. It is a liniment that penetrates from the outside. External applications . are eternally right. Internal medicines are radi cally wrong. They are more than humbugs—they endanger life. Mother’s Friend helps the muscles to relax and expand naturally—re lieves morning sickness—removes the cause of nervousness and head ache— prevents hard and rising breasts—shortens labor and lessens the pains—and helps the patient to rapid recovery. From a letter by a Shreveport, La., woman: “I hrtve been using your wonderful remedy. Mother’s Friend, for the last two months, and find it just as recommended.” Druggists sell it at $1 per bottle. New York, Dec. 27.—'A despatch to the • Herald from Paris says; Mme. Paulmir I has been acquited of the criminal charge 1 of having wounded ‘M. Oliver, secretarie , de Redaction of La Lanterne, but con demned to pay fifteen thousand francs i damages on the civil charges of material ; Injury sustained by M. Oliver. •Mme. Paulmir touched the audience very j deeply by her impassioned references to ’ h«r daughter, for whose sake she had ta- | ken the matter into her own hands when the abominable article appeared in La Lanterue reflecting on her honor. As for the author, Henri Turot, he took all re sponsibility for the consequences of his defamatory article upon himself and Said 1 he waa going to try to forget his remorse ’ by means of a long exploring voyage, j •Maitres eJan Neny. for Oliver; Lombard, a ! vocal general for 'the government, and Da- j net, for Mre. Paulmir, presented their ! causes in a measured way. all equally re- i proving M. Turot a» well as Mme. Paulmir. ! but at the same time finding a sort of moral excuse for the latter. The question was really one of -what amount of damages ought to be imposed as in France, the j woman is sure of acquittal under tuch cir cumstances as those. THEY ALL WENT OFF. Lot of Fire Works Suddenly Exploded on Mulb or rv Street. A lot of firewarks on a small t=tand in front of Birdsong’s saloon on Mulberry street, made the acquaintance of a spark from a small bay’s punk about 5 o’clock last evening and gave the people of that vicinity an impromptu exhibition of their prowess. For a few minutes the steady boom of the cannon crackers was deafen ing and the discharge or Reman candles made brilliant streaks of fire across the street. The grass on the street park was set on fire, and for a few minutes it was thought that it wotrld be necessary to call out the department in order to protect property, but the fire was extinguished be foie any damage was done. A CHANCE .FOR CADETS Dewev Needs Officers tolMan Captured Ships. By Associated Press.' New York, Dee. 27. —A special to the Herald from Washington say:s A cablegram has been received at the navy department from Rear Admiral Dewey asking for the immediate dispatch of officers sand men for service on three captured Spanish vessels which are to be refitted and added to his fleet. Owing to the mustering out of volunteer oflicers the department will find it rather difficult to comply with this request. Cap tain Crownishield, however, is doing all he can to provide the officers and men desired and arrangements are now being made to send a transport with them through the Suez canal. Department au thorities are anxious to commission the naval cadets who are now undergoing a course preliminary to final graduation. But this cannot be done unless congress passes the pending naval bill. There is a provision in this bill which expressly opens the way for the immediate assign ment of these cadets to duty as officers. Vr. The applications of th4 Roentgen rays, . espeidally in the domain of medicine and . surgery, are of constantly widening use- > fulness, although one hears less of them in the daily press now that the keen edge , of novelty has been blunted by a world’s 1 appreciation. Two fields of exploration i made possible by the fluorescence ot vacuum •tubes, and recently entered, are ‘ of noteworthy promise. One is the ex amination c f |ung tissue in the case of con sumption. The healthy lung gives com paratively little shadow in the sciagraph, i while the diseased tissue has a much dark er appearance in the picture. It is thus possible to ascertain exactly the part affect ed and to attempt palliative or remedial ► eatiuent accordingly. The other recent use of the Roentgen 'ay of especial value is in observing the movements of the stomach and its contents ; in the preliminary digestive process. By mixing subnitrate cf bismuth, which is said to I’e a harmless powder, with the food, the movements of the stomach may be ! seen by means cf the fluoroscope under suitable conditions. Thu knowledge thus gained is of great importance to the physi ologist and the yhysi -ian. as many facts hitherto unknown are revealed. It is not strange that au English writer playfully remarked that the X ray may yet he employed to r< ad the riddle of the sphinx. It is certain that Professor Rpant gun uave to the world a discovery which is bringing to mortal gaae -cany of the deep mysteries of nature. —Western Electrician MACON NEWS TUCCE-A" EVENING. DECEMBER 37 1898. H • Got the Shoes. An interesting incident occurred on our streets on • day recently. The pastor of one of our churches and three other men I were standing on the warm side of . Wal-h’s store builuing talking. The pas tor bantered one of them to trade shoes, but he <t.e< lined, saying, “Yours have | boles in them.” Another said: “lYell, it’s too bad that a I preacher in our town has to go around with su< h s’x,r,s. We ought to take up a I collection for him.” The preacher, suiting the action to the word, passed his hat, and one threw in a penny, and a third threw in a dollar, say ing, “Now. cover that.” The hat went around again and again, with a little twitting on each side, with a dollar here and a half dollar there, and one man threw in a $5 bilk saying. “Now, cover . that.” It was enough. The bat contained $12.50 The preacher at ter ward offered to I refund, hut there were no takers. He now wears the best pnir of shoes he could find in town. —Summerfield (Kan.) Sun. Dri»*»>»ailat»*n In France. The returns of the census for France which was taken in March, 1897. have i now been published and compared with j the statistics of the previous census, which ■ was taken six years before. A year ago i the number of people in France was 38,- 1 228,909, and at the 1891 census it was 38,- ‘ 095,150, go that Jn six years the popula i lion of France had only increased by 133,- , 819 persons And even this trifling increase is more apparent than real, for it has taken place entirely in the large towns and is due to i tho influx of foreigners, such as Belgians | and Italians, who are to be found in in creasing numbers among the urban pop ulations of France. In only 24 depart ments is there any increase, in 63 depart ments there is a positive falling off, and ; tjjis is more especially marked in the ru ral communes Christ la ns In Daninsetis. As Kaiser Wilhelm rode through the streets of Dau ascus recently it may not | have occurred to him that it is only 66 years since that privilege was first accord ed to,a Christian. It was only in 1232, when the city was taken by the Egyptians ‘ under Iltfahim Pasha, that a foreign eon ' sub was permitted to enter. The British consul entered it mounted and in full cos tume, with an escort of Egyptian soldiers. It may also not be entirely reassuring to his mind that as recently as 1860 the great massacre of the Christian popula tion took place. The Moslems, taking advantage of the disturbances in the Leb anon, rose against the Christians, burned their whole quarter, and massacred in cold blood 3,000 males. Thousands who escaped perished from wounds, famine or i privation —London Chronicle. i A Bullet Proof Heart. The Baltimore Sun says that the late William B. Smallbridge of Glenville, W. Va., a veteran of the civil war, carried a bullet in his heart for 37 years. His death : was not due to the presence of th& bullet, j and, in fact, he never suffered any incon ’ venience from it. Before his death he asked his physician, in the interest of science, to make an autopsy in order to find the bullet. The physician did so and I found it imbedded in the heart. Unless he manages to strike the knock-out blow, it means that death will come up in the second round in the guise of some serious malady. When a man's stomach is weak and his digestion is impaired, the life-giving elements of the food he takes are not assimilated into the blood. The blood gets thin and weak, and the body slowly starves. In the meantime the disordered liver and the sluggish bow els have forced into the blood all manner of impurities. The body is hungry and eagerly consumes anything that the blood j stream carries to it. In place of healthy ■ nutriment, it receives for food foul poisons that should have been excreted by the bowels. Continued, this system starva tion combined with poisoning, will wreck every organ in the body. Naturally, the weakest organ will give way first. If a man is naturally nervous, he will break down with nervous exhaustion, or prostra tion. If he inherits weak lungs, the con sequence will be consumption, bronchitis, asthma, or some disease of the air-passages.
