FEBRUARY 16, 1889. MORE CORRUPTION. The people of Georgia have not re covered from the shock ePpcrionced, by tQe exposure of the corruption of Bullock, as exhibited in tho oorres. pondenoo between himself and the State Treasurer, and in tho report of the Committee on Retrenchment, when tlioy are called upon to receive further evidence of the dishonesty of the crca- .tore who haa been put to rule over them, and the complicity of tho subor dinates whom he has gatherd about him. The report from Treasurer An gler in relation to llio payment ol the publio funds upon -warrants authori zed by law, whieh we teproduce else where, as it appears in tho Atlanta Constitution, opens a now chapter in the series of frauds whieh havffocen purpetratod upon the tax payers.— This report is very plain and pointed in its statement of facts. Bullock or dered a claim to ho paid whieh had been refuted by Governor Jenkins and tho Legislature. .Upon the dec larations of his two private and confi dential Secretaries, that the claim had not been before presented, it was paid and tho Secretaries pocketed one half Of the proceeds. There the matter ■lands, .as prominent a piece of fraud and corruption as tho history of Rad icalism affords. We have a little to add that may strengthen the case. One oi these small pox claims was tried in the Su, A Scalawag vpon Cautet-iiagghbb —Ilmmloutt, tho head scalawag of Virginia, pays bis respots to the army of carpet-baggers aa follows: “A fow strangers are squatted in Virginia for the whole and sole pur pose of making their living and for tunes by ofllee.Jiolding. These men, without means, without any establish ed characters to reoontmend them to the confidence of the people, without any omploymennt or bneines* to help build up the Statu in any way! loaf ing around; prying into everybody's husiuoss, having nono of their own; looking out for any vacancy of office which mny be made; trying to shove others out that they themselves may creep in; trying to pnli other* down that they may gn cp; trying to snatoli the bread out of honest men’s mouths tlmtthoy msy fill their own greedy slomaohs, trying to undermino hon est men’s business tbit they may sneak into their plaees; trying tc crush out trutli and nonesty to make wny lor lying and robbery.” 85 Per Annum NO. 14. LAW CARDS. K U U'AIIHIIS obeyed, and the Suprjrne Court dcui. ded that the judgment was not war-1 BANKRUPTCY. ». These aro matters of ranted by law record, and sliould have been known to Bullock and his subordinates. The Ex-Provisional Governor pressed hie cluiin and Bullock was found agreea ble to lie liquidation. But there was an obstruction in the way. One Madisoii Bell, tho Comptroller Gene ral of tho State, it seems, has not yet arrived at that point in Radicalism whero moral obligations aro forgotten, and common honesty despised. He refused tQ countersign the warrnt, al- legging as a reason that he‘ suspected rascality, when it was first presented." Subsequently he was fortified in bis decision by the opinion of tho Supreme Court, and when his refusal was com municated to the Ex-Provisional Gov ernor, who • in person pressed witli treat importunity his little olaim, it s said that the latter indulged in ob- negations and expletive towards the lonest official, not suitable for polite ears, or becoming a professor of the Oaivlnistio creed. Wo do not caro to pureue the mat. ter iurthcr, but we haxard the asser tion, with n full knowledge of the foroo and import ot oar words, that ii the Legislature will appoint a Committee that will fearlessly disoharge its duty, irrespective ot the question of remove ing tno Capitol or any other embar rassing collateral issue, a mass of cor ruption and extravaganoe can bo brought to light os will stir into notion the apathetic and indifferent Repre sentatives of the people.—Columbus Sun. In view of this fact, wlmtis the condition ofthe trade in the hog product ol tho West at this time. The south is oonaaming meatot the now crop, while the eld stock was consumed long before the new could he got forward. This it unusual for the season, and is of gTeat importance. In tno face of this fact, we have the evidence that there is at least an even clianoo tor a small crop of hogs to give us the moat for the coming wants.— Could wo comonp to; lui year's oiop, we should then bo deficient, for that only met tiio neoeasilies, which wero cramped by tho laok of mesns to pay.
