Chicago. Dee. 29. —Abraham Lincoln in bas-relief on a table of bronze may adorn the turret of the battleship Illinois. For mer Congressman George Adams has writ ten to Governor Tanner asking him to re commend 4o the legislature an approprla „ lion for a memorial tablet of that design. Beside the figure of the martyr president Mr. Adams suggests that an Inscription be placed below with the extracts from Lincoln’s Gettysburg speech. Many of the states have appropriated money for services or adornments of a memorial nature for the battleships that bear their names. lowa and Indiana fur nished silver services for the ttoatinc forts that bear their names and the legislature of Massachusetts has appropriated money for a bronze tablet for the battleship of that name. Mr. Adams has written a let ter to the Massachusetts executive asking for a description of the tablet. He thinks that as the citizens of Illinois are to contribute a silver service for the ■oattieship, of the commonwealth should furnish something in the nature of a pop ular memorial. The tablet would be placed oir the forward turret under the guns in a place where it would be as prominent as the figure head on the prow. A FRIGHTFUL BLUNDER. A SMALL PISTOL But It Was Able to Kill a Very Careless Man. By Associated Chicago. Dec. 29. —Edward Kelly, a well ■saloon 'man of this city, has accidentally shot and killed himself. The tragedy, which occurred in his saloon, was the re sult ot a joke and was witnessed by sev eral of Kelly's friends. James S. Savage, manager of the Grove land department 'building remarked that he was going to an apartment building to collect a bill. “You’ll need a gun to defend yourself.” laughed Kelly. “Well. I’m ready for an emergency,” re plied Savage, as he pulled a revolver and laid it on the bar. Kelly picked it up and looked a; it. Savage warned him that it was loaded. "Why, that would not hurt a baby.” said th? saloon keeper, as he threw the re volver on the floor behind the counter. The next instant there was a loud report and eKHy fell forward to the floor. “The gun fooled me." he cried, as he fell and he became upoonscious. His startled companions hurried to his side and found that the bullet had entered the left eye. A doctor was called but Kelly died within a few minutes without regaining con sciousness. The body was laid away in Its temporary resting place in Laurel Hill cemetery, but will be taken up and re moved to Cuba as soon as the family can | make the necessary arrangements. SMALL ROASTS CHAPLAINS. Says Men Would Rather Go to Cock Fights Than to Meeting. Savannah, Ga., Dec. 29 —Rev. Sam Small, the evangelist, is now chaplain of the Third Engineers, United States army. He arrived here yesterday and one of the first things he did was to give out an inter view. Among other things, he said: “The chaplains are a sort of sop to the church sentiment, without much substance to them. They just take a minister add put a uniform on him with a silver cross on the shoulder, pay him S2OO a month and turn him loose on 1,200 men, without any of the implements of the spiritual war fare to fight with. I’ve been disappoint ed. ‘‘When I get out I am going to suggest that they do away with the chaplains. I suppose there may be a howl, but it is bet- | ter to raise the issue and have the whole I system revised. When we get down to \ Cuba I’ll wager most of the men would rather go to a cock fight or a bull ■ than attend services. To tell the truth, 1 am beginning to think there is a heap of balderdash about what the chaplains do I accomplish outside of meeting the senti- I ment that calls for their presence with every body of troops.” C 21 S T OH T 21 . Atlanta, Ga. TWO POINTED QUESTIONS ANSWER ED. What is the use of making a better ar ticle than your competitor if you cannot get a better price for it? Ans. As there is no difference in the price the public will buy only the better, so that while our profits may be smaller on a single sale they will be much larger i in the aggregate. How can you get the public to know that your make is the best? If both articles are brought prominently ■ before the public both are certain to be tried and the public will very quickly pass judgment upon them and use only the better one. This explains the large sale on Cham berlain’s Cough Remedy. The people have been using it for years and have found that it can always be depended upon They may occasionally take up with some fash ionable novelty put forth with exaggerated claims, but are certain to return to the one remedy that they know to be reliable. And for coughs, colds and croup there is nothing equal to Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy. For sale by H. J. Lamar w , Sons. MACON NEWS THURSDAY EVENIWO, DECEMBER 29 1898. IGEN. Richards and Seymour Bros., of New York . last night made a proposition to the city coun cil to buy the city ground rent lots for $250,000. These are lots upon which the owners pay the city an annual ground rent, the asset being valued at $213,000 on a basis of 7 per cent. There has been much talk of selling the city asset in view of the fact that Savannah’s treasury is quite short of money and has no funds on hand with which to pay for the construc tion of the new sewerage system. The city has recently borrowed $20,000 for current expenses and will probably have to borrow more if the present council desires to turn rhe government over clear of debt. Coun cil has taken the matter under most seri ous advisement. An opinion has been ren dered to the effect that rhe city can legally part with this large property. "’SPAIN’S GREATEST NEED. Mr. R. ip.
